Head klubivennad, tervitan teid kõiki!

Sügis oma pimedate õhtute ja öödega edeneb. Seda toredam on vaadata meie poolt toetatud Brackmanni parki oma valguses. Olen mõned korrad õhtuti selles pargis tiiru teinud ja vaadet nautinud. Kindlasti olete sellest isegi osa saanud. Vaadates just filmi noorest Goethest meenuvad ta sõnad. Valgust, rohkem valgust. Igas mõttes. Läinud esmaspäeva õhtul kogunes palju klubivendasid õhtusele koosviibimisele. Kuulama ja mälu värskendama ufo- ja muu maavälise temaatika osas. Arved oli palunud külalisteks ettekannet tegema Igor Volke ja Juhan Aare. Juttu ja diskussiooni jätkus enamaks kui kolmeks tunniks. Bülletääni ilmumise ajaks on osad meist läbinud Pärnu rannaretke või jooksu. Kahjuks ei saanud ma sel korral kaasa lüüa, aga tänan neid, kes Rotary klubi nime võistlejate sekka viisid. Kutsun klubivendasid veel panustama meie klubi aastateo kontole! Torni kapitaalremont on lõppemas. Proovime selleks ajaks raha kokku saada. Enamusel meist on kindlad valdkonnad, mida toetame või rahastame. Siiski, olles rotariaanid Pärnumaalt saab meie abiga hoitud üks kena, imposantne ja ajalooline hoone, vähemalt järgmiseks 100 aastaks. Tänud neile, kes juba on jõudnud tegu toetada! Laupäeval sain Endla teatris hea elamuse, esietendus tükk „Mitte praegu, kallis“. Seda etendust plaanib Pärnu Koidula Lions Klubi sõbrapäeva paiku enda talviseks heategevuslikuks raha kogumise ürituseks. Oleme sellele kaasa aidanud piletite ostmisega. Ka sõpradele. Esmaspäeval kohtume Ammende villas. Lugupidamisega

Esmaspäeval toimus hotellis Victoria kohtumine Igor Volke ja Juhan Aarega. Värskendasime mälu alates viljarõngastest kuni huligaan Mathias Rusti seiklusliku õhusõiduni. Sellised õhtuloengud-ettekanded on ilmestanud meie klubi tegevust varemgi. Kui kellelgi meist on idee mõne kohtumise korraldamiseks, siis andke teada.

Tartu Hansa Rotary Klubi korraldab järjekordse heategevuskontserdi 12. novembril Pauluse kirikus. Klubi toetab juba kümmekond aastat andekaid noori. Ilves Sistersi kontsert on tore kingitus isadepäevaks! Rotary XII talvepäevad toimuvad 13-15.01.2017 Otepääl, Tehvandi spordikeskuses.

Aastateo info. President kutsub kõikki toetama klubi aastategu rahaliselt! Projekti maksumus 16920 eur. Klubi arvelt finantseeritakse projekti 4000 euroga. Lisaks on 18 klubiliiget panustanud kontole 9500 eurot. Koguda on jäänud veel 3420 eurot.

Klubikülastused Eestis

Mul oli rõõm suhelda Eesti klubide esindajatega kolmel kohtumisel – Tartus, Raplas ja Tallinnas

oktoobri alguses. Need üritused kulgesid soojas õhkkonnas ja arutelu oli tulemuslik. Tahaksin

näha rohkem koostööd Soome ja Eesti klubide vahel, millest oli juttu. Oleks tore, kui klubid

võtaksid üksteisega koostöö elavdamiseks aktiivselt ühendust. Mul oli ka hea meel tutvuda äsja

avatud Eesti Rahva Muuseumiga Tartus. Võin soojalt soovitada selle külastamist kõigile

Avamine kell 12. Kohal oli 25 liiget. Kohaloleku protsent 66. Külalised: Kalver Tammik ja Ingmar Saksing ja Tarmo Krimm. President avas koosoleku, protokollis sekretär. President rääkis seinale projekteeritud bülletääni taustal klubi tegemistest ning kutsetest rotariaanide üritustele. Avaldas tänu võrkpalli turniirist osavõtnuile. President andis üle tänukirja Ivo Aulikule klubi aastateo 500 euroga toetamise eest. Andres Laasmaa kutsel tegi ettekande Tarmo Krimm, kes omab tehnilise korraldamise kogemusi nii Eurovisioonilt kui nüüd ka Rio OM-lt. Rios oli ta OM tehnilise meeskonna töötaja elektri- ja valgustuse süsteemide alal. Põhjalikumalt nägime ja kuulsime elust-olust-tööst Rio paraolümpia näidetel.

In 1979, James Bomar Jr., the president of Rotary at the time, traveled to the Philippines as part of Rotary’s earliest work to immunize children against polio. After he had put drops of vaccine into one baby’s mouth, he felt a child’s hand tugging on his trouser leg to get his attention. Bomar looked down and saw the baby’s brother looking up at him, saying earnestly, “Thank you, thank you, Rotary.”

Before Rotary took on the task of polio eradication, 350,000 people – nearly all of them children – were paralyzed by polio every year. That child in the Philippines knew exactly what polio was and understood exactly what Rotary had just done for his baby brother. Today, 31 years after the launch of PolioPlus, the children of the Philippines – and of nearly every other country in the world – are growing up without that knowledge, and that fear, of polio. Instead of 1,000 new cases of polio every day, we are averaging less than one per week. But as the fear of polio wanes, so does awareness of the disease. Now more than ever, it is vitally important to keep that awareness high and to push polio eradication to the top of the public agenda and our governments’ priorities. We need to make sure the world knows that our work to eradicate polio isn’t over yet, but that Rotary is in it to end it.

On 24 October, Rotary will mark World Polio Day to help raise the awareness and the funding we need to reach full eradication. I ask all of you to take part by holding an event in your club, in your community, or online. Ideas and materials are available for download in all Rotary languages at endpolio.org/worldpolioday, and you can register your event with Rotary at the same link. You can also join me and tens of thousands of your fellow Rotarians for a live-streamed global status update at 6 p.m. Eastern time at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. I’ll be there along with CDC Director Tom Frieden, other experts, and inspirational presenters, sharing an inside look at the science, partnerships, and human stories of polio eradication.

It is an incredibly exciting time to be a Rotarian. We are gathering momentum for the final race to the finish: to the end of PolioPlus and the beginning of a polio-free world. It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime chance to End Polio Now, through Rotary Serving Humanity.

ShelterBox prepares for Mosul refugees.

Today marked the start of the battle to take control of Mosul back from the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS. The city is the group's last major stronghold in Iraq. But humanitarian aid agencies have known about the military offensive, giving them an unusual opportunity to prepare for the crisis.

"It is rare for the world to get early warning of a vast human catastrophe," says Chris Warham, chief executive of ShelterBox. "The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees issued a paper in July saying this would likely be the biggest humanitarian crisis of the year — and we better get prepared."

ShelterBox, Rotary's project partner for disaster relief, and ACTED, a French nongovernmental aid agency, have teams in the city of Irbil in Iraqi Kurdistan, 53 miles (85 km) east of Mosul. They have been working since July to get aid supplies ready so they can respond quickly as the battle unfolds.

"By tomorrow, 650 of the 3,000 tents that have been deployed to Irbil will arrive," says Warham. He estimates that, without the early notice, it would have taken ShelterBox at least two and a half weeks to gather these supplies.

Tens of thousands of people have already been displaced from Mosul and surrounding areas since March. The current round of fighting could last weeks or even months and is certain to raise that number, although it's unknown just how many people remain in Mosul and in which direction they might flee.

"Our aim is to get aid to displaced families as quickly as possible," says Rachel Harvey, operations coordinator at ShelterBox, who is in Irbil. "Giving people shelter and essential items such as a solar lamp, blankets, and a water carrier will allow them a degree of dignity and security to rest and recover."

Existing camps are already near or over capacity, so other possible sites are being readied. But Warham predicts that demand will almost certainly outpace supply, which could force many families to seek shelter outside managed camps in an inhospitable landscape during a season given to storms and below-freezing overnight temperatures.

ACTED and ShelterBox have partnered many times around the world. Most recently they worked together to help people in Haiti, where the deadly force of Hurricane Matthew caused a surge in cholera cases and left thousands homeless.

The Islamic State has controlled Mosul, the oil-rich capital of Nineveh province, since June 2014. Before the invasion, the city was Iraq's second-largest and one of its most diverse.
