President Aquino inaugurates MICT’s Berth 6

Philippine President Benigno Aquino III recently inaugurated the sixth berth (Berth 6) of the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s (ICTSI) flagship terminal and the Philippines’ largest and leading international trading gateway.

An investment amounting to USD200 million, Berth 6 further boosts operations

Philippine President Benigno Aquino III (far right) pours champagne on a marker to inaugurate Berth 6 of the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s (ICTSI) flagship terminal and the Philippines’ largest and leading international trading gateway. and services with an increased terminal capacity, from the 1.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) to 2.5 million TEUs. The MICT, the sole-dedicated container handling facility in the country, currently holds 65 percent of the containerized cargo market in the Port of Manila.

“Today, we proudly open for business MICT’s sixth berth expansion after two years of construction and development. We are doubly proud and honored that President Aquino has taken the time to be with us on this special occasion,” said Enrique K. Razon Jr., ICTSI Chairman and President.

“This new berth has been completed at the most opportune time. With the country attracting more foreign investment than ever, we now have added capacity to

quickly and efficiently move cargo. Berth 6 will enable the seamless facilitation of the Philippines’ growing global trade in the next few years,” he added.

Berth 6 is ICTSI’s response to the growing volumes at the MICT. The expansion is also part of the concession agreement between ICTSI and port regulator Philippine Ports Authority when the former won the 25+25 year concession to operate, manage and develop the MICT in 1987. A first in the Philippines, the MICT was privatized during the administration of former President Corazon C. Aquino, and is recognized as one of the most successful port privatizations in the world.

The new facility adds to the existing terminal 300 meters of berth and 12 hectares of container storage space. The new berth is equipped with two post-Panamax twin lift quay cranes and 10 rubber tired gantries. Another quay crane is on order, and will be delivered early next year.

With Berth 6, MICT now has an available quay line of 1,600 meters, which can accommodate five to seven container vessels at one time including the largest ships deployed in global trade lanes. The MICT’s container handling equipment fleet is the largest and the most sophisticated in the country to date with 12 quay cranes and 45 rubber tired gantries deployed.

When the need arises, MICT’s available berthing facilities could be extended by a further 300 meters more, and dredged deeper from the existing controlling depth of 13 meters to 14.5 meters. The MICT is flexibly designed to adjust to terminal expansion and could be extended to an additional seventh berth to facilitate increasing volumes in the Port of Manila. Total terminal area is 75.4 hectares.

“The MICT as ICTSI’s flagship operation is our benchmark terminal for operating ports around the world, a true

symbol of Filipino ability and distinction. Through this new development, the MICT continues to be a beacon of Philippine pride and prominence in a truly global industry,” said Christian R. Gonzalez, ICTSI Vice President and MICT General Manager and Acting Asia Region Head.

“The success of ICTSI as a global port operator would have not been possible without the MICT. It was our terminal here, which allowed us to bring ICTSI’s brand of port management and expertise to the rest of the world,” he added.

Aside from President Aquino, present during the inauguration were Alfredo Lim, Manila Mayor; Manuel Roxas II, Philippine Department of Transportation and Communications Secretary; and Juan Sta. Ana, Philippine Ports Authority General Manager.

BCT hosts open sea swim contest

For the second year in a row, Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) is hosting the Gdynia Marathon, the most extreme swimming competition in open sea in Europe from 24 to 26 August in the Bay of Gdnsk.

The world’s top swimmers and champions were invited to take part in this marathon wherein participants will swim an 18 kilometer-long free style route starting from the Hel Peninsula, ending up on a city beach in Gdynia.

Petar Stoychev, winner of eleven open water swimming championships; Benjamin Konschack of Germany, 2011 Champion of the 25-kilometer race; Pilar Geijo of Argentina, 2011 World Open Water Swimming Woman of the Year; Trent Grimsey of Australia, Winner of the prestigious King and Queen of the Sea Race in Rio de Janeiro in 2011, and Vice-Champion of the 25-kilometer race in 2009; Natalia Charlos, European Open Water Swimming Cup Champion; and Krzysxtof Pielowski, the 2011 Gdynia Marathon Champion, have been invited.

Mr. Grimsey says: “I will participate in the BCT Gdynia Marathon for the first time. The waters are demanding, and I will compete with the world’s best. The race promises to be interesting despite a relatively small number of swimmers. I do hope the event will become a regular part of the global swimming events calendar.”

Prizes for this year amount to USD 28,000.The safety level during the marathon will comply with the highest international standards, with each contestant to be secured by one boat

each with a lifeguard, a referee, and a coach. ”In 2011, we held a 3.5 km long pilot-race that tested our abilities and skills as the organizer of the marathon. We learned a lot, and we

are ready to hold a secure, safe marathon for the full distance of 10 nautical miles. The race recalls the tradition of competitions taking place in the 1960’s and early 1970’s right in the waters of the Bay of Gdansk. Our wish is to give this wonderful day back to Gdynia every year, when the entire Poland can witness a spectacular, sportive rivalry of swimmers crossing the Baltic Sea from the Hel Peninsula to our city,” said Krzysztof Szymborski, BCT President.

A total of 45 students of the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) Alternative Learning System (ALS) in F. Bangoy Central Elementary School (FBCES) in Baranggay (Village) Sasa, Davao City passed the ALS National Test. DepEd established ALS to benefit Filipinos who cannot attend formal schooling.

Among the elementary passers who can now enroll in high school is Nimfa Galo, a 20-year old house helper.

Ms. Galo stopped schooling at grade 4 when she had to help her mother take care of her younger siblings. Upon the prodding of her employer, she enrolled in the ALS program held at the FBCES in June 2011. When she took the equivalency test last 13 May, she was among the top passers, and was even accelerated to the secondary level.

Another passer is 27-year old Robert Torreon. Mr. Torreon was in third year high school when he was forced to stop his studies to work for his family. Like Ms. Galo, it was also his employer, a PG dealer, who encouraged him to take up ALS. He now plans to take up welding at the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.

ALS is a free education program under the Bureau of Alternative Learning System. In ALS, students have to spend 10 months in school or 800 hours in the classroom. Their performances are assessed afterwards. Since ALS is a module-based learning system, students come in on a set time, and choose a module to read. A quiz is given after each module to test their learning. Instead of teachers, facilitators are always present to answer any questions. Lecturers would sometimes discuss a certain module. After several months, the students take the Accreditation and Equivalency Test. If they pass the test, they will be given diplomas and will be entitled to pursue further studies. ICTSI Foundation, Inc. started supporting ALS in 2010.

Madagascar International Container Terminal Services Ltd. (MICTSL) was a major sponsor of the recently concluded Transaid Madagascar Cycle Challenge.

The Transaid Cycling Challenge involved approximately 30 logistics and freight industry specialists cycling across Madagascar over a distance of 480 kilometers.

As a main sponsor, MICTSL delivered funding to Transaid for the latter’s activities in Madagascar and elsewhere as well as funding directed at specifically assisting the challenge participants on their ride, parts of which were off-road.

Transaid is an international UK development charity that delivers specialized logistic solutions in Africa including Madagascar. It aims to reduce poverty and improve livelihoods across Africa and the developing world through creating better transport solutions. The organization was founded by Save the Children and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and the Patron is HRH The Princess Royal.

Transaid’s core charitable works comprise road safety, professional driver training, access to health care, and access to livelihoods.

The charity’s works are widely acknowledged to play a major part in both saving and improving the lives of numerous people wherever it is active. MICTSL is pleased and proud to support Transaid’s diverse works, and to join with it in improving the condition of the lives of the underprivileged people in Madagascar.

MICTSL operates the container terminal concession in the port of Toamasina, Madagascar’s principal port gateway. MICTSL has, since being awarded the concession in 2005, invested over USD60 million in the Toamasina container terminal, creating a modern container terminal platform widely acknowledged to operate in accordance with best practices worldwide.

(ICTSI Oregon) recently sponsored the 5th Annual Luau Dinner and Dance Fundraiser to support the Aguman Capampangan in Portland, Oregon for its medical and dental mission in the Province of Pampanga in the Philippines. For 16 years, Aguman Capampangan has sponsored over eight medical and dental missions, which treated over 25,000 people in Pampanga. Last year, they were able to provide medical and dental services to 14 towns over a two-week period. They were also able to give relief goods such as rice and canned foods to the needy in Masantol and Macabebe.
