tos no futuro.
Though it is always a pleasure to set down some words
in works which are published and become part of the lit-
erary heritage of our town, it is with special pleasure that
I do so now.
This pleasure comes from the freshness of these pho-
tographs, which had been more or less forgotten and which
teach us and make us respect and preserve so many facets
of the history, customs and spaces of Portalegre.
The pleasure becomes even greater at the good-will
of a Portalegran. Aurélio Bentes Bravo is greatly to be
thanked for the kindness and generosity with which he,
“teacher Bentes”, has placed before all of us these precious
items from his personal collection.
Finally, a flavour of the other side of the frontier, for
it is guided by a Spaniard, who lived among us for some
time, that we come to know the town as it was in 1888.
The latter pleasure allows me to say that this issue of the
Robinson Foundation Publications is in some way dedicated
to the fruitful relations we are beginning to consolidate and
broaden with Caceres and those which, most fortunately
for us, we are in the process of developing with Plasencia.
Heritage, gratitude and friendship merge together in
this chance to see the Portalegre of 1888, looking forward
at the future.

merecimento artístico do Sr. Perez, basta chamar a aten-
Perez é a
Francisco Paino Perez
Francisco Paino Perez was a Spanish photographer with a stu-
dio in Viseu, who plied his trade in several parts of Portugal, among
which Portalegre, where he lived and worked from the beginning of
December 1887 to 14 June 1888. He set up his studio in Travessa
do Teatro, close to the former Portalegre Theatre, “in a cheerful
little back garden, offering good light and plenty of sun” as the
O Distrito de Portalegre put it in its issue of 11 January 1888.
The same article mentioned that “to justify Mr. Perez’s artis-
tic merit all that is needed is to draw attention to the numerous
specimens of his work displayed in the show-cases of the main
shops of this town and above all in the splendid photographs of
the best views of the country and to some art-works of superior
value, such as that of the painting of St. Peter by Grão Vasco in the
Cathedral of Viseu”.
Perez presented himself publicly in Portalegre by placing an
advertisement in O Distrito de Portalegre , announcing that his stu-
dio “undertakes all types of photographic work, from cartes de
visite to cabinet works; reproductions can be made of all types of
photograph, maps, paintings, interiors of buildings, etc. Group
photographs are taken in the open air, for which excellent equip-
ment is available”.
Naturally, the main activity for a photographer of the time was
portraiture, usually in the cabinet format, very popular until the
late 1800s, with the print being glued onto a card bearing the pho-
tographer’s name both in front and on the back. These were gen-
erally albumen prints1. In the article mentioned above, the author
points out, in the very picturesque terms of the journalism of the
day, that “a visit to Mr. Perez is the happiest memory of a fashion-
able young lady or of a well attired young man in love”. This was
especially so as “the exchange of portraits is the sincerest proof of
true love, of a loyal declaration and of a pure and solid affection. To
request permission from Mama and Papa, do one’s hair, attire one-
8
a prova mais frisante dum amor sincero, duma declaração leal
e dum afecto puro e firme.
linhas finas, numas sombras delicadas, nuns traços primoro-
self in a superior fashion and ask Mr. Perez to translate certain
forms and fashions and everything that goes with it, into fine
lines, delicate shading – must surely be what the Juliets of our
town rightly dream of. As for the young men, they need only
pay the most extravagant and ceremonious courtesies to Mr.
Perez for trousers and morning coat to appear without a single
wrinkle, for moustaches, gazes and smiles to convey the most
becoming expression and this in the most delicate taste”.
In his advertisements, “Mr. Perez” did in fact explain that
“all photographs are provided with a glossy finish and are most
reasonably priced, of which: for 12 portraits of the same per-
son, 2$500 réis; for 6 as above, 1$500 réis, etc.” and he added:
“petit glossy portraits also undertaken, wallet size being 1$200
réis per dozen, and 800 réis for half a dozen”. He ended with
an “N.B. – children under the age of 5 are photographed at the
usual price, as also any type of animal. The Photographer will
spend little time in this town – plates are kept”.
The Collection
Less than one month into his stay in Portalegre, Paino
Perez already had a considerable collection of photographs
of the main views of the town as it was at the time, some of
which he displayed in shop-windows. This fact is recounted by
the O Distrito de Portalegre on 25 January 1888: “Some days
ago we were at Mr. Paino Perez’s Photography Studio, in his
premises close to the theatre (...) Mr. Perez has taken pho-
tographs of an adorable delicacy and faithful likeness. And
it is not just his portraits which are wonderful and truly to
be appreciated; there are also views of the main landmarks of
Portalegre and of outlying places! Such is the way Mr. Perez
gives all Portalegrans, whether here or residing outside their
native town, novelties worthy of the highest praise and which
are at once either the satisfaction or the proof of the affection
9
e lugares dos arredores de Portalegre! De tal modo o sr. Perez
colecção receberão 11 vistas e só terão a pagar 10. È aprovei-
tar a ocasião.
No final deste
and commitment previously made by enamoured and captive
hearts, or, on the other hand, a souvenir of things and places
which saw our first days or years”. The writer of the article
goes on to say that “for the views and landscapes and photo-
graphs of the main landmarks and monuments of Portalegre,
Mr. Perez has an account open for subscriptions at Mr. Fer-
nando dos Santos Gallope’s shop in Pocinho, and in Mr. Mala-
to’s Cafe, in Carreira Street”.
Towards the end of February, Paino Perez placed another
advertisement in the newspaper, where reference is first
made to his collection of views of Portalegre: “The photogra-
pher, Francisco Paino Perez, currently of this town, informs
the esteemed public that, having to leave on personal busi-
ness, he will only be here until the 4th of next month, so that
those persons wishing to be photographed can do so until
the above date. He likewise makes public the fact that he has
nearly concluded his collection of views of the main land-
marks and monuments of Portalegre. Those persons wish-
ing to subscribe to this collection will receive 11 views and
will only have to pay for 10. Do not miss this opportunity.
He advises the public that he also has for sale views of other
towns of the kingdom, and will go to any residence to take
photographs at current prices”.
In actual fact, he would not remain in Portalegre only
until 4 March. He was still there at the end of the month (and
would remain so until mid-June) and had a further advertise-
ment published in O Distrito de Portalegre of 28 March 1888,
entitled “Views of Portalegre”, reading as follows: “The Pho-
tographer P. Perez has for sale magnificent collections of 12
views of Portalegre, of the main squares and prettiest sights
of Portalegre, appropriate for large albums or to adorn a draw-
ing-room wall. There are 12 of them, but the buyer only pays
for 11, as they cost a mere 3$300 réis in Portalegre.

destino a Castelo Branco, o sr.
lado “Oito dias no Alentejo.
After this advertisement, which was reprinted in a
further two issues, the newspaper concerned only men-
tioned Paino Perez to announce his departure from Por-
talegre on 13 June 1888. It went as follows: “En route to
Castelo Branco, Mr. Paino Perez, the distinguished pho-
tographer, leaves this town tomorrow, Thursday. Mr. Perez
resided among us for some months and was the author of a
number of magnificent works. It is to be hoped that he will
be received in Castelo Branco with all the courtesy which he
deserves, and that his photographic work will be appreci-
ated as is meet and just”.
There was little more we were able to find after research-
ing this Spanish photographer. His stay in Evora was recorded
by the Sul newspaper, in its issue no. 31 of 8 May 18812, as a
result of research by Carmen Almeida.
In his História da imagem fotográfica em Portugal. 1839-
19973, Antonio Sena, although not mentioning the pho-
tographer, does reproduce a photo of the Corro in Portale-
gre taken by Paino Perez. He does so, however, to mention a
wood engraving studio owned by the editor of Occidente, who
in his printing used xylography to reproduce photographs,
since zincography was still in its early stages in typography.
The magazine under discussion did in fact, to illustrate an
article signed by Gervásio Lobato titled “Oito dias no Alen-
tejo. Notas de Viagem”, use 3 etchings “on Paino Perez’s pho-
tography”, two being of Portalegre (view of the Church of
St. Christopher and Corro) and one of Castelo de Vide (view
of the Virgin of Penha). We have never seen an original of the
latter, which does not mean it has not survived
The Exhibition
The collection now on display consists of thirteen photo-
graphs, with the original albumen formats of 16.5 x 22.5 cm,
17
no formato 23,5 x 31 cm.
A todas é comum a legenda impressa a vermelho em
rodapé, “F.P. Perez, - Photographo.” à esquerda e “Vizeu” à
direita.

“Vizeu” on the right.
Although Paino Perez had a studio in Portalegre for six
months, he did not alter the original printing on his mount-
ing cards, probably because he had a large supply of these from
the days when his main laboratory was in Viseu.
However, four of them display in black print a descrip-
tion of the photographer’s theme, probably typographed
locally, and which is centrally placed, a little below the above
mentioned captions.
The first advertisement Paino Perez had placed for his
collection of “Views of Portalegre” referred, as readers may
remember, to 11 photographs, these having become 12 in his
second advertisement. We exhibit 13, which are those that
have reached us and make us assume they were part of that
same collection sold by the author, since they have many fea-
tures in common in terms of format, medium and theme.

The theme linking all 13 pieces is the town of Portalegre,
most of them being wide angle shots in which the environ-
ment is of primary concern. Objectively the area of the pho-
tograph is filled by the environment, with a small part of this
space being left for the subject which also helps create its scale.
Their descriptive value lies in the importance accorded to the
subject’s geographical location, and their dramatic value lies
in the envelopment, or overwhelming, of the subject by the
environment.
It was 1888, and in those times photography, as yet a
very recent technology, was relatively painful in regard to
what it is today. Besides the laboratory procedures, requir-
ing a vast knowledge of chemicals, the very heavy cam-
era equipment, requiring complex handling, did not allow
for great mobility. Hence, studio photography was far more
widespread than exteriors. Around that time and for this rea-
son, there were few photographs of towns, monuments and
landscapes, in contradistinction to photographs of persons
in studied poses, usually against a painted studio backdrop.
However, Paino Perez, a much travelled man, was willing to
capture and record the most interesting features he encoun-
tered on his travels. Additionally, his professional compe-
tence was surprisingly advanced for his time, given that he
offered to reproduce other photographs, documents, maps

cados estrategicamente no ambiente, o palco, e a representar
editores portalegrenses – Anselmo Augusto Oliveira e Antó-
and works of art, all of which we sense as being very complex
in view of the resources available at the time.
Only three of the thirteen photographs do not include
the human figure, being simply descriptions of the land-
marks. The other ten display what appears to be rather more
a staging of numerous actors strategically placed in the envi-
ronment, the stage, each performing his or her part. Very few
persons appear to be there by accident, only the lookers-on
almost on their way out of the frame, or persons going about
their business far from the lens.
The themes are those of the most representative features
of the Portalegre of the time, genuine clichés which probably
influenced many a postcard producer who would later return
to the same scenarios, from the same viewpoints.
The three photographs without persons were taken
from a high vantage point. Two of them are actually a
sequence, with the camera placed on the same spot – the
Belvedere of St. Christopher – and trained on two adjoin-
ing angles. The idea was in all likelihood to compose a
panoramic view with two photos placed sequentially, but
the technology for this was still embryonic. It was only a
few years later, in the early 1900s, that two Portalegran
publishers – Anselmo Augusto Oliveira e António Afonso
Franco - published the first panoramic views of Portale-
gre in postcard form.
These two photos (nos. 1 and 2) present the most strik-
ing visual features of Portalegre seen from the mountains,
lazily unrolling in the valley below: the Cathedral, the Castle,
the Yellow Palace and Penha Mountains, rising up from the
vast plain stretching out as far as the horizon. Generations of
professional and amateur photographers have over time pho-
tographed Portalegre from this same spot, this being argua-
bly the most photogenic view of the town.

Desde logo espaciais: as 11 perso-
A outra informação óbvia
Paino Perez salientou a
e plebeus (à direita) no terço central do plano (as composições
The other (no. 3) depicts Penha Mount, probably taken
from one of the Castle turrets, from a spot where the Mount
can be seen as a perfect triangle, thrusting its little chapel to the
heavens, an image which always gives visitors a strange mysti-
cal and spiritual feeling, tinged with the ancient fear of volca-
noes. Strange, deserted, symmetrical, it is almost a silhouette
in its monotony, were it not for the presence of the chapel.
In any one of these wide angle landscapes, Paino Perez
did not include any human figures, surely due to the physical
impossibility of placing them in wide angle shots. The same
was not the case of the other inclusive wide angle shots of
Portalegre taken from Penha Mount (no. 4), near the chapel
(now also become a cliché), in which he placed 12 figures stra-
tegically, of whom 5 adults and 7 children, posing theatri-
cally so as to convey several items of information. To begin
with, the spatial: the 11 characters foregrounded provide a
good sense of the depth and scale of the landscape framed;
the other element in the middle ground, seated at the foot of
the Cross, helps viewers’ perceptions of scale besides contrib-
uting to that same reading of depth. The other, obvious item
is ethnographic: eleven characters forming five groups, of dif-
ferent ages and diversified clothing, are enough to impart a
great deal of information.
This photograph is now in a particularly damaged condi-
tion, requiring intense restoration work.
The remaining nine photographs are more or less fore-
grounded, depending on the dominant subject-matter.
Corro (no. 5), now Praça da República, has always been
one of Portalegre’s landmarks. Paino Perez highlighted Porta
de Alegrete, rigorously centred in the photograph (vanishing
point) and he framed the imposing buildings (to the left) and
the plebeian buildings (to the right) in the third central shot
(Perez’s compositions almost always follow the rule of thirds

do Liceu (inaugurado quatro anos antes).
Parece haver
– the golden rule of composition). Penha Mount is the out-
line of the skyscape in the background, and the inner part, the
“filling”, is made up of the characters in different planes and
variations of depth. Most of them are students in academic
dress, not surprisingly since the secondary school was close
by (it had been opened four years previously). Some of them
(with emphasis on the main, central figure leaning against a
low post) are engrossed in reading their books, underscoring
their status and their obligations. Also to be seen are some
military men from the 22 Infantry Barracks, duly standing to
attention, besides whom there are some yokels wearing their
characteristic caps and wide-brimmed hats. Attention should
be drawn to the fountain located in front of the Civil Govern-
ment building, to the framing of Porta de Alegrete. This foun-
tain has not been on this site for many years. We believe it
is the one now to be found in Rua da Misericórdia, because,
once the photograph is blown up, a remarkable resemblance
can be noted. True, this fountain now bears the date 1906,
but it was not unusual in Portalegre for fountains to be moved
about, with new dates, those of the relocation, possibly being
inscribed. This is what happened to the fountain in Rossio,
which was sited in 1865 near the Church of St. James and in
1889 travelled to the site it now occupies, which eventually
named it. Not to mention the recent relocation of several of
the town’s fountains or the Philippine Fountain, currently
residing in Cascais.
Speaking of fountains, this is also the theme of another
outstanding photograph of Corredoura in the exhibition (no.
6), which, besides the fountain (the now long gone “Fountain
of do Cano da Corredoura de Baixo”), also includes the church
of Calvário, the Convent of St. Bernard (at the time, the Sem-
inary) and 14 human figures, among whom the street lamp
lighter and his assistant, caught in the act of lighting.
26
tido lavar a roupa.
son).
This photograph almost amounts to photojournalism,
precisely because it includes the act of lighting the lamp. The
photographer’s intention appears to have been the document-
ing of this action, to the extent of waiting for the lamp lighter
to climb the ladder and carry out his activity. What is perhaps
more likely is that the photographer asked the man to freeze
his motion until he could depress the obturator (the contents
beside the assistant must have been kerosene, the substance
then used for street lighting). Besides these “Town Hall work-
ers” of days gone by, the characters are again students, yokels,
children and washer-women; there was a tank for public use
where clothes washing was allowed.
Another photograph in this collection also depicts the
Convent of St. Bernard (the Seminary) and the Church of
Calvário (no. 7) but seen from Corredoura de cima (now the
George Robinson Avenue). The photographer’s positioning of
five persons in the lower right hand corner in a frozen pose,
some foregrounded, others further back, is surely intended to
convey the perspective depth.
This collection comprises two photographs of Rossio
(Rocio do Espírito Santo, as it was then known): both have a
large number of characters and a feature which is common to
both – the plane-tree. In one of them (no. 8) – the shot facing
Rua de Santo André, with the tree at the still tender age of 40
years but already sufficiently large to stand as a central feature
– the viewer can see to the right a wall and a gateway of what
would have been the boundaries of the Public Gardens. As for
the by-standers, arranged at different angles, these represent
the various societal strata and the different occupations. From
the errand boy with a basket at his feet, to the students in aca-
demic garb, through what appears to be a postman (the fourth
figure on the right), policemen, town dwellers in their bowler
hats and capes, yokels in their caps or wide-brimmed hats,
27
tano. A Sé e o Palácio Amarelo à direita, as torres do Castelo
Alentejan capes, and children. The only woman appears to be
there by accident, out of tune with the composition.
The other photograph of Rossio (no. 9) is much more
interesting. Besides once again positioning the plane-tree cen-
trally (the photo was taken two or three months after the first,
since the tree already bears small leaves), several of the town’s
landmarks can be glimpsed behind the tree. To the right, the
Cathedral and the Yellow Palace, to the left, the Castle turrets
and the Church of St Lawrence. Yet again this photo seems to
be a piece of journalism on an event, since it captures a mil-
itary formation (possibly the 22 Infantry), duly in place and
standing to attention. Behind the soldiers, there are many by-
standers, practically all of them looking into the photogra-
pher’s lens, which suggests that for them Paino Perez’s camera
was of greater importance than the military parade.
This photo should show, standing behind the tree, Ros-
sio fountain, as it bears the date 1865, but it is not there,
since it was only transferred to the spot where it now stands a
year after this photo was taken, as already explained.
Somewhat strange is what we would call the photograph
which, taken from the back of the Church of Calvário and fac-
ing the mountain of St. Mamede, has St. Anthony’s Convent
as its central motif (no. 10). The Convent is too far away to be
the central feature and the row of houses in Fontedeira, which
visually divides the photograph in two, is of little interest as a
theme; we assume it was not why the photo was taken. In the
end, the central feature is a boy perched up on a tree, being
observed by another boy sitting on a wall, with a third ele-
ment, this time a man. This trio has in common the way each
figure wears his hat – set back on the head – and by the line of
their gaze: they are observing something that is going on to
the right of the camera. As a photograph it is the least inter-
esting of the collection.

Espírito Santo passarem a segundo plano.
as fotografias aparece a compor o Largo fronteiro à Misericór-
dia.
(ver fotos n.º 8, 9, 11, 12 e 13).
diversos “actores” a representar diversos “papéis”. As perso-
Do
The “Civilian Hospital” is the central theme of one of the
exhibits (no. 11), a Baroque building which must have caught
Paino Perez’s eye, with Calvary Church in the distance and the
Church of the Holy Ghost becoming secondary in the compo-
sition. The latter would actually be slightly nipped in the pho-
tograph, undeservedly so, as it just happened to be the oldest
church in Portalegre (fourteenth century). For Portalegrans it is
odd to see this site as yet lacking the monument to those fallen
in the Great War, which now appears in every photograph,
lending a feature to the Square fronting. the Misericórdia. Once
again, some characters people the scene, always duly placed in
sunlit areas. In the photos of this series, whenever a shadow
is clearly cast in the foreground of the composition, that is the
viewing point, ie. that is where the camera stood. Human fig-
ures are always beyond the shadows, duly lit up, as per good
technical procedure (see photos nos. 8, 9, 11, 12 and 13).
The view of Santana Square (no. 12) is a perfect stage,
whose scenery comprises a background dwarfed by the
imposing mass of the Cathedral, surrounded by houses, with
several “actors” playing several “roles”. The lead players, two
military men standing a little to the right, are engrossed in
their reading – for the camera, of course – with other charac-
ters (students, soldiers and townspeople) in different studied
poses by the wall or sitting on it.
For us, the true relic in this photo can be found to the right,
approximately along the central line of the composition. It is
the only photograph we know of which shows the Church of
St. Peter, long gone now, and which is said to have stood on the
site of what is now the old Sanatorium and the Health Centre.
To conclude, a delightful photograph (no. 13) for the
information it conveys and which may be of interest in several
areas. From the point of view of the town’s urban evolution,
it is interesting to see the initial state of the Robinson Fac-
33
tory, the Jardim Operário Gardens, the 22 Infantry Barracks.
Or the isolated situation of the Church of St. Christopher at
the very top and the absence of the handsome mansion the
Robinson Family later had built to house its day-care cen-
tre for workers’ children, now occupied by Caritas. From the
anthropological and ethnographic point of view, there is much
to be discovered in the more than sixty characters, who, lined
up, standing to attention and mute, made of Paino Perez’s
lens the most important feature of their lives at that precise
moment, seeming to divine that, on the other side, more than
120 years later, many other eyes would gaze at them as well, as
if they were familiar and old acquaintances.
The photographs of Paino Perez are veritable windows
of time4.

1 Invented by Desiré Blanquart in 1850, albumen printing was the most widely
used until the end of the 1880s. It derives its name from its use of egg white
which had previously been salted and whipped until stiff and used as an agglu-
tinating medium for the silver salts that formed the image.

no suporte.
e interesses. A exposição destas fotografias em
grande formato mostra, com impacto e deslum-
bramento, uma cidade diferente, mas estranha-
mente familiar.

Portalegre 1888.The photographs of Paino Perez
On his travels through several Portuguese towns,
Paino Perez, the Spanish photographer with a
studio in Viseu, settled in Portalegre for about
6 months, in the distant year of 1888. Here he con-
ducted his professional activity. A collection of his
photographs have reached us in our time, having
as their theme the town of Portalegre. According
to research into the newspapers of his day, he sold
and displayed his work in local shop windows. The
collection is consistent in its themes, format and
medium. Portalegre is observed in its most rep-
resentative clichés, to which future generations
of photographers and picture post card publish-
ers would always return. They embody an excel-
lent window into time, where viewers can acquaint
themselves with the town and inhabitants of yore,
depending on different features and interests. The
exhibition of these photographs in enlarged format
shows – with impact and delight – a town which is
different, yet strangely familiar.
