Welcome to Pro Tools | Software from Avid. Thisguide explains how to install and authorizePro Tools software on Mac and Windows systems.For detailed information on configuring yourPro Tools system, and for complete informationabout Pro Tools system capabilities and functional-ity, see the Pro Tools Reference Guide (availablefrom the Help menu in Pro Tools).

There are two types of Pro Tools software:

Pro Tools HD

Pro Tools | HD Software can be used with the fol-lowing hardware:

Pro Tools | HDX hardware for expanded I/O,low latency monitoring, and dedicated DSP forplug-in processing and large mixer configura-tions

Pro Tools | HD Native hardware for expandedI/O and low latency monitoring

Avid 003 family, Pro Tools | Eleven Rack,Pro Tools | Mbox (3rd generation), andPro Tools | Fast Track hardware

Pro Tools

Pro Tools software can be used with the followinghardware:

Avid 003 family, Eleven Rack, Mbox (3rd gener-ation), and Fast Track hardware

Third-party audio hardware with supported CoreAudio (Mac) or ASIO (Windows) drivers,including built-in audio hardware on Mac com-puters

System Requirements and CompatibilityThe following are required to install and authorizePro Tools software:

A DVD drive (if you purchased a boxed versionof Pro Tools with an installer disc)

An Internet connection (to download thePro Tools installer and Pro Tools authorization)

The following are required to run Pro Tools soft-ware:

A qualified Windows or Mac computer

A qualified audio interface (or built-in audio ca-pability)

An iLok USB key (2nd generation) to authorizePro Tools software

Avid can only assure compatibility and providesupport for hardware and software it has tested andapproved. For complete system requirements and alist of qualified computers, operating systems, harddrives, and third-party devices, visitwww.avid.com/compatibility.

About iLokPro Tools software is authorized using an iLokUSB key (2nd generation) from PACE Anti-Pi-racy. An iLok can hold hundreds of authorizationsfor all of your iLok-enabled software. After a soft-ware license is placed on an iLok, you can use theiLok to authorize that software on any computer.

If you purchased a boxed version of Pro Tools, orAvid hardware bundled with a version ofPro Tools or Pro Tools HD software, it includesan iLok USB key (2nd generation) and anactivation card with a printed activation code.

If you are upgrading from a previous version ofPro Tools or Pro Tools HD software, you willneed to use your own iLok USB key (a 2nd gen-eration iLok is required). You will receive anactivation code through your online Avid ac-count.

MIDI RequirementsUSB, FireWire, and PCI MIDI interfaces work ef-fectively with Pro Tools systems on Mac or Win-dows.

Hard Drive RequirementsFor optimal audio recording and playback, allPro Tools systems require one or more qualifiedhard drives.

Avoid Recording to the System Drive

Recording to your system drive is allowed, but notrecommended. Recording and playback on a sys-tem drive may result in lower track counts andfewer plug-ins.

Creating Your Avid AccountAn Avid account is required to activate Pro Toolssoftware, and, if you purchased a download versionof Pro Tools, to download your software.

If you dont have an Avid account, visitwww.avid.com/myavid to create your account.

Retrieving Your Pro Tools | Software LicenseWhen you purchase Pro Tools, you receive an acti-vation code, either on an activation card or throughyour Avid account.

To retrieve your Pro Tools software license:

1 If you dont already have an iLok account, visitwww.ilok.com to sign up for an account.

2 Visit www.avid.com/activation and log into yourAvid account (if you dont already have an Avidaccount, click Create Your Account).

3 Enter your activation code and your iLok.comUser ID.

4 Follow the on-screen instructions to deposityour license into your iLok.com account.

Removing Previous Versions of Pro Tools | SoftwareIf you have a previous version of Pro Tools in-stalled, remove it according to the instructions inthe Installation Guide for that version.

It is possible to have Pro Tools 10.3.6 or higherinstalled at the same time as Pro Tools 11. Visitwww.avid.com/compatibility or see thePro Tools Read Me for details.


Installing Hardware DriversBefore installing Pro Tools software, install the lat-est drivers for that hardware. Refer to the documen-tation that came with your audio hardware for moreinformation. For Avid audio interfaces, downloadand install the drivers for your Avid hardware fromwww.avid.com/drivers.

Installing Pro Tools | SoftwareAfter you have installed the drivers for your audiointerface, you are ready to install Pro Tools.

Installing Pro Tools on Mac

To install Pro Tools on Mac:

1 Do one of the following:

Insert the Pro Tools Installer disc into the DVDdrive on your computer.

Download the Pro Tools Installer from your on-line Avid account.

2 Open the Pro Tools disc or disk image.

3 Double-click Install Pro Tools 11.3.pkg.

4 Follow the on-screen instructions to continue in-stallation.

5 Once the installation is complete, click Close.

Pro Tools will not recognize your audio inter-face if you do not install the drivers. If you areupgrading Pro Tools, be sure to install the lat-est drivers for your hardware.

Before installing Pro Tools, refer to thePro Tools Read Me included with the installer.

Installing Pro Tools on Windows

To install Pro Tools on Windows:

1 Make sure you are logged in as an Administratorfor the account where you want to installPro Tools.


Insert the Pro Tools Installer disc in your DVDdrive.

Download the Pro Tools Installer from your on-line Avid account.


If Windows AutoRun is enabled, a mini-browserappears. Select Install Pro Tools to begin installa-tion.

If Windows AutoRun is disabled, locate and dou-ble-click Setup.exe, and then select InstallPro Tools to begin installation.

4 Follow the on-screen instructions to continue in-stallation.

5 When the Install Wizard is done, click Finish.

Starting Up or Shutting Down Your SystemTo ensure that the components of your Pro Toolssystem communicate properly with each other,start them in a particular order.

On Windows, if the User Account Control dia-log appears, click Allow. Several messagesare displayed during installation that can beignored, including multiple Found NewHardware dialogs and A Problem Oc-curred During Hardware Installation. If youget a warning dialog about the driver notpassing Windows Logo testing, click ContinueAnyway.


Start up your Pro Tools system in this order:

1 Make sure all your equipment (including yourcomputer) is off.

2 Lower the volume of all output devices in yoursystem.

3 For systems with an expansion chassis, turn onthe chassis.

4 Turn on any external hard drives. Wait ten sec-onds for them to spin up to speed.

5 Turn on any control surfaces.

6 Turn on any MIDI interfaces and devices, orsynchronization peripherals.

7 For systems requiring external power, turn onthe hardware (such as HD I/O or 003). Wait atleast fifteen seconds for the audio interface toinitialize and the status LEDs to stop flashing.

8 Turn on your computer.

9 Launch Pro Tools (see Launching and Autho-rizing Pro Tools | Software on page 5).

Shut down your Pro Tools system in this order:

1 Quit Pro Tools (on Mac: Pro Tools > Quit, or onWindows: File > Exit).

2 Turn off or lower the volume of all output de-vices in your system.

3 Turn off your computer.

4 For systems that use hardware requiring externalpower, turn off the hardware.

5 Turn off your Pro Tools audio interfaces.

6 For systems with an expansion chassis, turn offthe chassis.

7 Turn off any MIDI interfaces, MIDI devices, orsynchronization peripherals.

8 Turn off any control surfaces or worksurfaces.

9 Turn off any external hard drives.

Launching and Authorizing Pro Tools | SoftwareTo launch and authorize Pro Tools software:

1 Make sure your audio interface is connected toyour computer and powered on.

2 Make sure your iLok (2nd generation) is con-nected to an available USB port on your com-puter.


On Mac, double-click the application icon inMacintosh HD/Applications/Pro Tools.

On Windows, double-click the Pro Tools short-cut on the desktop (or double-click theapplication in Program Files\Avid\Pro Tools).

4 When the Pro Tools activation screen appears,click Activate.

5 Log into your iLok.com account. (If you donthave an iLok account, click Create New Ac-count.)

6 When the list of available licenses appears, se-lect the license for Pro Tools 11 and click Next.

7 Select your iLok as the location for the licenseand click Next.

8 After activation is complete, click Continue tolaunch Pro Tools.

Do not remove the iLok while launching orrunning Pro Tools.


Configuring Your Pro Tools SystemAfter you have installed, authorized, and launchedPro Tools software, you can configure yourPro Tools system to meet the specific needs of yourstudio. For detailed information on configuringyour Pro Tools software, see the Pro Tools Refer-ence Guide (available from the Help menu inPro Tools).

Optimizing a Mac System for Pro Tools | SoftwareTo ensure optimum performance with Pro Tools,configure your computer first.

Before configuring your computer, make sure youare logged in as an Administrator for the accountwhere you want to install Pro Tools. For details onAdministrator privileges in Mac OS X, see yourApple OS X documentation.

For a complete list of recommended optimiza-tions for your operating system, visitwww.avid.com/optimize.

Do not use the Mac OS X automatic SoftwareUpdate feature, as it may upgrade your systemto a version of Mac OS that has not yet beenqualified for Pro Tools. For details on quali-fied versions of Mac OS, visitwww.avid.com/compatibility.

Turning Off Energy Saver

To turn off the Energy Saver feature:

1 Choose System Preferences from the Applemenu.

2 Click Energy Saver.

3 Set the Computer Sleep setting to Never.

4 Set the Display Sleep setting to Never.

5 Deselect Put the hard disk(s) to sleep whenpossible option.

Disable or Reassign Mac Keyboard Shortcuts Used by Pro Tools

To have the full complement of Pro Tools key-board shortcuts, you need to disable or reassignconflicting Mac OS X Keyboard Shortcuts in theApple System Preferences.

To disable or reassign Mac keyboard shortcutsused by Pro Tools:

1 From the Apple menu, choose System Prefer-ences.

2 Click Keyboard.

3 Click the Keyboard Shortcuts tab.

4 You can disable or reassign Mac OS keyboardshortcuts that conflict with Pro Tools keyboardshortcuts. The following list includes severalcommon Mac keyboard shortcuts that, depend-ing on the make and model of your Mac, mayalso be used by Pro Tools:

Enabling Journaling for Audio Drives

To yield higher performance from audio drives, en-able journaling.

To enable journaling:

1 Launch the Disk Utility application, located inApplications/Utilities.

2 Select the volume in the left column of the DiskUtility window.

3 Select Enable Journaling in the toolbar.

Optimizing a Windows System for Pro Tools | SoftwareTo ensure optimum performance with Pro Tools,configure your computer before using Pro Toolshardware and software.

Before configuring your computer, make sure youare logged in as an Administrator for the accountwhere you want to install Pro Tools. For details onAdministrator privileges, see your Windows docu-mentation.

Required Optimizations

To ensure optimum performance with Pro Tools,configure the following settings before usingPro Tools hardware and software.

Disabling User Account ControlTo disable User Account Control (UAC):

1 Choose Start > Control Panel.

2 Click User Accounts and Family Safety.

3 Click User Accounts.

4 Click on Change User Account Control settings.

5 Set the slider to Never Notify.

6 Click OK.

When you are finished changing Windows sys-tem settings, restart your computer.


Configuring System Standby and Power Management

When using Pro Tools, the Windows SystemStandby power scheme must be set to Always On.This prevents long record or playback passes fromstopping due to system resources powering down.

To configure Windows Power Management:

1 Choose Start > Control Panel.

2 Click on System and Security.

3 Click Power Options.

4 Click on the arrow to Show Additional Plans.

5 Select High Performance.

6 Click Change plan settings.

7 Click Change advanced power settings.

8 In the Power Options dialog, reveal Hard disk >Turn off hard disk after.

9 Click Setting option.

10 Select the value in the Setting (Minutes) fieldand press Backspace on your computer key-board or scroll the value to Never.

11 Click OK. The hard disk setting changes toNever and the Power Options dialog closes.

12 In the Edit Plan Settings window, click Savechanges and close the window.

Pro Tools automatically switches to the HighPerformance Power Management settings onlaunch. Windows reverts to the previously se-lected Power Management settings (if differ-ent) when exiting Pro Tools. Consequently,when optimizing the Power Management set-tings for Pro Tools, you should always onlyoptimize the High Performance configuration.

Recommended OptimizationsPro Tools can also be affected by other softwareand hardware drivers installed on your computer.For best possible performance, it is recommended(but not required) that you do the following:

Avoid running any unneeded programs at thesame time as Pro Tools.

Turn off any software utilities that run in thebackground, such as Windows Messenger,calendars, and disk maintenance programs.

Turn off any non-essential USB devices whilerunning Pro Tools.

Optional OptimizationsThe following system optimizations may helpPro Tools perform better on some systems. It is rec-ommended that you only try these optimizations ifnecessary, as they may disable or adversely affectthe functionality of other programs on your system.

Adjusting Processor Scheduling

To adjust Processor Scheduling performance:

1 Right-click Computer and choose Properties.

2 Click Advanced system settings.

3 Under the Performance section, click the Set-tings button.

4 In the Performance Options window, click theAdvanced tab.

5 Under the Processor Scheduling section, selectthe Background Services option.

6 Click OK to close the Performance Options win-dow.

7 Click OK to close the System Properties win-dow.


Disabling System Startup Items

The fewer items in use by your computer, the moreresources are available for Pro Tools. Some startupapplications may be consuming unnecessary CPUresources, and can be turned off.

If you disable any of the following startup items, doso carefully:

Portable media serial number (required for someapplications that utilize a copy protection key)

The Plug and Play service

Event log

Cryptographic services

To Disable System Startup Items:

1 From the Start menu, type msconfig in StartSearch and press Enter to open the SystemConfiguration Utility.

2 Under the General tab, choose Selective Startup.

3 Deselect Load Startup Items and click OK.

4 Click Restart to restart the computer.

5 After restarting, the computer displays a SystemConfiguration message. Check to see ifPro Tools performance has increased before youdeselect the Don't show this message againoption. If performance has not changed, runmsconfig and return your computer StartupSelection back to Normal Startup - load all de-vice drives and services. Alternatively, try dis-abling Startup items and non-essential processesindividually.

Backing Up Your SystemAfter setting up your system and installingPro Tools, you should save an image of your sys-tem drive using a backup utility. By doing this, youcan quickly restore your system configuration andsettings if you encounter any problems.

Instalar el programa Pro Tools | SoftwareCuando hayas instalado los drivers para tu interfacede audio, podrs instalar Pro Tools.

Instalacin de Pro Tools en sistemas Mac

Para instalar Pro Tools en un sistema Mac:

1 Efecta uno de estos procedimientos:

Inserta el disco de instalacin de Pro Tools en launidad de DVD.

Descarga el instalador Pro Tools de tu cuentaAvid online.

2 Abre el disco de Pro Tools o una imagen dedisco.

3 Instale Pro Tools 11.3.pkg haciendo doble clic.

Para instalar Pro Tools en Windows:

1 Inicia sesin como administrador en la cuentadonde desees instalar Pro Tools.

En Windows, si se abre el cuadro de dilogoControl de cuentas de usuario, haz clic enPermitir. Durante la instalacin aparecernvarios mensajes que se pueden pasar por alto,como varios cuadros de dilogo sobre hardwarenuevo encontrado y sobre problemas durante lainstalacin del hardware. Si aparece unaventana que indica que el driver no supera laprueba del logotipo de Windows, contina detodos modos.


Encendido y apagado del sistemaPara que haya una correcta comunicacin entre loscomponentes del sistema Pro Tools, es precisoseguir un orden de inicio concreto.

Inicia el sistema Pro Tools en este orden:

1 Asegrate de que todos los componentes(incluido el ordenador) estn apagados.

2 Baja el volumen de todos los dispositivos desalida del sistema.

3 En los sistemas con un chasis de expansin,enciende primero el chasis.

4 Enciende los discos duros externos. Espera diezsegundos para que alcancen la velocidad defuncionamiento.

5 Enciende las superficies de control.

6 Enciende los interfaces y los dispositivos MIDI,o los perifricos de sincronizacin.

7 En el caso de sistemas que necesitanalimentacin externa, enciende el equipo (porejemplo, HD I/O o 003). Espera al menos quincesegundos para que el interface de audio se iniciey los indicadores LED de estado dejen deparpadear.

8 Enciende el ordenador.

9 Inicia Pro Tools (consulta Ejecucin yautorizacin de Pro Tools | Software en lapgina 33).

Apaga el sistema Pro Tools en este orden:

1 Sal de Pro Tools (en Mac: Pro Tools Quit, o enWindows: File Exit).

2 Apaga o baja el volumen de todos losdispositivos de salida del sistema.

3 Apaga el ordenador.

4 En los sistemas con hardware que requierealimentacin externa, apaga el hardware.

5 Apaga los interfaces de audio de Pro Tools.

6 En los sistemas con un chasis de expansin,apaga el chasis.

7 Apaga los interfaces y los dispositivos MIDI, olos perifricos de sincronizacin.

8 Apaga cualquier superficie de control o detrabajo.

9 Apaga los discos duros externos.

Ejecucin y autorizacin de Pro Tools | SoftwarePara ejecutar y autorizar el programa Pro Tools:

1 Comprueba que el interface de audio estconectado al ordenador y encendido.

2 Verifica que tu llave iLok (2. generacin) estconectada a un puerto USB disponible en tu PC.


En Mac, haz doble clic en el icono de laaplicacin en MacintoshHD/Applications/Pro Tools.

En Windows, haz doble clic en el acceso directoa Pro Tools en el escritorio (o en la aplicacin enArchivos de programa\Avid\Pro Tools).

4 Cuando aparezca la pantalla de activacin dePro Tools, haz clic en Activate.

5 Inicia sesin en tu cuenta de iLok.com. (Si notienes una cuenta de iLok, haz clic en CreateNew Account.)

6 Cuando aparezca la lista de licencias disponibles,selecciona la licencia de Pro Tools 11 y haz clic enNext.

No extraigas la iLok mientras inicias oejecutas Pro Tools.

Cuando utilices Pro Tools, establece la opcin deenerga en modo de espera de Windows en Siempreactivo. De este modo, se evita que se detengan lospases de grabacin y reproduccin prolongadosporque el sistema entra en el modo de ahorro denerga.Para configurar Administracin de energa deWindows:

1 Elige Inicio Panel de control.

2 Haz clic en Sistema y seguridad.

3 Haz clic en Opciones de energa.

4 Haz clic en la flecha para Mostrar planesadicionales.

5 Selecciona Alto rendimiento.

6 Haz clic en Cambiar la configuracin del plan.

7 Haz clic en Cambiar la configuracin avanzadade energa.

8 En el cuadro de dilogo Opciones de energa,abre Disco duro Apagar disco duro tras.

9 Haz clic en la opcin Configuracin.

10 Selecciona el valor en el campo Configuracin(minutos) y pulsa la tecla Retroceso en eltecladoo lleva el valor a Nunca.

11 Haz clic en Aceptar. La configuracin del discoduro cambia a Nunca y se cierra el cuadro dedilogo Opciones de energa.

12 En la ventana Editar la configuracin del plan,haz clic en Guardar cambios y cierra la ventana.

Pro Tools cambia automticamente a la opcinde administracin de energa Altorendimiento al iniciarse. Windows regresa a laopcin de administracin de energaseleccionada anteriormente (si la hubiere) alsalir de Pro Tools. Por consiguiente, al optimizarla opcin de administracin de energa paraPro Tools, siempre se debera optimizarnicamente la configuracin de Altorendimiento.

Optimizaciones recomendadasOtros drivers de hardware y software que estninstalados en el ordenador tambin pueden afectara Pro Tools. Para obtener un rendimiento ptimo,se recomienda (aunque no es imprescindible) quehagas lo siguiente:

Evita la ejecucin simultnea de otros programasinnecesarios al mismo tiempo que Pro Tools.

Cierra las utilidades de software que se ejecutenen segundo plano, por ejemplo, WindowsMessenger, calendarios y programas demantenimiento de discos.

Mientras utilizas Pro Tools, apaga todos losdispositivos USB que no sean imprescindibles.

Optimizaciones opcionalesLas siguientes optimizaciones pueden contribuir aun mejor funcionamiento de Pro Tools en algunossistemas. Se recomienda usar estas optimizacionessolamente cuando sea necesario, ya que puedendesactivar otros programas del sistema o repercutirnegativamente en su funcionamiento.
