Good News

Possible Donor for Kehoe Center’s DAS: The Foundation has found a potential donor

to put a cell phone distributed antenna system on the ground floor of the Kehoe Center.

President’s College Update

5

Kehoe Center Network Issues: Kehoe Center experienced intermittent network issues

that disrupted internet access. The network issues were remediated when the distribution

network switches were connected to the new single-mode fiber backbone in the building.

Phase II of IT Project: Bid packages were received from different IT vendors. The

review committee has met and reviewed the quotes for IT network equipment. Two

vendors have been chosen to supply the network equipment for the College.

Accomplishments

Upgraded Classrooms: Classrooms KH-135, KH-220 and KH-222 located in the Kehoe

Center have new HD short throw projectors installed.

Kehoe Center Network Core Configuration: Members of IT worked on the weekend to

upgrade the configuration of Kehoe Center’s network core located on the fourth floor.

The reason for the upgrade was to define a more coherent star topology for the network.

Goals

Air Conditioning for Kehoe Center MDF: The IT department is working with facilities

to get a separate air conditioning unit for the fourth floor MDF (main data facility)

located at the Kehoe Center. Presently during the winter months the door to the MDF

room has to remain open because of the heat produced from network equipment.

Cell Phone DAS for the Kehoe Center: The IT department is working with the

administration in hopes to get funding to install a cell phone DAS (Distributed Antenna

System) on the bottom floor of the Kehoe Center.

Financial Aid Office

Good News

We expect to begin processing aid for the 2018-2019 academic year within the next

couple of weeks. The feds began processing ’18-’19 FAFSA’s at the beginning of this

month.

Over 80 spring semester scholarships funded by the NC State Foundation have just been

awarded. The recipients have been mailed offer letters and acceptance forms.

Accomplishments

Amanda has updated settings in Colleague needed to process aid for ’18-’19. We still

need to have one more piece of Ellucian software installed to be able to award ’18-’19

aid.

Amanda and Caroline sent letters to students who will be new to the College in spring.

The letters explain what steps each student must complete to be awarded aid.

Federal regulations dictate that colleges receiving federal student aid be audited each

year. Auditors were on campus last week; much material relating to the awarding of aid

was presented to them.

Goals

The second half of fall semester’s student loans will come to the college next week.

The college will soon complete another round of dropping students for non-participation.

This will require us to recalculate aid eligibility for a number of students.

Jim will conduct a financial aid information session at Buckeye Central High School next

week.

The Curriculum Committee meets on 10/20/17. We will be discussing the creation of a new

course (MATH-0060) and will continue discussion of a syllabus supplement.

Attended WebEx meeting regarding the statewide Credit When Its Due Program on

10/17/18. Temporary changes were made to the process of distributing potential degree

eligible student lists to 4 year institutions. For this fall, while some logistical issues are being

worked out with the Student Clearinghouse, the ODHE will distribute the lists to the 4 year

institutions. The 4 year institutions will contact students to notify them that they may be

eligible for obtaining an associate degree. The 4 year institution will send transcripts to the

appropriate 2 year college for evaluation of credits and the applicability to a 2 year degree. If

requirements are met, the 2 year institution will award the associate degree to the student and

also notify the 4 year institution.

Accomplishments

The registrar submitted institutional I-17 updates to SEVIS. Once the updates are approved,

we will print, sign and submit our I-17 form for recertification.

Fall mid-term were posted and students with less than C grades were notified by mail. Those

students were encouraged to contact their advisors and/or faculty member for assistance. 595

F 279

Administrative withdrawals were also processed at the same time as mid-term grades.

Students were issued WNP (Withdrawn due to Non Participation) grades and they were

notified by mail. 92 students received at least one WNP grade. 154 WNP grades were issued.

Goals

Priority registration begins on November 1st. The registrar will be meeting with IT on

10/25/17 to assign online registration dates for current students.

Good News

Faculty who have logged sessions into Advisor Trac have increased from Year 2 to Year

3! Kudos and more to all the faculty who have been using this tool to record sessions with

their students!

Although the number of students seen has declined just a bit (from 749 in Year 2 to 674 in

Year 3), the number of logged sessions nearly doubled – from 575 in Year 2 to 1099 in Year

3. (Based on academic year). Faculty inputting notes provides a great history for the staff

and advisors to use when also meeting with the student, so the student doesn’t need to retell

their story each advising session. It’s a win-win all around!

The grant paid for 4 people to attend the AtD conference in New Orleans, on changing the

advising system. Tom P., Cathy C., Tara Hines, and Monica Durham were in attendance.

The 3 liaisons attended the NACADA conference in St. Louis.

Accomplishments

Bev finalized two documents with Reid Caryer in the AG office. They were advising

policies. One on procedural documentation of notes was suggested to be rescinded from the

manual and put instead into some other format for distribution. He did not feel it was needed.

in the policy manual. The policy was edited and resubmitted to President’s Staff for approval.

This information was also shared with the Success Team/Steering Committee.

Liaisons attended FYEX classes, talking to students in their division, teaching them how to

read the curriculum sheets, discussing careers, answering questions, etc.

Goals

Bev will be debriefing attendees to the conferences (for reporting purposes) on what they

learned at their conferences and how the information will be used or shared at the College.

Continue running reports on the number of active advisees per advisor, number of student

contacts per advisor, numberof mediated course drops, number of STAR notices, and others

for the formative evaluation and annual report.

Urban Center and Outreach

Good News

After multiple presentations to Mansfield Middle School staff, we have 112 student referrals

for the Graduate Pathways to Success program.

These students will take the Accuplacer and go through an interview process that includes

their parents.

On Tuesday October 24th, Carter partners with middle school principal Rob McQuate to

present the opportunity to over 200 eighth graders to ensure all have an opportunity to

express interest in this wonderful opportunity.

These presentations will be followed up on the same day with an information session for all

eighth grade parents.

In addition, Cheryl is continuing to present the NC State story to current juniors and seniors

one on one settings as well as in class settings.

Carter continues to meet periodically with parents to help them understand their student’s

options for college and federal aid options.

She is currently working with the Career Tech Director to visit all career tech classes to

present the NC State opportunity for earning college credit as a result of our articulation

agreements.

Being located in the high school has given us the ability to develop better relationships with

teachers who in turn are beginning more and more to refer kids to Cheryl to explore NC State

as an option.

Seeing Ms. Carter walk the halls each day is encouraging more and more students to interact

with her and eventually talk about their futures and the necessity of advanced education and

training. This dynamic is at the very heart of the administration ‘s vision for impacting our

city.

The Urban Center will not be participating in this year’s downtown Trick or Treat event that
