Falsettos explores the life of a charm-ing, intelligent, neurotic gay man namedMarvin, his wife, lover, about-to-be-Bar-Mitzvahed son, their psychiatrist, and theneighbors next door. A timely portrait ofmiddle-class family dynamics, the musicalmanages to remain buoyant and satiricallyperceptive even as it moves towards itsheartbreaking conclusion.

Falsettos on Live from Lincoln Centerwill be broadcast on 3-2 Friday, the 27th at9:00 p.m. On 3-1, it can be seen Saturday, the28th at 7:00 p.m.

Florence, Italy, the cradle of theRenaissance, gave rise to some of theworlds most celebrated artists, archi-tects, and scientists, includingMichelangelo, Brunelleschi, andGalileo. Yet, little is known of the citystrailblazing female artists.

The Emmy-winning InvisibleWomen: Forgotten Artists of Flo-rence sheds light on the lives andworks of these largely forgotten Re-naissance-era painters, revealing thehidden half of one of the worldsmost beloved art cities. A group of artists, historians, and restorers work to remove cen-turies of decay to bring two of the precious pieces of art historysalvaged from storage facilities throughout Italyback to life: Lam-entation With Saints by Plautilla Nelli (1524-1588), a cloistered nunand the first known female painter of Florence, and David andBathsheba, by Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1653).

Invisible Women: Forgotten Artists of Florence airs on 3-2 Mon-day, the 2nd at 10:30 p.m., Sunday, the 8th at 7:30 p.m./10:30, andFriday, the 13th at 11:30 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Thursday, 31st, at 3:30 p.m.

Along with new seasons of both Poldark and The Durrells inCorfu, Masterpeice adds a bit of haute couture to the Octoberlineup with The Collection, the newest addition to Drama Sunday.

Dressing up was never so daz-zling or dangerous as in TheCollection, a new seven-partseries. Set in post-World War II,the richest man in France hascharged fashion designer PaulSabine (Richard Coyle) with thetask of restoring Paris to its sta-tus as the fashion capital of theworld. Sabines dresses are a

sensation, alluring displays of color, form and fabricfor those whocould afford them. Only Pauls shady past and an inconvenientcorpse block his way to success.

Widely regarded as the genius behind his studios stunning de-signs, Paul is in fact purveying the work of his debauched brotherClaude (Tom Riley), the self-destructive genius behind Pauls knock-out gowns.

The Collection on Masterpiece airs on 3-2 Sundays at 7:00 p.m.beginning the 8th. On 3-1, it can be seen Sundays at 8:00 p.m. be-ginning the 8th and Mondays at 2:00 p.m. beginning the 9th.

Mark Twains Journey to Jerusalem: Dreamland retraces MarkTwains footsteps as a cub reporter on a bold adventure sailing

around the Mediterranean and throughout Eu-rope in 1867, with Jerusalem and the Holy Landas his ultimate destination. Narrated by MartinSheen, the documentary reveals Twains deeprooted and complex relationship with religion. The 31-year-old reporter convinced a SanFrancisco newspaper to pay for his excursionin exchange for writing about his travels in regu-lar dispatches.

Twains childhood imaginings of theHoly Land are confronted with a vastly differ-ent reality; the monuments, cities, and land-

scapes arent as grand as the Scriptures led him to believe. He alsofinds himself disillusioned by the poverty and squalor he witnessesbeneath the splendor of European culture.

Twain paints an original and irreverent portrait for his eager read-ers back home. It is the first time that an American audience seesEurope and the Holy Land from the perspective of the Everyman. Twains letters and articles are edited into a best-selling travel-ogue, The Innocents Abroad, which establishes Twain as the voiceof Americafunny, sarcastic, and powerfully opinionated. The film features never-before-seen letters written by Twain andthe only film footage of him in existence, as well as the first everfootage shot in Jerusalem. Mark Twains Journey to Jerusalem: Dreamland airs on 3-2Monday, the 9th at 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, the 15th at 10:00 a.m./6:00p.m. On 3-1, it airs Monday, the 9th at 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, the10th at 3:00 p.m.

After his death, writer Edgar Allan Poe(1809-1849) became a global icon of modernliterature.Creating the detective fiction genrewith The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841),Poe wrote over 100 short stories and poemsaltogether.

Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive on Ameri-can Masters draws on the rich palette of Poesevocative imagery and sharply drawn plots to tell the real story ofthe notorious author.

The documentary explores the misrepresentations of Poe as adrug-addled madman akin to the narrators of his horror stories.Thiscaricature is thanks, in large part, to a high-profile obituary filledwith falsehoods, written by his literary rival Rufus W. Griswold.

Poe was an influentialand brutally honestliterary critic andmagazine editor, who also invented the detective protagonist withhis character C. Auguste Dupin, refined the science fiction genre, andpopularized short stories, actually writing more comedies than horror.

An orphan in search of family, love, and literary fame, Poestruggled with alcoholism and was also a product of early 19th cen-tury American urban life: depressed from the eras high mortalityrate and the struggles of living in poverty. Poe famously died undermysterious circumstances and his cause of death remains unknown.

The film combines dramatized re-enactments of key moments inPoes life, readings from Poes works, and interviews to reveal howPoe tapped into what it means to be human in a sometimes frighten-ing world.

American Masters Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive can be seenon 3-2 Monday, the 30th at 8:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Monday, the30th at 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday, the 31st at 2:00 p.m.

The Second Opinion panel of experts discusses the drug epi-demic in the U.S., and offers advice about how to recognize thesigns and symptoms of drug abuse, and cutting-edge informationon prevention and effective treatment.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,heroin-related overdose deaths have more than quadrupled since2010, and from 2014 to 2015, heroin overdose death rates increasedby 20.6%, with nearly 13,000 people dying in 2015.

Overdose: Inside the Epidemic can be seen on 3-2 Sunday, the8th at 3:00 p.m. and Monday, the 23rd at 10:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airsTuesday, the 3rd at 8:00 a.m.

For the first time in the U.S., a human embryo has been success-fully edited to correct an inherited condition. By snipping out thegene that causes a specific heart disease, scientists ensured thatthe disease could not be passed down. Their work corrected a le-thal heritable mutation in an embryo, a promising advance for par-ents who want to conceive withoutpassing a disease to their child.

Every year more than a million ba-bies are born around the world with ahereditary disease. Many of these ill-nesses are serious, and some are evenfatal. For most of history, doctorscould only treat symptoms. Then researchers began to target rootcauses, but the quest has been long, difficult, and punctuated bytragedy. Now an elite cadre of pioneerscall them gene doctorsis starting to win battles.

Through intimate stories of families whose lives are being trans-formed, Gene Doctors takes viewers to the frontlines of this medi-cal revolution.

Gene Doctors airs on 3-2 Monday, the 23rd at 9:00 p.m. and Tues-day, the 31st at 10:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Wednesday, the 11th at 8:00p.m. and Thursday, the 12th at 8:00 a.m.

The Gene Doctors Overdose: Inside the Epidemic

A knight in shining armor may sound likea character out of a storybook, but onceupon a time, knighthood was serious busi-ness, and for countless medieval fighters, their armor was what stood between life anddeath. But what was it really like to live be-neath the metal? How was that shining ar-

mor crafted and how strong was it? Could it withstand impacts fromthe most lethal weapons of the day, including crossbows, muskets, and primitive hand guns?

Nova challenged blacksmith Ric Furrer and master armorer JeffWasson to recreate parts of an elite armor originally manufacturedin the Royal Workshop founded by King Henry VIII. We trace theirsuccesses and setbacks from start to finish as they rediscover cen-turies-old metalworking secrets, then put their new armor to the ul-timate test.

Secrets of the Shining Knights on Nova airs on 3-2 Wednes-day, the 4th at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, the 7th at 10:00 p.m. On 3-1,it airs Thursday, the 5th at 4:00 p.m., Friday, the 6th at 10:00 p.m.,and Saturday, the 7th at 11:00 p.m.

Stonehenge is the grandest and most enigmatic of Europes pre-historic monuments, and it has inspired countless theories to ex-plain who built it and why. Was it an ancient cathedral or burialplace or even a Stone Age observatory or computer?

Over the last decade, fresh answers have surfaced, including thefirst scientific study of human remainsthousands of fragments ofcremated men, women, and childrenburied at the site 5,000 years ago.

Ghosts of Stonehenge

In Killer Volcanoes, Nova follows a team of volcano sleuths asthey embark on a worldwide hunt for an elusive mega-eruption thatplunged the medieval earth into a deep freeze.

The mystery begins when archaeologists find a hastily dug massgrave of 4,000 men, women, and children in London. At first theyassume its a plague pit from the Black Death, but when they date thebones, theyre a century too early. So what killed off these families?

The chronicles of that time describe a run of wild weather thatdevastated crops and spread famine across Europe. Novas expertteam looks for the signature of a colossal explosion that shot a mil-lion tons of rock and ash every second into the atmosphere, turn-ing summer into winter across the globe.

Killer Volcanoes on Nova airs on 3-2 Wednesday, the 25th at8:00 p.m. and Saturday, the 28th at 10:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Thurs-day, the 26th at 4:00 p.m., Friday, the 27th at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday,the 29th at 4:00 p.m.

Remnants ofhuge feasts that fed the labor-ers at the site have come to light. The program reveals intimate details of the Stonehenge people andwhy their power began to fade soon after they raised the mighty stones.

Turmoil & Triumph: The GeorgeShultz Years takes an in-depth look atone of the most effective Secretaries ofState in the nations history, respectedand admired by lawmakers on both sidesof the aisle. If I could pick any man for

any job in this country, said Henry Kissinger, Id always startwith George Shultz.

The three-part series includes a never-before-seen look at theinner workings of the Reagan White House. Historians provide per-spective on the personalities of not only Reagan, but First LadyNancy Reagan and others in the Administration, capturing the in-trigue and infighting as advisors compete for the ear of the Presi-dent over historic issues.

Its 1982 and President Ronald Reagan has selected George Shultzto replace Alexander Haig as Secretary of State. Ronald Reagancould not stand personal confrontation and Haig lived on personalconfrontation, says historian Richard Reeves. So its a miracle helasted even a year and a little more. George Shultz had the mostimpressive resume in the country when Reagan called him.

When Shultz takes office, the world is in turmoil: relations be-tween the U.S. and the Soviet Union are at their lowest point in adecade. The USSR has nuclear-armed missiles aimed at targets inFrance, England. and Germany. America has a new enemy in Iran,Contras are working to unseat the Communist government ofNicaragua, and the Middle East is about to explode in civil war.

Turmoil & Triumph: The George Shultz Years airs on 3-2 Sun-days at 11:00 p.m. beginning the 23rd.

Inside the Forbidden City you pass through countlessancient and intricately detailed doorways. Home to emper-ors for nearly five centuries, Beijing’s giant complex of pal-aces and temples was thepower center of imperialChina.

Now, NOVA takes youinside the Forbidden City,a masterpiece of ancientarchitecture—hidden fromwestern eyes for centu-ries—as experts work to restore the imperial complex’s fad-ing grandeur.

Constructed from 1406 to 1420, the complex consistsof 980 buildings, and it is believed—though not proven—that there are 9,999 rooms in these buildings. Investigatorsare interested in learning the design secrets that enabledthese buildings to withstand some of the world’s greatestearthquakes over the centuries.
