VOORWOORD

De culturele sector in Nederland wordt nog steeds hard getroffen door allerlei beperkingen als gevolg van COVID-19. Het zijn voor de organisatie dan ook bepaald niet de gemakkelijkste omstan-digheden om een jazzfestival zonder buitenpodia zoals Red Light Jazz te organiseren.

Ondanks de aanhoudende virale kwel-ling vindt de eerder uitgestelde 8e editie van het Red Light Jazz festival uiteinde-lijk plaats op 3, 4 en 5 september, met de focus op piano en andere toetsin-strumenten. In een kleinere setting dan we oorspronkelijk hadden beoogd, maar vol energie, goede moed en als opmaat naar een hopelijk coronavrije editie in 2022.

In het eerste weekend van september 2021 valt er op jazz-gebied, vanaf een vaste zitplaats en op 1,5 meter afstand van elkaar, dus best wat te genieten in de oude Amsterdamse binnenstad.

Red Light Jazz 2021 wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door trouwe sponsors en partners van het festival en dankzij bijdragen van het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst en Sena.

FOREWORD

The cultural sector in the Netherlands continues to be hit hard by various COVID-19 restrictions. It therefore hasn’t been all that easy to organize a jazz festival like Red Light Jazz, without outdoor stages.

However, despite the ongoing viral torment, the previously postponed 8th edition of the Red Light Jazz festival will now finally take place on September 3, 4 and 5. The focus of this year’s edition will be on the piano and other keyboard instruments. Although the setting will be smaller than we originally intended, the festival is guaranteed to be full of energy, high spirits and will serve as a prelude to a hopefully corona-free edition in 2022. There will thus be a lot of jazz to enjoy the first weekend of September 2021 in Amsterdam’s old city center. In keeping with safety measures, all guests will be assigned a fixed seat, at a distance of 1.5 meters from others.

Red Light Jazz 2021 is partially being made possible by the festival’s loyal sponsors and partners, and thanks to contributions from the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts and Sena.

Wereldwijd wordt Peter Beets gezien als een van de beste jazzpianisten. Met zijn succesvolle optredens en geliefde bewerkingen van klassieke muziek staat hij in de belangstelling van een nog altijd groeiende schare fans. In zijn prijzenkast staan onder meer een Edison (2010), de Prix Martial Solal (1998) en de Pall Mall Export Swing Award (1988). Beets levert een reeks uitstekende jazzalbums af, waaronder Chopin meets the Blues (2010), Beets meets Rosenberg, Tribute to Django Reinhardt (2018) en Our Love Is Here to Stay, Gershwin reimagined (2019).

Naast de klassieke piano speelt Beets ook graag op de Fender Rhodes. Dit instrument zorgde een halve eeuw geleden voor een kleine aardverschuiving in de muziekwereld. Met zijn Electric Band en zijn Fender Rhodes speelt Beets zaterdagavond 4 september in het TOBACCO Theater kenmerkende composities uit die tijd, met werk van Herbie Hancock en Freddie Hubbard in de hoofdrol.

Peter Beets is regarded as one of the best jazz pianists in the World. With his successful perfor-mances and beloved arrangements of classical music, he has built up a still growing fan base over the years. His trophy cabinet includes an Edison (2010)which is the Dutch equivalent of a Grammy, the Prix Martial Solal (1998) and the Pall Mall Export Swing Award (1988). On Saturday September 4, Peter Beets and his Eletric Band will play characteristic compositions from that periode in the TOBACCO Theater, including work by Herbie Hancock and Freddie Hubbard in the leading role.

Wie is er niet groot geworden met de gena-deloze saxsound van Hans Dulfer? Met zijn roemruchte en vooruitstrevende formaties (Perikels, Reflud, Big Boy) heeft Dulfer zich opgewerkt tot de bekendste saxofonist van Nederland. Om te vieren dat de nog immer opzwepend opererende saxofonist zich al meer dan vijfenzestig jaar een slag in de rondte speelt én dat hij in 2020 de niet te bevatten leeftijd bereikte van tachtig jaar, presenteert Dulfer een nieuwe, niet-te-missen band. Met gerenommeerde muzikanten en vers repertoire doorspekt met notoire Dulferklassiekers. Vanaf najaar 2020 was deze Dulfer 80 band kort te horen geweest, tot de Covid-maatregelen de tournee stil legden.

In 2021 doet Dulfer of hij niet ouder is geworden en viert hij zijn jubileum alsnog in voor- en najaar en ver daarna. Blik samen met Dulfer terug op de toekomst zonder spijt en vier feest alsof morgen nooit bestaan heeft. Wil je Hans Dulfer en zijn fantastische band dit jaar in Casa Rosso zien optreden tijdens het Red Light Jazz festival, kom dan op tijd!

With his illustrious and progressive forma-tions (Perikels, Reflud, Big Boy) Hans Dulfer has become the most famous saxophonist in the Netherlands. He also played, amongst others, with Boy Edgar, John McLaughlin, Willem Breuker, Jan Akkerman and Herman Brood.

To celebrate that the Dutch saxophonist has been playing around for more than sixty-five years and that he reached the incomprehen-sible age of eighty in 2020, Dulfer presents a new, not-to-be-missed band. With renowned musicians and a fresh repertoire interspersed with notorious Dulfer classics. From autumn 2020, this Dulfer 80 band performed briefly, until the Covid measures stopped the tour.

In 2021 Dulfer will pretend he has not aged and will still celebrate his anniversary in spring and autumn and far beyond. Look back on the future with Dulfer without regrets and celebrate as if tomorrow never existed. If you want to see Hans Dulfer and his fantastic band perform in Casa Rosso this year during the Red Light Jazz festival, be on time!

In december 2018 won jazzpianist Jasper van ’t Hof (Enschede, 1947) de prestigieuze Buma Boy Edgar Prijs, de belangrijkste prijs in Nederland op het gebied van jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek. Een verdiende erkenning voor het imposante oeuvre van Jasper van ’t Hof, het resultaat van vijftig jaar professioneel musiceren. Zowel op piano als achter synthesizers en andersoortige keyboards heeft Van ’t Hof zich decennialang als een genre-overstijgend instrumentalist en componist bewezen. Jazz is altijd een ruim begrip gebleven voor Van ’t Hof die zich binnen alle stijlen van freebop tot jazzrock, free-jazz en fusion heeft begeven en zich ook na vijftig jaar niet op een bepaalde richting laat vastpinnen.

Van ’t Hof verlegde zijn werkterrein al vroeg naar het buitenland waar hij eveneens werd herkend als een groot musicus met een zeldzaam sterke podiumuitstraling. Zijn zogeheten X-Factor maakt nog altijd het verschil. Waar Van ‘t Hof ook optreedt, altijd lijkt er iets bijzonders te gaan gebeuren. Dat zal op zaterdag 4 september in De Waalse Kerk niet anders zijn als Jasper plaatsneemt achter de prachtige Bösendorfer vleugel.

Jazz has always been a broad concept for Van ’t Hof, who has masterfully moved within all styles, from free bop to jazz rock, free-jazz and fusion. Even after 50 years, he cannot be pinned down to a particular direction.

Early on, Van ’t Hof shifted his field of activity abroad, where he has earned recognition as a great musician with an exceptionally strong stage presence. Jasper has the so called X-Factor. Wherever he performs, something extraordinary always seems to take place. That will not be any different on Saturday, September 4th in The Walloon Church as Jasper takes a seat behind the beautiful Bösendorfer grand piano.

MARCO MEZQUIDA (SOLO)

Pianist Marco Mezquida heeft alles in huis om de Steinway D-concertvleugel van het Bimhuis in vuur en vlam te zetten. In zijn thuisland Spanje wordt hij al op handen gedragen vanwege zijn duizelingwekkende solo-optre-dens. Volgens de grote krant El Mundo stroomt er een adembenemende hoeveelheid muziek door zijn aderen en beheerst hij alle mogelijke pianostijlen, van barok tot avant-garde. Mezquida stond al eerder op het podium met jazzhelden als Lee Konitz en Bill McHenry.

Marco Mezquida treedt op in het Bimhuis in het kader van de 8ste editie van het Red Light Jazz festival. Red Light Jazz ontstond op de Wallen en organiseert sinds 2014 ieder jaar in het festivalweekend jazzoptredens op steeds meer locaties in de oude Amsterdamse binnenstad. Deze door COVID-19 uitgestelde editie van Red Light Jazz wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door financiële ondersteuning van SENA en het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst (AFK).

Pianist Marco Mezquida has what it takes to make the Bimhuis erupt during the festival Red Light Jazz. In his home country Spain he is being honored for his dazzling solo perfor-mances. According to the popular newspaper El Mundo there’s a breathtaking amount of music flowing through his veins, and he has mastered every possible piano school, from baroque to avant-garde. Mezquida has shared the stage with jazz luminaries such as Lee Konitz and Bill McHenry.

Marco Mezquida will perform at the Bimhuis during the 8th edition of the Red Light Jazz festival. Red Light Jazz originated in the renowned Red Light District of Amsterdam. Since 2014 it has been organizing an incre-asing amount of gigs in locations all over the old city center. This edition of Red Light Jazz, which was postponed in 2020 due to COVID-19, was made possible through financial support of SENA and AFK.

In navolging van zijn vader, die professioneel drummer was, ging John Engels vanaf 1953 ook met drummen zijn geld verdienen. Hij speelde onder meer in het trio van Pia Beck en met de Surinaamse saxofonist Kid Dynamite en was 10 jaar lang de vaste slagwerker van de groep van Cees Slinger, Diamond Five. Engels was tevens lid van de bigband van Boy Edgar en speelde vaak met Louis van Dijk en Jacques Schols voor radio en televisie. Deze drie Nederlandse topmusici maakten eveneens platen samen.

De inmiddels 86-jarige John Engels speelde met talloze grootheden uit de Amerikaanse jazz. Engels kreeg een Bird-Award op het North Sea Jazz Festival (1985), de Boy Edgar Prijs (1989) en kreeg zes Edisons voor zijn platen. Engels maakte ook diverse platen met de Amerikaanse trompet-tist en zanger Chet Baker en tourde in de jaren ‘80 tweemaal met Baker door heel Japan. Het John Engels Quartet brengt zondag 5 september in de Koninklijke Industrieele Groote Club John's meest favoriete Chet Baker nummers ten gehore in een weergaloos 'Tribute to Chet Baker' concert.

Following his father, who was a professional drummer, John Engels started to earn his money with playing drums in 1953. He played in the trio of Pia Beck and with the Surinamese saxophonist Kid Dynamite. For 10 years Engels was the regular drummer of Cees Slin-ger's group, Diamond Five. Engels was also a member of Boy Edgar's big band and often played with Louis van Dijk and Jacques Schols for radio and television. These three Dutch top musicians also made records together.

John Engels, now 86, has played with many American jazz greats. He received a Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival (1985), the Boy Edgar Prize (1989) and received six Edisons for his records. Engels also made several records with American trumpeter and singer Chet Baker and toured Japan twice with Baker in the 1980s. On Sunday 5 September in the Clubzaal of the Royal Industrieele Groote Club, The John Engels Quartet will play John's favorite Chet Baker songs in a fenomenal 'Tribute to Chet Baker' concert.

In gesprek met Arthur Herman,directeur/eigenaar van Zip Records

Zip Records is een onafhankelijk platenlabel, gevestigd in Amsterdam. Wat ooit in 1997 begon in San Francisco (VS) verhuisde in 2013 naar de “op één na meest vruchtbare plek op aarde voor muziek”. Sinds de oprichting heeft Zip Records ruim 185 platen uitgebracht in samenwerking met meer dan 100 artiesten en produceert daarnaast platen voor andere musici die passen bij het DNA van Zip en wereldwijde distributie verdienen.

Na een carrière als advocaat in Denver en in San Francisco, ontmoette Zip Records-baas Arthur Herman tijdens een reis naar Tokyo de musici van de Zweedse formatie ‘The Merrymakers’, waarvan hij kort daarvoor een Cd had gekregen van een vriend. Ze raakten bevriend en begonnen een samenwerking. Kort daarna nam Herman het Australische label Spinning Top over, doopte het om tot Zip Records Australia en pendelde heen en weer tussen San Francisco en Perth en boekte grote successen.

Bij het SXSW (South by Southwest) Festival in Austin (Texas) kwam hij in contact met een delegatie van Muziek Centrum Nederland die zeer veel belangstelling hadden om een dergelijk evenement in Nederland te organiseren. Dit wekte direct Arthur’s interesse in Nederland, de Nederlandse manier van zakendoen en in een land

waarvan de overheid de kunsten enorm stimuleert en promoot: “Dit is in een land zo groot als de Verenigde Staten een stuk lastiger. Ook het krijgen van media exposure is hier in Nederland zoveel eenvoudiger.”

De doelstelling van Zip Records is om gerenommeerde Nederlandse artiesten zoals Monique Klemann, Julia Zahra, Alain Clark, Angela Moyra, Sabrina Starke, JB Meijers, Snowapple, en Birgit Schuurman, via een eigen wereldwijd distributienetwerk meer internationale bekendheid te geven. Het spreekt voor zich dat de kwaliteit van de muziek en de musici prevaleert, maar Zip Records werkt graag met musici die een avontuurlijke inslag hebben en met wie het prettig samenwerken is. Naast muziek is ook humor een universele taal en gaan daardoor goed samen!

Arthur: “Vier jaar geleden ontmoette ik Marcel Kaatee in de Cotton Club tijdens een optreden van Montis, Goudsmit en Directie. Ik kreeg van hem het Red Light Jazz fotoboek en was zeer aangenaam verrast. De professionaliteit waarmee dit festival is opgericht en wordt georganiseerd is zeer indrukwekkend. Hier wilde ik deel van uitmaken. Inmiddels hebben ZIP musici als Sabrina Starke, Hans Dulfer, Cyrille Directie, Anton Goudsmit en Frank Montis al opgetreden tijdens Red Light Jazz en zijn we sinds 2019 sponsor. Dit jaar zijn we voor het eerst GOLD sponsor.” Aldus de CEO van Zip Records.

Arthur: “Four years ago I met Marcel Kaatee in the Cotton Club during a performance by Montis, Goudsmit and Directie. He gave me the Red Light Jazz book and I was very pleasantly surprised. The professionalism with which this festival was founded and organized is truly impressive. I wanted to be a part of this. ZIP musicians such as Sabrina Starke, Hans Dulfer, Cyrille Directie, Anton Goudsmit and Frank Montis have since performed at Red Light Jazz and we have been a sponsor since 2019. This is our first year as a GOLD sponsor.”

A talk with Zip Records CEO Arthur Herman

Zip Records is an Amsterdam-based independent record label. Since its inception in San Francisco in 1997, Zip Records has produced over 185 records, collaborating closely with more than 100 artists and producing records for other musicians that match the Zip DNA and merit worldwide distribution.

Being a lawyer in San Francisco in the nineties, Arthur Herman started working for a large cruise company operating in Hawaii. One of Herman’s responsibilities was on-board entertainment, and as a member of the Pacific Maritime Bar Association, he regularly traveled to the Far East. The cruise company’s bankruptcy marked a turning point in Herman’s professional life.

Arthur exchanged his career as entertainment lawyer for a life in the music industry. It began with a Swedish band whom he encountered by accident during a business trip in Tokyo. They became friends and made plans to collaborate. He joined Australian record label Zip Records and commuted for a few years between San Francisco and Perth.
