January
24, 1988
Dear Mom
and Dad,
1988 began
with
a
literal
bang
in
Samban. Over the
last
few
years, our
local
friends have adopted the western
custom of
ringing
out the
old
and
ringing
in the new year.
Out our
way
they bang
on anything from log drums
to
tin cans
anything
to
make
a
racket for
at
least
20
minutes
(seems much longer).
Shortly after the new year began, Bonita came down with
something. Even
as
of this writing, we
still don't
know
what it
was. She was
very
miserable for
about
a week with
fever,
headache,
and
vomiting. Although we started two different
malaria treatments, neither seemed
to
do
any
good. We monitored
her condition very closely
as
dehydration is
a
serious matter in
a
remote setting
such as
ours.
Though she
was
very sick,
her
situation
never reached the emergency
state.
When we
came
in
on
our scheduled date to
attend
our Annual
Meeting,
we took her
straight to
the
doctor. He gave
her a
shot to ease her nausea,
took her off the quinine injections, and gave
her
sedatives so
she could get some
sleep.
Three days later she was well, though
washed out physically.
Not a
great way
to
begin the new year
We are
very grateful for
your
prayers
that you offered
up
on
Bonita's behalf. Whatever sh had, we
are
confident that the
Lord was the major reason for
her
recovery. Psalm
103 says that
the Lord
"heals
all your diseases."
We are
very
thankful for
that promise.
We are thankful
too
for
your continued support
of
our ministry
through your finances and prayers.
Next
month we will
attend
our
first translation workshop. We hope to complete the Joseph story
in Genesis. By this time next year we hope
to
have the majority
of
Genesis translated.
Your
support
of
our
ministry
is
helping
the Botin
people
of Papua New Guinea to
have
the Scriptures in
their language. May God bless you.
Much
love.

Dear Friends
God
is
so good He has been with
us
during the beginning
translation workshop.
Although we
didn't complete a large amount
of
new
translation work, we did
do a lot
of
revision of
previously completed material. And from
the
new things we
learned,
we probably will save ourselves a good
deal
of
time in
the
future because
of
taking care
of all the details
in the
first
drafts
rather than later. We're
so
thankful we
went
to the
workshop when
we
did. God knows the best
timing.
Our
time spent with our grammar consultant following the workshop
proved very beneficial. Our papers have been revised for the
third or
fourth times (I've lost count),
but
it looks as if
one
more
revision
will suffice,
and
then a final
proofread
should
have
them ready
for publication. It
seems
our language is
so
unique that the whole linguistic world needs to know about it.
At least, that's what our consultant thinks.
So
we are working
to
make
our
papers
of top
quality.
We
truly see God's
wisdom
in
designing
such an
intricate language. And He
has
provided great
help for
us in
deciphering it.
We are thankful to Him for
giving
us the consultant help when
we
needed it.
Our next time out in the village will be a long stint for us,
and
we
have several
goals to
accomplish
our
grammar papers, more
translation in
Genesis,
and a background study, which is a
prerequisite
to our
overall plan for ompletion
of
the
translation project for the Botin people. And we need to get the
majority
of
the
background study completed
before school begins
in September, plus the grammar
papers.
I will
be
teaching the
boys again
in September
since Merri Lynne will be
leaving at
the
end of this school year. We covet
your
prayers. We know they
make a difference.
God has used you to be a
blessing
to
us.
We are so grateful for
your
sharing
in our ministry here. God
is
so
good He just
keeps blessing and blessing. Thank you for your special prayers
and gifts of love.
Much
love.
