Protecting yourself from infectious diseases

• Your body uses your skin and chemicals to fight diseases. Your body has specialized defenses, such as an immune system and an inflammatory response these protect your body from pathogens

What you can do to stay well?

• Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day

• Exercise regularly get at least 60 minutes of activity daily

• Get regular medical checkups seeing your doctor can prevent you from getting sick

• Avoid contact with sick people when you are exposed to people that are sick wash your hands

• Get enough sleep it is important to keep your body functioning properly

Why diseases affect everybody?

• There are so many pathogens in so many places that it is impossible to avoid them

Common bacterial diseases

Tetanus : Symptoms: severe muscle spasms Transmission: enters body through cuts or wounds Strep Throat: Symptoms: sore throat, and yellow or white specks on tonsils Transmission: spread by contact with mucus from an infected person

Viral Diseases

Flu: Symptoms: headache, sore throat, fever, vomiting, fatigue, and cough Transmission: spread by contact with saliva or mucus of infected person Mumps: Symptoms: pain and swelling of glands in the throat, fever, and headache Transmission: spread by contact with infected airborne droplets
