The Weekly Parsha

Sedrah Selections — Selections

by Zvi Akiva Fleisher

Ch. 12, v. 2: “V’yoldoh zochor v’tomoh” — The Holy Admor of Kotzk explains the cause of defilement after giving birth with the gemara Taanis 2a. The gemara says that although Hashem gives out keys (sends out intermediaries) for many functions, there are three keys which He does not relinquish, but rather He personally intervenes in carrying out these three functions. They are the keys for rainfall, the resurrection of the dead, and birth. This explains the words in Breishis 30:22, “Va’yiftach HASHEM es rachmoh.” Since Hashem’s Holy Presence is in attendance at every birth, upon leaving, there is such a void of sanctity that it brings about defilement. This is similar to the defilement caused by a dead body, which is caused by the departure of the sanctity of a Jewish soul.

Ch. 13, v. 2: “B’or b’soro” — Why doesn’t the verse simply say “b’oro” since the tzoraas affliction is on the surface of the skin? The Oznayim laTorah gives us three answers:

1) To teach us that although the affliction is only skin-deep it is not to be taken lightly, but should be considered a deep malady, as if it infected the flesh as well.

2) To indicate that there is a difference in the laws of tzoraas, depending on whether it appears on an open flesh area or a hairy area.

3) To indicate that the sin of the flesh (immorality) is a cause of the tzoraas.

The gemara Arochin 16a says: R’ Yochonon says that there are seven causes for tzoraas:

1) Loshon hora. (Note the similarity of the words “motzi shem ra” and metzoroh.)

2) Murder. 3) Swearing in vain. 4) Sexual immorality. 5) Haughtiness. 6) Theft. 7) Stinginess. (Note the similarity of the

words “tzaar ayin” and tzoraas.) Rabbeinu Bachyei says that this last cause

is indicated in the verse (14:35) which says, “asher lo habayis.” The house is his, but not for the use of anyone else.

Ch. 13, v. 33: “V’his*G*aloch” — This is the 33rd verse in the verses dealing with tzoraas. This alludes to the cutting of hair on the 33rd day of the S’firas Ho’omer (O.Ch. #493:2). The large letter Gimmel alludes to the three days of “hagboloh,” when it is permitted to cut one’s hair. “V’hisGaloch” is numerically equal to “L”G yomim bo’omer”

(with the kolel), which is 452. Tof-Nun-Beis equals 452, which stands for “Tista’peir B’erev Nun, Cut your hair on the eve of the fiftieth day,” which is Shvuos. This is the custom of the Ari z”l. (Pardes Yosef)

Ch. 15, v. 13: “V’chi yit’har hazov mizovo v’sofar lo” — Rabbi Gershon Chanoch He-noch Leiner, the Holy Admor of Radzin, notes that this verse and the next two verses contain 49 words, corresponding to the 49 days of purification the bnei Yisroel experienced in preparation for receiving the Torah. This is indicated by the words “V’chi yit’har ... v’sofar lo,” — and he should count, alluding to the 49 days of S’firas Ho’omer. He adds that the 33rd word is “mo’eid,” alluding to the special status of Lag Bo’omer, the 33rd day of the Omer counting.

The Pardes Yoseif adds that the 29th word, which corresponds to the 29th day of S’firas Ho’omer, which is always Pesach Sheini, is “Hashem.” The word “Hashem” alludes to the words of Moshe when he told those who inquired of him if they have the possibility of taking part in the Paschal sacrifice even though they were defiled, “Imdu v’esh’m’oh mah y’da’beir HASHEM.” The word “Hashem” appears in the phrase “u’vo lifnei Hashem el pesach ohel mo’eid,” — to the OPENING of the tent of assembly. The Holy Zohar writes that “the gates to Hashem are OPEN from Pesach Sheini onwards.”

Ahavas Yisroel Jewish Women’s Project

The AY Project is what “women can do” in response to the darkness of our times to unite Klal Yisroel. Twenty minutes a week gives neighbors a chance to meet, shmooze and grow within the inspirational and fun sessions.

To locate a group, form a group on your block, or add your existing group to our current chabura list, contact Meira Blaxberg.

Groups in close proximity to TY are Shabbos 5:30 pm at Chani Caplan’s, Monday 2:30 pm at Sara Silverberg’s, Wednesday 8:15 pm at Rina Miriam Bethea’s and Wednesday 9 pm at Sara Weingot’s.

Focus on Tanach Our Focus on Tanach year is halfway over.

So far, 53 families are participating in study-ing Tanach. Two joined just last week. We’re looking for 100% participation. Join us. You’re probably doing it already, so just add your name to the list. If not, all we’re asking for is one parsha. You can do that on your lunch break.

We still need takers for Vayishlach, Vayeishev, Vayigash and Mishpatim.

Camp Shabbos Camp Shabbos offers parents of young

children up to age 7 the opportunity to take part in shul while their children enjoy supervised play.

To help keep it going, we need volunteers to rotate the responsibility of being the point person for each session.

To volunteer, contact Adriana Steinberg, [email protected] or 202-641-6677.

Yahrzeits Giving tzedakah in the name of the

departed has the power to elevate their soul. When you give charity on behalf of your loved one, consider giving to Tiferes Yisroel.

And may the soul of your loved one be bound in the bond of life, together with the souls of Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov; Sarah, Rivka, Rachel and Leah; and together with the other righteous men and women in Gan Eden.

Pushka Challenge

The challenge is to deposit 36 cents into your shul pushka every day (it could be more or less, the challenge is to give something every day). When your pushka is full, drop off the money (in a bag, marked with your name) in Shlomo Goldberger’s mailbox.

Call Shlomo and Ahuva if you would like them to pick up a pushka or if you need a pushka.

Our goal is to bring in $10,000 by next Rosh Hashanah. To join the chal-lenge and the other members who have already signed up, contact the Goldbergers at 410-358-4456 or [email protected].

Focus on Tanach The idea is to complete all of Tanach, as a community, with each family or individual learning a book from Tanach or a

Parsha from the Torah. There can be overlap, as long as we finish Tanach as a shul. Sign up with Shaina Margolese at [email protected] or 410-358-7387. Rabbi Goldberger would very much like the Torah parshiyos to be completed by the youth of our shul. Sign up with
