Monsoon Watch

♦  The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM)  continues to pass through Lat. 21°N / Long. 60°E, Lat.21°N / Long. 65°E, Veraval, Surat, Nasik, Wasim, Damoh, Lucknow,  Aligarh, Bikaner and Lat. 28°N / Long. 72°E.

♦  Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh and some more parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh during next 3 days.

Main Weather Observations

♦  Rainfall: (From 0830 to 1730 hours IST of today): Rain/thundershowers has occurred at many places over West Bengal & Sikkim, Jharkhand, Bihar, Konkan & Goa and coastal Karnataka; at a few places over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, east Uttar Pradesh and Kerala and at isolated places over Chhattisgarh and north interior Karnataka. Weather remained mainly dry/dry over rest of the country. The amounts of rainfall (2 cm or more) recorded at 1730 hours IST of today are:  Shimla­4; Alibag and Harnai­3 each; Karwar, Canning, Varanasi and Patna­2 each.

♦   Temperature:  Heatwave conditions are prevailing  at  a   few places over  coastal  Andhra Pradesh.  Maximum temperature  of  40.0°C or  more  are   recorded  at:  Machilipatnam­41.4;  Tuni­40.9;  Bhaunagar­40.7;  Ongole­40.6; Sheopur, Wardha, Kota and Tiruchchirapalli­40.0 each.

Maximum temperatures are above normal by 5­6°C at a few places over west Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha;  isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh; by 2­4°C at a few places over Gujarat region, Assam & Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, rest Madhya Pradesh and rest Andhra Pradesh.  They are below normal by 2­4°C at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir, Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal and near normal over rest parts of the country.

 Kalpana­1: Cloud imagery of 1730 hours IST shows convective clouds over parts of♦   northeastern states, east and adjoining   central   India,   Uttar   Pradesh,  south   Maharashtra,   north   Karnataka,   north   Andhra   Pradesh,   north   & southeast Bay of Bengal, Andaman sea and eastcentral Arabian sea.  Low/medium clouds are seen over rest parts of the country outside Punjab, west Haryana, west Rajasthan and Gujarat State.

Meteorological Analysis       (based on 1730 hours IST)   

 The low pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand now lies over northeast Jharkhand♦  and  neighbourhood with associated upper air cyclonic circulation extending upto 7.6 km above mean sea level. It would move northwestwards during next 24 hours.

 The trough at mean sea level from Punjab to north Bay of Bengal across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and♦  centre of low pressure area persists.

 The western disturbance as an upper cyclonic circulation over Jammu & Kashmir and neighbourhood extending♦  upto 3.1 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft persist. It would move east­northeastwards during next 24 hours.

♦   The upper air cyclonic circulation over west Uttar Pradesh & neighbourhood extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level persists. It may become less marked during next 24 hours.

♦  The off shore trough from Maharashtra coast to south Karnataka coast at mean sea level persist.
