By Melissa LoBefore I share my experiences as a volunteer in the Chinese

Victims of Crime Support Group, I would like to share a random encounter I have experienced. It had left a strong impression on me.

You may not have experienced it personally, but you may have heard of a similar incident from your friends and family.

It was on a nice sunny afternoon and I was travelling on a certain New South Wales railway line. My friend and I were seated in the front left corner of the carriage. An Asian female was seated in the front right corner of the carriage, and a buff Caucasian male stood in the walkway.

My friend and I were engaged in a delightful conversation, whilst the Asian female was playing with her iPad. Suddenly there was a loud thump sound, which frightened my friend and I. When we came to, we noticed that the buff Caucasian male and the Asian females iPad had vanished!

We believe the male had quickly taken the females iPad and fl ed the train carriage just as the carriage doors were closing. Surprisingly, not one passenger travelling in the carriage offered the female any help, or kind and caring words in light of the incident that had just unfolded on the train.

The silence that followed was frustrating. Not one person offered any assistance to her myself included. I will never forget the expressions passing on her face of anger, frustration, and fi nally, despair.

I did not approach her; neither did anyone on the train. The rest of the train ride was uneventful, and she fi nally departed.

Why did no one show her any compassion? Perhaps I was

still shocked by the incident; or my Chinese upbringing instilled in me a sense of only looking after oneself, I did not step up to the occasion and assist her.

I endured a sleepless night after the incident thinking about what had happened. Was she desperate for the return of her iPad? I think what she really needed was the genuine concern and comfort from a stranger in the situation.

Where should she seek help? Should she have reported the incident to the Police? I thought about how no one came to her assistance. I thought about how she may not know where and from whom she can receive assistance from. This incident may possibly leave a devastating impact on her mental state. She may experience constant fl ashbacks, paranoia, become untrusting and feel insecure in the community.

This experience made me realised that:- 1. Crime may be committed at any place, any time, and

therefore, we must remain alert and aware of our surroundings; and,

2. We should offer our assistance to people in need, even if it is only a simple gesture or kind words.

In my recent experience as a volunteer in the Chinese Victims of Crime Support Group (CVCSG) for the past four months, I have achieved great satisfaction and self-fulfi lment. Although I have not been involved in many cases, I have thoroughly enjoyed being a volunteer in CVCSG. The simple thank you or smile you received when helping someone in need brings happiness and joy that which you cannot describe or buy.
