How Magic Has Changed

The Art of Magic has always changed through outhistory! IF any of you have read the Vernon biographyof Dai Vernon, Volume 1, brilliantly written by DavidBen, you well know how far magic has come in the last100 years. Even with that, magic and it�s growth hasalways seen �peaks and valleys� in past years. IF youare old enough to remember, magic was hot in the1950�s...mainly because of Mark & Nani Wilson�s;�Magic Land of Alakazam� series on national television!After the Magic Land of Alakazam, magic gained inpopularity! More of the public got interested in the�magic world�.

In the 1970�s there was one magician who, again,ignited the popularity of magic and his name was;Doug Henning! He started a revolution in the art thatran up until around the 1990�s. In that time frame, stageand parlor magic were THE popular venues! Close-upmagic was not as popular back then as it is today. Also,there were nothing to compare with street magic asthere is today.

How this has changed in today�s magic world! Theinterest is now on close up magic, street magic, comedyclub magic.

Stage and parlor magic has taken a �back seat� to thenew aficionados popularity, you don�t see many magicacts on TV today! (Not even David Copperfield).What you do see is; �in your face magic, with cards,coins, unusual items and video-edited magic routines!

With the finality of the famous Siegfried and Roy�s showin Las Vegas, even hotel magic acts have almostvanished! Vegas is not the �Hot Bed� it once was formagic acts!

Yes, David Copperfield is still at the MGM, but LanceBurton (for now) has retired and David and Criss Angelare the ONLY big names playing Vegas.

So, where is the art going? I would say that even thoughwe may be in a valley at present, there are still MOREpeople involved in magic now than ever and that isgood! Every day, you can see on the Internet fantasticeffects created by excellent minds from people you havenever heard of! The Internet has created more interestin the art and the growth of �wannabe�s� is higher thanever!

The one caveat from the Internet is that even thoughmore people are getting their magic desires filled byInternet access, they are truly missing some of the�golden� visits to the old time �Brick n Mortar� magicshops. Interested people now get their �magic fix� onthe Internet and do not need magic shops nor magicconventions to get the fix.

This will NOT change and is a way of the future. Goodor bad, (it is up to you, depending on your preference).

I, for one, will always treasure those high anticipatedfeelings of going to a magic shop, conventions, localmeetings, as the thrill cannot be compared to any thrillone gets on the Internet! Those days are gone or almostgone, and I�m thankful for growing up with theanticipation of seeing the Great Harry Blackstone inthe 1940�s as well as the Siegfried and Roy shows ofrecent times, as well as being able to attend thosefantastic conventions as well as the famous DesertMagic Seminars, where Slydini, Dai Vernon,Siegfried and Roy led all of us to unforgettablememories! Thanks, to all of you, for contributing to mymemories.
