DAY 1: Personal/Possessive; Agreement

Definitions

• Pronoun: a word that replaces a noun• Antecedent: the noun that a

pronoun replaced

Agreement• The antecedent and pronoun must agree in

number (singular or plural) and gender

– Ex: Everyone looked at his watch. Correct or Incor.?– EX: Everyone looked at their watch. C or I?– EX: Samuel watched his dog at the park. C or I?– EX: Samuel watched her dog at the park. C or I?

Personal Pronouns

Day 2: Reflexive and Intensive

• Reflexive: Pronoun that refers to the subject and is necessary to basic meaning of sentence– Ex: She gave herself the day off.

• Intensive: Pronoun that emphasizes its antecedent and is unnecessary to basic sentence meaning– Ex: David himself bought a car.

Identify each pronoun as personal, reflexive, or intensive.
