President’s Message Spring 2014 Greetings to each of you! As I write this article today, the sun is actually shining! It is a welcome sight in this part of the state. We have had a long snowy winter. I am so very excited about the next few months and what they hold for our Extension family! What an honor to be a part of an organization that is turning 100! As you well know, the Smith Lever Act that actually established the Cooperative Extension Service in the U. S. will be celebrating it’s Centennial. The celebrations will take place nationally on Thursday, May 8th, 2014. In February, leaders from each of the KY Associations traveled to Memphis, TN for the JCEP Conference. Past President Lyndall Harned & I represented the Alpha Kappa Chapter of ESP at this meeting. State ESP chapters in attendance discussed the following: creative ideas for membership drives, recruitment & retention, engaging life members, and new & innovative strategies. We will be discussing some of the ideas generated at our upcoming spring board meeting. Also in February, our Annual State Meeting was held at the Hyatt Regency in Lexington, KY before the State Extension Conference. Special thanks to Dr. Henning for allowing our associations and others to hold their meeting at this time. It was a great meeting, and is always wonderful to see people from across the state and especially our lifetime members. KY's leadership team representing all state associations and Extension Administration will be traveling to Washington, DC on April 6th9th to attend the PILD Conference. As you are aware, this is an opportunity for those attending to meet with their U. S. Representatives and U. S. Senators from their home districts. I am excited about attending this conference for the first time. Lyndall as past president will also be attending representing ESP. Several ESP deadlines are approaching on April 1st including the Southern VP position applications. We would be honored for an Alpha Kappa member to represent us in this position. Also, if you would like serve on a national committee, those applications are due on April 1st as well. Kentucky currently has 5 members serving on national committeesGae Broadwater on the Professional Development Committee; Lora Lee Howard on the Marketing Committee; Jennifer Hunter on the Marketing Committee; Joan Martin on the Global Relations Committee; and Louise Moore on the Resource Development & Management Committee. Special thanks to these members for their outstanding leadership! Save the date for the ESP Spring Board Meeting, which will be held on Wednesday, April 30th at the Nelson County Extension Service Office beginning at 10:30 a.m. We will also try to offer this meeting by Lync as well. We would love to see you at the ESP National Meeting in Indianapolis, IN on October 6th9th. It sounds as though they have a wonderful program planned for us. ESP has an excellent theme for the year "Growing the Extension Professional for the Next 100 Years". What a powerful statement! Lastly, I wanted to thank Lyndall for his outstanding leadership to the Alpha Kappa Chapter and for being a great mentor to me! Thanks again Lyndall for your service! Thanks to each of you for allowing me to represent you as the Alpha Kappa Chapter President! I will try my very best to lead our organization forward as we start the next 100 Years of the Smith Lever Act! Natasha Lucas, Alpha Kappa Chapter President General Headquarters N-106 Ag.
