  It was just one year ago that the City was bracing for a sig‐nificant  flood  event.    Last 

February,  the National Weather  Service warn‐ing were pretty extreme, signaling the potential for a major  flood.   Thankfully, due  to  the hard work  of many,  the  community  was  prepared and  the weather worked  in our  favor  to avoid major damages.   This year,  the National Weather Service pre‐dictions  are  much  different.    Delano  is  fore‐casted with less than a 20% chance of reaching major flood levels.  While this is good news for all  those  impacted by  flooding,  it  is  important not to put the possibility out of our minds.   The City continues to take steps and precau‐tions  to  improve  its  infrastructure  and  flood readiness.    Discussions  and  preliminary  plan‐ning  are  underway  for  a  more  permanent downtown  flood  wall  and  the  City  is  seeking grant  funds  for  lift  stations  to  help  in  flood events.   Likewise,  community  members  should  also use  this  spring  as  a  reminder of  the  potential that exists with the river  in town and stay pre‐pared.  If this spring gives the City a break from flooding, use  it  as  an opportunity  to plan  and prepare for a future event.

Delano:  Heart Safe Community 

 

  The goal of a heart safe community is to make the community a safer place to live, work and play by being prepared to reduce the number of deaths and disabilities associated with Sudden Cardiac Arrest.   With  this program, Delano  can  strengthen what  the American Heart Association has called the “Chain of Survival” which has four basic links:  Early Access:  Calling 911  Early  CPR:    Encouraging wide  spread bystander CPR  training  to  in‐crease immediate action. 

Early Defibrillation:   AEDs in public locations and individuals trained to use them. 

Early Advanced Care:   The quick arrival of ALS Ambulance service to continue care. 

 

  Wright County  squad  cars  and Delano  Fire  trucks  are  equipped with AEDs.  In addition to these emergency vehicles, there are 14 AEDs readily available  in  businesses  and  residences  throughout  Delano.    A map  of these locations can be accessed on the Delano City Website.   For more information about Delano Heart Safe Community or purchas‐ing an AED for your business or residence, visit the City website and click on the community tab followed by the Heart Safe Link.   Sudden Cardiac Arrest  is  the number one killer  in  the nation where ordinary citizens have the greatest impact.  Know where Delano’s AEDs are located, how to use them and save a life!

In June of 2011, Delano became a Heart  Safe  Community  through Allina Hospitals and Clinic’s Heart Safe Communities Program.

AARP Tax‐Aide Available at Delano Senior Center   AARP Tax‐Aide  is a free tax preparation service available for seniors and low income individuals at Delano Senior Center on Wednesdays  and  Thursdays beginning  February  1  ‐  April  12.  IRS certified Tax Aide volunteer counselors will be available by appointment  from 9 AM  ‐ 12 Noon to assist you with federal and  state  income  tax and  state property/rent  credit prepara‐tion.  Call the Delano Senior Center at 763‐972‐0574 to sched‐ule an appointment.  Rental refunds can be done starting Feb. 1, Property Tax refunds after March 15.   Items to bring along to your appointment:

Senior Center Works to Reduce Falls in Older Adults   Stepping On  is a workshop offered  in Delano  in partnership with  Buffalo Hospital.    The workshop  helps  older  adults  pre‐vent falls.  The workshop  is from 12:45 PM ‐ 2:45 PM, once a week, March 1  ‐ April 12, 2012 at  the Delano Senior Center.  Please  call Allina Buffalo Hospital  at  763‐684‐7025 or Delano Senior Center to register for the workshop.     Stepping On will help participants  identify why they fall and different ways  to prevent  falls,  including strength and balanc‐ing exercises, home safety check suggestions and a medication review.   Research shows that people who complete the work‐shop have a 31% reduced rate of falls.     For more information contact the Delano Senior Center. 

Senior Center to host night on Broadway   Dining  and  entertainment  are  on  hand  at  the  Delano  Senior Center March 17  fundraiser.  “Come to the Cabaret” will feature local singers performing Broadway show tunes.  A wide selection of popular music, from “Hello Dolly” to “76 Trombones” will ap‐peal to guests of all ages.   The menu will  feature  swinging  spring  salad,  Broadway  beef tips, and applause dessert.  Tickets for adults are $18.00; $10.00 for children under 12.  Dinner seating is at 6:00 PM, show time is 7:30 PM.   Cabaret  entertainment  has  a  special  place  on  the  American entertainment scene.  The sponsors and performers of “Come to the Cabaret” promise a professional quality showmanship.   Tick‐ets are available at the Delano Senior Center. 

Movie Club   The  Senior  Center will  be  introducing  a  new  opportunity  for area citizens, a Movie Club.   Similar  to a book club, participants will watch movies and discuss them.   The  initial focus will be on this year’s Academy Award Ten Best Picture Nominees, but other movies  can be  added  as members desire.   The  first meeting of the movie club was held at 1:00 PM on February 2nd at the Sen‐ior Center Activity Room.  Movies will be shown on Thursday on a weekly basis at the Center with occasional outings to a movie theatre.  Participants will  review  the  list  of  best movies  of  last year and establish a schedule for viewing.  Interested persons can join  by  calling  the Delano  Senior  Center  or  just  drop  in  to  see what this is all about!
