FROM THE PRINCIPAL Phil Fitzsimons
Welcome to the 2011 school year, the 98th year of existence as Murray Bridge High School. I trust all students and their families had a pleasant summer holiday break. I would like to give a warm welcome to our Year 8 students and their families to Murray Bridge High School and also welcome the new staff members joining us this year. Coming back to school this year sees a number of key building improvements well underway and a number of new changes in structures.
Front Office and Student Services Office We welcome Miss Jannelle Angus our new front office receptionist. The front office is currently being upgraded to best represent the school to the community of Murray Bridge and beyond. One of the key changes will see student traffic move to the Student Services Office where students are expected to go for student‐related matters such as acquiring timetables, requesting appointments with staff and signing in and out of school. The Student Services Office has also been re‐modelled to accommodate the new position of Attendance Officer. Congratulations to Mrs Deb Nulty, who has won this position. Over the coming weeks Deb will undertake an important process in updating all parent/caregiver contact details in preparation for the introduction of DAYMAP at the school in monitoring student attendance. Parents/Caregivers can contact Deb on her direct line on 8531 2949 to notify the school of student absence. It would be appreciated if this could be done before 9am on the day of student absence. Changes to the Start of Day Towards the end of last year the decision was made to trial a change to the school day in 2011 with lesson 1 beginning at 8.50am and Pastoral Care beginning at 11am. The purpose of this trial is to address the issue of students arriving late to school and to implement a Pastoral Care program building on the core values of the school. Parents/Caregivers are requested to support this measure and ensure their student is at school on time in readiness for lesson 1 before 8.50am.

GARDEN REJUVENATION PROJECT By Adam Sullivan and Stacy Ryan In the final week of 2010, Year 8 and 9 students embarked on a project to redevelop targeted gardens within the school. Many of the garden beds throughout the school were in need of an overhaul, and approximately 25 students volunteered their services to create sustainable and drought‐tolerant spaces that students, staff and visitors could enjoy. The project consisted of three solid days of work, 110 native plants and 18 cubic metres of red gum mulch, distributed across three garden beds at the front of the school, and a circular bed outside of the main gym entrance. Students were responsible for weed removal, planting and mulch distribution. The results truly speak for themselves – the new gardens look fantastic! Thank you so much to the Middle School students involved in the project, and we hope to continue the success of the project in 2011 with more garden rejuvenation.
