Prospectus

Haywood Academy is a special place in the heart of its community and an Academy that offers all children the chance to thrive in a creative, happy, inspiring environment.

We are one of the highest performing secondary schools in the West Midlands and a national, top performing, non-selective secondary school. The progress of our students across a rich and varied curriculum is well above national expectations. We have a simple mission – to help give your child the best start in life.

Ofsted judged the Academy to be ‘Good’ under a far tougher inspection framework than schools have been judged against before. We have now improved further in every area and we are a school that constantly wants to give our students the best in education.

As a parent or guardian, you can be assured that your child will enter an ethos of order and care which enables all students to achieve their potential. The Academy has excellent teaching staff and prides itself that they, along with a large body of skilled support staff, are focused on ensuring your child flourishes and achieves.

Our Sixth Form, established in September 2015, and situated in the Old Town Hall, Burslem and the Burslem School of Art, following a £3.1 million refurbishment, is sponsored by our Business Class Partner, Steelite International. It is also supported by 100’s of businesses through our groundbreaking and award winning Pre-Apprentice programme. It now provides our community with an 11-18 education offer fit for the 21st Century.

We also have a unique partnership with two elite universities, Cambridge and Oxford, along with our successful local partners, Keele and Staffordshire Universities, to help us deliver our ‘Excellence Academy’, which provides a traditional ‘Grammar School’ experience from Year 7, aimed at getting students ready for a top university place in the future.

Everyone who visits our school is impressed by our working atmosphere, the sense of enjoyment in learning and our strong focus on achievement. I am sure that you will feel the same and see Haywood Academy as a warm and caring place that is ideal for your child. Mr Dilesh Parmar, Principal

Inspiring Creativity & Achievement

“This year has been great. I feel like I learn something new in every lesson and because we have the same structure in all of our subjects, you always know where you are and what to do next. I’ve chosen my pathway choices for next year and I’m really confident and excited about starting my GCSEs.” Year 8 Student

We are a member of The Schools Co-operative Society, and as such are a community academy, governed by local people for the benefit of young people in the local community.

As a co-operative Academy we are guided by the values of social responsibility, equity, equality, solidarity, democracy, openness, honesty and caring for others. When you visit our Academy you will see these values shining through.

At Haywood you become part of a family, not just a school, in which everyone is valued as an individual and is also expected to make a worthwhile contribution to the family.

Our Academy motto is ‘Inspiring Creativity and Achievement’. We aim to raise aspirations, expectations and achievement for all our students in a happy, caring and successful learning environment.

Our mission is to develop highly qualified and skilled young adults who achieve to the best of their ability, who are active citizens and who are fully committed to supporting both their local and the global community.

“I was a bit nervous about coming to Haywood because it was so much bigger than my primary school. I made loads of friends on the Induction day when I came up in Year 6 and all of the teachers were really friendly too. I felt so much better by the end of that first day and was really excited to get started in September. It’s like I’ve been here for ages.”

Year 7 Student

“Haywood isn’t just about lessons. There are loads of other opportunities too. There are extra-curricular activities on every night and there is lots of choice. My favourite one has been trampolining.”

Year 9 Student

“I won’t lie, lessons at Haywood are challenging BUT that’s supposed to be how it is. When you are finding it hard, that’s when you are learning the most. The teachers are brilliant. They give you so much help and support. Every lesson has support and challenge so that you can push yourself to achieve your target grades.” Year 10 student

“The GCSE exam timetable is really demanding and sometimes you can feel quite stressed and overwhelmed. Your teachers, Form Tutor, Performance Leader, support staff in lessons - everyone is rooting for you to do your best. That’s what makes the difference at Haywood. It doesn’t matter who you are or what your target grades are - you are never on your own. Team Haywood!” Year 11 student

Haywood Academy provides a calm and ordered learning environment.

Our building is light and airy, having undergone a £9 million refurbishment to provide outstanding facilities, while the design of our classrooms gives a feeling of openness, security and inclusion. Learning facilities are cutting edge and a new state of the art hockey pitch will further add to our excellent sporting facilities. Every student is fully included and challenged, with regular and consistent assessments which track their progress and determine movement between sets and groups. Higher attaining students are nurtured and challenged through a dedicated programme of extension and enrichment activities, which includes university visits and bespoke curriculum.

Extension & enrichment activities

We offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities which run after school and at weekends.

These include a thriving Performing Arts faculty which includes the Music, Dance and Drama departments which have purpose built new studios and put on a number of high quality productions each year.

A high proportion of students also take up musical instrument lessons or belong to music groups which include an orchestra.

The learning environment

Our outstanding facilities rival any school in the country and include a brand new sports hall and dance studio, state of the art music and art rooms, a new library, industry standard ICT across the school, a new technology block incorporating 3D printing facilities, a suite of science laboratories with outstanding experimental space and an iconic learning tower which has a state of the art 4D teaching and learning cinema.

We have high standards of literacy due to an exemplary whole school reading strategy and our consistently good

and outstanding teaching is leading to our students making faster progress than students nationally. The Academy raises the aspirations of its students so that they become more ambitious and determined to succeed.

As the biggest 11-18 Academy in the City of Stoke-on-Trent with a £7.7 million budget, we will put this to good use supporting student progress.

At Haywood Academy students have three years to complete GCSE courses, providing more time for the completion of coursework and the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular activities.

We have an extensive range of development and training opportunities for our staff to ensure our students get a world class teaching experience.

We are recognised for our high quality education and world class facilities that enhance our students learning experiences and inspire them to do great things.

Behaviour and Attendance

The Academy expects the same standards of behaviour that apply in the workplace, for example, we expect students to arrive on time.

Our teachers ensure the Academy delivers a secure environment with excellent teaching. It is the student’s responsibility to be well presented, polite and courteous at all times, and we expect parents to uphold our rules so every child can succeed.

The Academy believes children should understand there are consequences associated with good and poor behaviour. With this in mind we have a consistently enforced system of rewards and sanctions to encourage hard work, reward good behaviour and promote success.

Students are monitored on a lesson by lesson basis and given a score judging their commitment to progress.

Each term, students who consistently meet our high expectations are generously rewarded with an exciting and ever changing reward programme.

Pastoral System

Performance Leaders are responsible for pastoral care at the Academy and for having an overview of student attainment, welfare and behaviour. They lead a team of tutors who work directly with students to help improve their outcomes.

The Academy operates horizontal tutor groups, which means groups are made up of students from the same year group but of varying abilities. Tutors have contact with individual students and focus their time on ensuring high levels of achievement through learning conversations.

We also have a very strict behaviour and anti-bullying policy, and place a great deal of importance on developing the personal and social skills young people need to become positive citizens.

Our aim is to ensure all students achieve their full potential, and the Academy’s Special Educational Needs Policy recognises that any child may have a “learning difficulty which calls for special educational provision”.

Our Curriculum Support Team includes specialist teachers, learning mentors and a team of teaching assistants. We are also able to provide support from a speech and language therapist, an educational psychologist, an onsite mental health nurse specialist and student counsellor.

Often parental involvement in a child’s education reduces when they reach secondary school. At Haywood Academy we are committed to ensuring this does not happen.

A key factor in the academic and personal success of young people is their parents’ engagement in their education and the communication by the school of any successes and challenges, and what can be done to help at an early stage.

Regular communication with parents is incredibly important to us. As well as our Facebook and Twitter feed we issue regular newsletters for students and parents to keep you updated about life at the Academy. In a more academically focused setting, we offer an opportunity for parents to meet their child’s tutor during the first term at the school, as well as at the scheduled parents’ meetings later in the year.

In addition, we run a series of special target-setting meetings throughout the year, while an assessment of each child’s progress is also made every term and sent to parents.

At the Academy we understand the challenges and responsibilities of being an effective parent, particularly when a child becomes a teenager.

Many parents benefit from talking about how best to support a young person through the difficult transition from child to adult, and our staff can provide advice, help and support with any aspect of your child’s academic and personal development.

We work hard to give all new students a smooth and positive transition to secondary school life, and many of your children will already have been involved in taster days, summer schools and activities at Haywood while at primary school. This is a quality programme for which we have a regional reputation.

Our transition programme is aimed at making your child feel at ease with their move to a secondary school environment. We want your child to feel confident and excited about coming to join us here at Haywood Academy.

With our team of dedicated staff working closely with primary schools, we get to know our students well by understanding their individual needs and abilities.

This proactive approach to learning ensures our teaching is tailored to the individual from the very start of their school journey, while parents are invited to the Academy during the first term to ensure that crucial partnership between home and school is established.

“We aim to raise aspirations, expectations and achievement for all our students in a happy, caring and successful learning environment.”

Dawn Clewes, Chair of Governors

“Without a doubt, my time at Haywood firmly placed me on the path to Oxford. My potential was recognised early on, and I received constant encouragement to strive for the best grades. With this support I achieved a great set of GCSEs, giving me the confidence I needed to apply to Oxford”

Jordan Williamson, former Haywood student studying Law at Trinity College, Oxford

The Excellence Academy supports high achieving students and those who wish to push themselves beyond the usual school curriculum, and encourages students to aspire to university from an early age. There is particular focus on the leading Russell Group institutions, and we work closely with both local and national universities to create a high quality learning experience that mirrors the diversity and challenge offered by grammar schools.

As part of the Excellence Academy ‘super-curriculum’, students study once a week after school, a range of topics that are supported by experts in each of the fields. Each term, students study a different subject such as archaeology, astronomy and

forensics, and carry out hands-on activities for all of these, as well as visiting university campuses and seeing these subjects in action. By the end of Year 9, members will have experienced nine new topic areas which will link in to interests they already have, as well as GCSE content and subjects available at A Level and beyond. In Year 10, members will carry out an AQA accredited Higher Project Qualification. This sets students up with the skills required later in their educational journey. This can be further built upon at Haywood Sixth Form Academy.

Entry to the Excellence Academy is open to all new entrants in Year 7, but applicants must exhibit several qualities:

• Intellectual curiosity and a love of learning.

• A commitment to excellence and high standards.

• Ambition and drive to aspire to good universities and professions.

• A willingness to be involved in our extra-curricular programme.

• Pride in achieving well, but not becoming boastful and respecting the achievements of others.

• High achievement at the end of Key Stage 2.

In response to demand from parents, students and staff, Haywood Academy launched an Excellence Academy which offers greater learning opportunities and unique experiences for students in Years 7-10.

The Academy admissions policy is available on our website at www.haywoodacademy.coop

Applying for a place at Haywood Academy

The majority of students join us at the start of Year 7 but students may join the Academy at any stage between Year 7 and 13.

The Academy serves the local community and therefore there will be no special selection criteria for entry to Haywood Academy.

Parents are reminded that we are a popular and oversubscribed school which often has a waiting list for entry in year groups.

Students in Year 11 at Haywood Academy will be given priority for entrance into Haywood Sixth Form Academy and therefore it would be wise to plan well in advance for your child, who must now remain in education until the age of 18.

Admissions for entry in Year 7 are organised via the local authority. Admissions in other year groups are dealt with directly by the school. The school’s website has an online admissions application form for parents to use for both the Academy and Haywood Sixth Form Academy.

“Whenever I have contacted the school, I have been hugely impressed by the desire to resolve any query or go above and beyond to support. I can’t recommend the school highly enough.”.

Pre-Apprenticeship ProgrammeThe innovative Pre-Apprenticeship programme approach involves two distinct elements:

• Two days per week at Haywood Sixth Form Academy studying employability skills, Maths and English. • Three days per week developing vocational skills working with one of our partner businesses.

The Pre-Apprenticeship programme option is a pre-traineeship. This is an education and training programme that is combined with real, beneficial, work experience and is focused on giving the skills and experience that employers are looking for.

We have a world class Sixth Form curriculum; if a student’s choice is university, we have a full offer of academic A-Level qualifications, mixed with a blend of BTEC level 3 qualifications. If a student’s choice is employment we have created a unique Pre-Apprenticeship curriculum based around real work experience and qualifications (our Employment Certificate is unique in the country) which will secure a job. Businesses we are working with have roles and apprenticeships that are supported by our qualifications. As soon as a student is ready for an Apprenticeship or a Higher Level Apprenticeship we will work hard to secure this. We currently have access to over 500 businesses looking to train and support students with the right attitude.
