Some time in the middle of the 1960s, ELGi found that there was a requirement for compressors in the railways. This was the first involvement that ELGi had with the railways in what was to become an important, ongoing relationship.

Compressors find various uses in trains and locomotives. They are used to operate the brakes that stop them. A number of devices in locomotives such as horns and wipers may be operated pneumatically. When they are pneumatic, there is a requirement of compressed air.

The first product that ELGi supplied for railway applications was a small (1 horsepower) compressor driven by a battery operated DC motor. This compressor was known as the ICRC. The compressed air produced by the compressor raised pantographs in electric locomotives. When not in use, a pantograph is folded down. The pantograph makes contact with the overhead electric wire. ELGi developed a compressor for this application around 1968.

The entry into the railways market led rapidly to the development of more compressors and other products for the same customer. ELGi was soon developing and supplying compressors such as the TRC 1000 and TRC 1500 for braking and pneumatic applications. Before long, ELGi was the leading supplier of compressors for the Railways. Today, ELGi provides variety of compressors for Electrical Locomotives, Diesel Locomotives, Auxillary Compressors, Exhausters, Wind Screen Wipers and Water Raising Apparatus.
