Pulse of the
Profession® is the PMI
annual global survey
of project, program

managers charting the
major trends in project
management and business approaches.
2018 SURVEYIn this world of constant disruptions, having new ideas and envisioning a strategy is essential to every
organization. However, real value and benefits will only be delivered if businesses are able to take
ideas from paper and translate them into reality.
An idea will only ever remain an idea without project management to bring the idea to fruition.
Success starts with the right approach to support project delivery.
Organizations will continue to use more than one project management
approach and combine different techniques to cope with their own distinct
challenges. We see from the 2018 findings that regardless of the approach
that is used—predictive, agile, or hybrid—organizations that use some type
of formal project management approach are successfully meeting their
goals, within budget and on time.
In fact, according to our Job Growth and Talent Gap report, by 2027, employers will need 87.7 million
individuals working in project management–oriented roles, increasing the need for skilled and
experienced project and program managers. Organizations will continue to place a greater focus on
project management performance improvement to stay competitive and relevant.
The PMO directors and executive leaders we interviewed reinforced what we have seen in the
research that the role of the project manager is expanding to Strategic Advisor, Innovator,
Communicator, Big Thinker, Versatile Manager.
Project professionals prefer to acquire those skills in faster, more flexible, and easier-to-learn project
management methodologies and approaches.
The dynamic, rapidly changing, complex business environment continues to
emphasize the need for excellence in project, program, and portfolio
management. We see that more than half of champions feel digital
transformation will have a major impact on work.
Just over one in four respondents mentioned the ability to learn, understand,
apply, and keep up with technology as the most-needed skill for project
managers to respond to the impacts of the digital transformation. Other skills
include communication (22%); leadership and management skills (18%); and
change management, adaptability, and flexibility (12%). As a result,
organizations wi

The global economy has become more project-oriented, as the practice of projectmanagement expands within industries that were traditionally less project-oriented, suchas health care, publishing and professional services.

Whether directly or indirectly, projects can—and do—change our world every day.
What are we seeing?• A dramatic increase in the number of jobs requiring project-oriented skills.• Attrition rates, including professionals retiring from the workforce.• A significant uptick in demand for project talent, especially in rapidly developing economies
such as China and India.
• A comprehensive, philosophical, humanistic approach

Why and does the PMBOK® Guide change? The profession of project management is constantly evolving based on recent theories, ideas, ideologies and philosophies, it becomes necessary to update the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge as well.
What change occurred? The 6th edition of the PMBOK® Guide released in September 2017, includes some significant changes to reflect the current industry trends.
Main Changes:• Agile Practice Guide - These changes are based on PMI's research on the growing influence and application of
Agile, Scrum, Kanban, Lean, XP, and similar adaptive and change-driven project management methodologies• New section on defining the ever-expanding role of the PM. This section now also addresses PMI's Talent Triangle
encompassing the leadership, strategic, and technical project management skills and competencies that drive the modern project manager role.
