PRE-VIZ: A Powerful Tool for Director/DoPStoryboards serve only as a visual reference tool to plan the technical aspects of conveying your vision to the screen, whereas pre-viz is a powerful directors tool,now available in India.

I have now evolved from storyboarding to a much more practical and accurateform of film story-telling called Pre-viz.

Pre-viz does the job of storyboards and multiplies it tenfold to include aspects of every minute technical resource that goes into planning a shot and putting it tofilm. It is the closest you can come to actually seeing the final result of a shot in3D without spending the huge amount of resources and saving valuable time.

In fact, with Pre-viz, planning the resources you will use one hundred percentbecomes a very easy task. Thus giving film-makers more control over image.

Did you imagine a particular image which was vital to your film but couldn’t get itright while shooting and you couldn’t figure it how to get it right? Well, pre-viz isthe solution to many such situations.

The most practical features include:

- Camera Features: I can now show you how the shot will look as seen through any make andmodel of camera like Arri, Red One, Panavision, lenses, aspect ratio, groundglass. This gives you options without even renting a camera. You can also testthe shots with different aperture and depth-of-field. The camera movements liketilt, pan , dolly, crane,and jib can be animated thus making it real.

- Production Design: If you can think of any set, prop, outdoor location or space, I can quickly puttogether the entire set with extras, props, vehicles and actors that will help youplan the exact dimensions of the set to be built and resources needed. The best



part is, you can build as many sets and break them down without having spent asingle dime. Then pick the one for your final film.

Extras and Backgrounds

Any background that you wish to imagine on any scale can now be generatedwith Pre-viz and quickly switched to newer ones to see what works. Add to thisthe fact that you can populate the frame with countless extras that you havevisualized for that scene about battles, riots, or rallies and you can pin-point thecorrect equipment to convey this massive scale. This without actually arriving onset and trying to figure out how to manipulate hundreds, if not, thousands of people. Pre-viz again enables you to see exactly what a scene along the lines of an epic populated film will look like.

- Lighting and Grip: Dolly moves, pans tilts, steadicam, aerial footage…Are now easy to pull off andPre-viz allows me to show you where the lights (Most makes models andvoltages) can be placed for dramatic effect and what the camera move willactually look like. On the day of the shoot you will know in advance becausePre-viz made it easy to picture. You can test the shots with different cranes,dollies, arms and camera vehicle.

Stunt Co-ordination: I consider eliminating human error that could cost lives as an integral part of stunt work, more than what the final stunt will look on the big screen. With Pre-viz and the accurate calculations it generates for the shooting spacedimensions, you can work out the optimum placement of moving vehicles,explosions, character movement, and trajectory of the projectiles and final endposition of the stunt. You can now envision this in your office with the entirestunt team and work out all kinks without having spent a huge amount and not

having risked a single life multiple times.Multiple Camera Set-ups: Traditional storyboards have a once only tendency. For subsequent cameraangles of the same shot newer storyboards have to be created and hence thereis a percentage of frame information that is different for each new storyboard.Pre-viz enables you to have elaborate multiple camera angles of the same
