    TRAINING CD MANUAL

    INTRODUCTION

Tom Clancys Rainbow Six: CovertOperations Essentials guides you throughthe world of counter-terrorism as only TomClancy and Red Storm Entertainment could. In Covert Operations, you are a successful member of RAINBOW, a covert inter-national counter-terrorist team set up tocombat terrorism and anarchy worldwide. With your proven record, you have earned achance to enter Officer Candidate School(OCS) to become a Commanding Officer ofRAINBOW. The Training CD provides allresources needed to begin studying andtesting for this role.

Achieving Commanding Officer status of theworld's most secret and effective counter-terrorist organisation isnt exactly easy. Youface gruelling tests in seven different areasof Covert Operations: CT Forces, HistoricalOperations, Gear, Tactics, Intel, Psych andFuture. Successful completion of all tests ina topic yields a medal. Seven medals yield arank of Commander. Your success relies onhow well you study the topics foundthroughout the Training CD.

Even the most highly trained operativeneeds constant review and study. Youshould take time to review the articles foundin the Core Navigation Interface (CNI)before jumping into the OCS testing. The Covert Operations Training CDprovides all necessary information toprepare you for the tests at hand. Afterstudying the articles in a selected topic, move on to the testing section to begin theCompetency Review Exam (CRE) for thetopic.

There are no official constraints barring acandidate from jumping into the fieldscenarios on the missions CD without firstreviewing the training CD. However, this isoften not the best decision. Failure to adhereto fundamental counter-terrorist practicescan lead to mission failure rather quickly. You gained this opportunity by exhibitingsound judgment and exemplaryperformance

You must first attempt amission in a Single Player Campaign tounlock it in the Custom Mission Menu.

    GAME TYPES

Assault This mission type is similar tonormal single player and multiplayer assaultmissions, but there are no hostages to save.Your primary objective is to seek andneutralise all terrorists in the area using anymeans necessary.

Lone Wolf The main objective of thesemissions is survival. You begin each LoneWolf mission from the insertion point as asolo RAINBOW operative. It is your missionto survive through the level to the extractionzone. With this type, you have the option ofplacing 1 to 50 terrorists in a level.

Terrorist Hunt Unlike Lone Wolf, you haveteammates to aide you in tracking downeach terrorist throughout the level. There isno extraction zone; you must neutralise allterrorists to complete the mission. You canchange the number of terrorists in eachmission with this game type.

Hostage Rescue For Hostage Rescue, you must equip and plan a team ofoperatives to find civilian hostages andensure their safety. You complete thesemissions by either returning them safely tothe extraction point, or neutralising allterrorists. For this type of mission, it isusually best to stay stealthy and silent untilyou have secured the hostages. Otherwise,if the terrorists hear gunfire, they mayexecute the hostages before your operativescan get to them.

Defend With Defend missions, it is up toyou to defend your base against waves ofadvancing enemy. In Defend missions, theterrorists seek to activate a switch found inyour base. You must select a singleoperative to defend an area and preventterrorists from activating a switch near theInsertion Zone. Terrorists come at you fromall sides and can even throw grenades atyou. Once the area near the switch issecure, you must neutralise all remainingterrorists on the map to complete themission. Defend missions are onlyavailable for Single Player levels. Recruit Terrorist skill sets are lower in thisdifficulty. This means they are slower to fire, they have a slower reaction time, they haveless tenacity overall, etc. This is a gooddifficulty level for beginners.

Veteran As you skills improve, you mightwant to try this level. Veteran level Terroristshave good skills. They target quickly and arevery accurate. The Veteran difficulty levelalso adds objectives to some missions insingle player and cooperative (not in custommissions).

Elite This difficulty is not for the weak oruntrained. Elite level Terrorists are fast, highly skilled, and hungry. They areextremely aware of their surroundings andfire at anything that moves. In Elite difficulty, you do not have the comfort of Auto-targeting - so dont try to turn it on. Also, using your Heartbeat Sensor only results ina blip on your mini-map. Auto-Targeting On - Activated by default.During the Action Phase, the targetingreticule automatically centres itself directlyto the targets head. This makes targeting aterrorist easier and eliminates the timenecessary to line up a perfect shot. Onceyou become more proficient with thecontrols, deactivate this option for more of achallenge.

Blood When activated, terrorists and othercharacters will bleed when shot and therecan be occasional blood spray. The effect isrealistic and not overly gory like you mightexpect in other games. When deactivated, characters just fall down without any visiblewounds and disappear - like in the oldWestern movies.

GRAPHICSThese options not only affect how the gamelooks on your monitor, but also how fast thegame plays on slower computers. If youhave a supported hardware 3D accelerator,Covert Operations automatically takesadvantage of it.

Force Software This setting is extremelyimportant for users without a supported 3Dcard.

Important! If youre having difficulties getting into the Action Phase, or if you areexperiencing freezes or other graphicalproblems, first try turning the Force Softwareoption on. If the game starts, even if the graphicsare poor and the speed is very slow, then theremay be a problem with your video card. Read thereadme file or visithttp://www.redstorm.com/support for helptroubleshooting the problem.

Video Resolution This allows you to setthe resolution of the action phase. Not allresolutions will work on all computers.Performance may be slower at higherresolutions for certain system configurations. If you experience problems at higherresolutions, lower this setting to 640x480 orsmaller. While certain video cards allow veryhigh resolutions, setting the in-gameresolution higher than 800x600 is notrecommended for most systems.

Detail Level This option automatically setsseveral advanced options to specific defaultlevels. These options affect the performanceof Covert Operations on your machine. If youhave a slower machine, try setting the detaillevel to low. This will degrade visual qualitywhile increasing performance. If you have a

powerful machine, you may want to set thedetail level to high, which will increase visualquality, but may slow down the performanceof Covert Operations on your system. Thissetting defaults to medium. For moreinformation on what graphics options are set,and how they will affect the game, see thesection on Advanced Options.

Use Action Gamma This option allowsyou to use gamma correction to brighten upthe apparent light level of the action phase. This option does not affect how well AIs inthe game can see, only how bright it appearson your monitor. Show Weather FX will toggle the rainand snow visible effects for the level. It willnot affect the sounds associated with theseeffects. Also, in a multiplayer game, a servercan override the disabling of these options.Removing these options may speed theperformance of the game on your machine.

MIP Skip - This option affects the LOD fortextures, such as floor coverings, wallcoverings, etc. Many textures have severaldifferent levels of detail. By activating thisoption, Covert Operations does not use all ofthe levels of detail for some textures, and sowill not swap them in and out as often. Thismeans that the overall visual qualitydecreases while performance may increase.

    PLANNING PHASE

    Planning Phase Plan Map

    OVERVIEW

Whenever you begin a mission, training oroperational, you first go through thePlanning Phase. Covert Operations and theentire Rainbow Six series places a largeemphasis on planning. Hostage RescueTeams rarely, if ever, go into a situationunprepared. Too many lives are on the lineto start an action without having planned outas much of it as possible.

During the course of the operationalcampaign, you may discover you spendmuch more time in the Planning Phase thanyou do during the Action Phase. While youcan spend an hour or more planning amission, actually executing the mission willoften take only a matter of minutes.

The Planning Phase consists of six mainsteps:

    1. Receiving the mission briefing and yourorders2. Reviewing all available intelligencesources3. Selecting up to eight operatives toparticipate in the mission4. Selecting the weapons and equipmentthose operatives will use during the mission5. Dividing the operatives into fire teams6. Preparing a detailed fire and movementplan so each team knows exactly where togo, what to do, and how to do it.

Once all of the planning is complete, youcontinue to the Action Phase where youexecute your plan. If the mission fails, youshould return to the Planning Phase, modifythe plan to correct the problems, then tryagain.

The Planning Phase takes place on ascreen, which resembles a Personal DataAssistant. As the leader of RAINBOW, youuse this PDA to set up a mission. The mainscreen area is where you perform mostactions. At the bottom of the screen are sixbuttons and a large indicator area with twoarrows.

As you progress through the planningphase, notice the small icons along thebottom of the PDA. The first three buttons,on the left side, are options specific to eachscreen in the planning interface.

Access to the Intel database is on a need toknow basis, regardless of your level ofclearance. Consequently, many subjectswont appear on the Intel screen until youhave received an assignment for whichknowledge of them is essential.

The Intel screen is where you can tap intobackground information for the operationalmissions. It is split into three main areas: theCategories List, the Subject List and the TextBox. This screen also includes the missionobjectives and photographs of the currentsubject.

Category ListThe information found in the Intel screen isdivided into four category lists. The Peoplecategory lists the various personalities youencounter during the campaign. TheOrganisations category covers companies, groups, etc. Finally, any information thatdoes not fit into the other categories isavailable in the miscellaneous category.

Subject ListOnce you select a category, a number ofsubjects become available in the SubjectList. By clicking on a subject, the namehighlights and the corresponding informationappears in the text box. It is usually a goodidea to read through all the latestintelligence before starting on a mission. Itcan offer clues on what you are up against.

When you are finished going over theintelligence information, click on the rightarrow to go to the next screen. Before thenext screen appears, a dialogue box will popup and ask if you want to use the defaultplan for the mission. Make your selection, then the Roster screen appears.

    BRIEFING

    Planning Phase - Briefing Screen

The Briefing screen is where you find outwhat the mission is all about as well as theobjectives you must accomplish for themission to be considered a success. Studyyour objectives carefully. Your entire planmust revolve around them.

The first screen that appears whenbeginning or resuming a campaign is theBriefing screen. Here, you receive yourorders and learn what the mission is allabout. The screen is split into three mainsections. At the top centre of the screen arethe mission objectives. To the left is the Listof Advisors. Along the bottom is the texttranscript for each briefing. The remainder ofthe screen contains photographs of themission area to help you get acquainted withthe terrain and conditions.

ObjectivesObjectives are probably the most importantpieces of information you can obtain fromthe Briefing screen. The Objectivessuccinctly state what you must accomplishto consider the mission a success. Often itwill be to rescue all hostages or to plantbugs for surveillance. At times, there will bemore than one objective. The Objectives arewhat you must build your plan aroundbecause they are the purpose of themission. Click the Mission Orders button onthe left for more information on theobjectives for the current mission.

List of AdvisorsYou always have at least three advisors fromwhich to choose along the left side of theBriefing screen. The first is Control. Thisbrief informs you of the general situation andwhat you must do during the mission. Inaddition to the recorded audio briefing, youcan read the transcript in the text box at thebottom of the page. John Clark is the nextbrief. Clark always offers a few suggestionsfor each mission. At times, other people willoffer specialised information to assist youduring the mission. STATSBelow the bio are three different files youcan examine: stats, history and medical. Themedical file lists the operatives personalcharacteristics and how long it will take torecover from wounds. History provides thebackground and training of the operative.Stats lists the operatives capabilities andskills in ten specific areas. Six of these areconsidered specialty skills and the other fourare profile traits. Each of these ten areasrate on a scale of 1 to 100, with anythingover 90 considered expert.

SPECIALTY SKILLSSpecialty skills reflect learned and trainedabilities. They define how well the operativecan use equipment. These skills affect alloperatives alike, whether you or thecomputer is controlling them. Therefore, always choose team leaders with the skillsyou will need to complete the mission.

Assault - This skill determines theoperatives ability to use firearms as well asthe size of the targeting reticule. The higherthe assault skill, the smaller the reticule andthe faster he or she targets an enemy. Italso effects how fast Auto Target will track toan enemy. For more information on thetargeting reticule, see the TargetingReticule portion in section 3-23 ActionPhase of this manual. An operative uses theassault skill when firing any gun without thesniper view activated. Your team leaders

should always have a high assault skill sincethey are in the lead and will usually see theenemy first and have the first shot.

If you like what you see and want toselect this operative for the mission, click onthe Add bar above the list and the operativespicture will appear in one of the eight boxesshowing assigned operatives.

Each operative has strengths andweaknesses. In addition, each has aspecialty. There are five different specialtiesin Covert Operations: Assault, Demolitions,Electronics, Recon and Sniper. Theoperatives are organised according tospecialty on the list. Those with the Assaultspecialty will often form the core of yourteam for a mission. They are proficient in theuse of firearms and trained in the generalskills of hostage rescue. Demolitionsspecialists are best for breaching doors, using grenades and disarming or placing

bombs and explosives. Electronicsspecialists are great for getting throughsecurity systems or accessing computerterminals. Recon specialists excel at quietlymoving around the mission area andscouting out enemy locations. Finally, snipers are good with long-range weapons.

Whenever an operatives name ishighlighted, their dossier appears to theright. It contains a picture of the operative, his or her readiness, a bio, stats, personalhistory and medical information.

READINESS In between the operatives picture and theirnational flag is the readiness indicator. ForCovert Operations, There are two states ofreadiness for each operative, KIA or Ready.

Ready - This means the operative iscapable of being used on this mission andsuffers no adverse modifiers to their skills.

KIA - This means the operative was killedduring a previous mission and is no longeravailable for the remainder of the campaign.

PROFILE TRAITSProfile Traits represent the character of theoperative. Unlike learned skills, traits areboth learned and inherent. They reflect thephysical and psychological make-up of eachoperative.

Aggression - This trait determines the basicnature of the operative and only comes intoplay with computer-controlled charactersthat snap (see Self Control later in thissection). The more aggressive theoperative, the more likely he or she usesextreme force when under pressure, possibly hurting a hostage with stray fire. Onthe other hand, a passive operative mayseek cover or panic.

Leadership - Leadership is the trait you lookfor in determining a team leader. Anoperatives leadership level affects the self-control level of the others in the same team- good or bad. Always put good leaders incharge of each of your teams.

Self Control - This trait determines how wellan operative handles the pressure andstress of combat. The higher the level, theless likely the operative will snap or panic. If an operative snaps, his or her aggressionlevel will dictate how they react.

Stamina - Some people are tougher thanothers. Stamina determines how manywounds an operative can receive beforebecoming incapacitated. The greater thestamina level, the more damage they cantake and keep going.

PLAYING COVERT OPS: SINGLE PLAYERDemolitions - This skill determines thespeed with which an operative works withdemolitions. The demolitions skill affectsplacing breaching charges or explosives aswell as when disarming a bomb. The higherthe skill level, the shorter the time it takes.

You should usually assign an operative withhigh demolitions skill level to the team thatbreaches doors or handles bombs. Keepthis operative either in the middle or rear ofthe team so the other assault operatives canoffer protection. See the Team heading laterin this section to determine how to placeoperatives within teams.

Electronics - This skill determines thespeed with which an operative manipulateselectronics. This includes placing bugs, picking locks, using computers or bypassingsecurity systems. There are a few missionsthat require these types of actions. Alwaysassign this task to the operative with thebest electronics skill level since speed isalmost always of essence. You want toprovide cover for these operatives as well.

Grenades - This skill determines theaccuracy of thrown weapons such asflashbangs and frag grenades. It also affectsthe amount of time taken to prepare agrenade prior to throwing it.

Sniper - This skill determines the accuracyof the operative while using a sniper rifle. When firing an assault rifle using the sniperview, this skill adds to the assault skill level. The higher the skill, the more quickly he cantarget a hostile. It represents the operativesability to hit targets at long range. This skillonly comes into play when using the zoomfeature of your weapon.

Stealth - This skill determines how muchnoise an operative makes while walking. While other factors also figure into theequation, the stealth skill is important. If youneed an operative to be able to sneak up onthe enemy, make sure they have a highstealth skill level.

Ammunition TypesIn the case of the primary and secondaryweapons, you can also choose the type ofammunition. Pistols, submachine guns, assault rifles and sniper rifles can fire eitherFull Metal Jacket (FMJ) or Jacketed HollowPoint (JHP). FMJ is better at penetratingbody armour and for use at long range. JHPis most effective at close range againsttargets without body armour. Shotguns havethree choices: .00 Buckshot, Slugs orRubber Batons. The SPAS 12 cannot useSlugs. Buckshot is best for targets withoutbody armour and for breaching doors. However, it usually takes a couple of shotsto neutralise terrorists. Slugs immobiliseterrorist with a single shot. However, they donot have the spread of buckshot. RubberBatons are primarily for training purposes. They are most effective when you have tocapture someone or when you areconcerned about possibly hitting a hostagenear a terrorist. In most cases, you shouldstick with FMJ and Buckshot. However, change the ammo if the situation calls for it.

Once you decide which operatives to use forthe current mission in the Roster screen, it istime to assign them weapons andequipment. This, along with the uniform, comprises the operatives kit. While eachspecialty has its own default kit, you can andshould customise each operatives kit for thetasks he or she must perform during thecurrent mission. For example, if an operativemust breach a door during a mission, makesure he or she has a breaching charge orother way of accomplishing the job.

In Covert Operations, each team memberhas four inventory slots: primary weapons, secondary weapon and special slots oneand two. The primary weapon can be asubmachine gun, assault rifle, sniper rifle ora shotgun. Secondary weapons are alwayspistols. PLANNING

    Planning Phase Plan Map

The Planning screen is the heart of thePlanning Phase. It is here you give orders toall of your teams and instruct them what todo during the mission.

The old adage To fail to plan is to plan to failis extremely appropriate to CovertOperations. The Planning screen is whereyou give orders to each of your fire teams asto what they must do and how they do itduring the mission. Since you can only be incontrol of one team at a time, you shouldmake the entire plan as comprehensive aspossible. In other words, each and everyteam should be able to complete theirassigned tasks without being under yourdirect control. However, you can also make aplan as simple as you want.

The Planning screen is divided into threemain areas: the Map Orders Menu, the Map,and the Map Controls. The menu on the leftside of the screen is the Map Orders menu.At the top of the menu are three tabs thatalter the topics of the menu display.

These topics include:Recon This is the first tab. Real worldhostage rescue teams gather as much dataas possible on the locations of terrorists andhostages within the operational area prior toany deliberate assault. They collect thisinformation from observer posts, theplacement of spike mikes, fiber opticcameras, and even by using millimetre waveradar that render exterior walls essentiallyinvisible to the scanning source. SinceRAINBOW operations focus on the assaultitself, not intelligence gathering, these typesof operations have been simulated for you.

Click the Recon tab to bring up the reconmenu. This lists four different types ofinformation about the map. There are fourradio buttons along the lower left side. Clickon one of them to select a topic. Once youchoose a topic, use the arrows to scrollthrough the related items on the map.

Hostages - Scrolling through this topicshows you the locations of all hostages. Thehostage symbol on the map is a whitebroken square around a coloured dot. Agreen dot represents a primary hostage. Ablue dot represents a hostage is nearby, butnot necessarily at the exact location on themap.

Terrorists - There are often many moreterrorists than those shown on the map, andthe given locations are approximate. Neverrely solely on this information. Crossesrepresent terrorists. Red crosses show theexact location of terrorists.

    Planning Phase Team Selection Screen

The commander of each fire team shouldhave strong leadership skills as well as goodassault skills since he or she will be in thefront of the team.

The Team Assignment screen is where youdivide your operatives into fire teams. Youcan have up to four different teams and eachteam can contain up to four operatives fromthe total pool of eight. You can form two four-man teams, four- two man teams or anythingin between. It is always a good idea to haveat least two operatives in a team sincesending a lone operative in without backupcan be dangerous. If something happens tothe team leader, the next operative on theteam becomes the leader. Remember totake this into account when planning yourteams.

NOTE - You do not have to use eight operatives.

To assign an operative to a team, first clickon their name in the list on the left tohighlight it. Then click on the Add buttonabove the appropriate team window. Theorder of the operatives in each team window, from top to bottom, represents their positionin the team. The top name is the teamleader. Each subsequent operative comesnext in the team formation during the ActionPhase. So the last name in the team windowwill be the operative bringing up the rear.

If you want to change the team leader, highlight the operatives name on the list tothe left, then click on the Promote buttonabove the team window. PLOTTING MOVEMENT

To begin giving your teams orders, firstselect a coloured triangle in the upper leftcorner to choose a team. You plotmovement on the map by using waypoints tocreate a path for the team to follow. Start byplacing the first waypoint in an insertionzone with a left mouse click. Then click onthe map at another point where you want theteam to go. When you set the secondwaypoint, a line automatically connectsthem. For each waypoint, you can assignactions associated with that point such aschanging the Rules of Engagement Modeand Speed, Go Codes or Special Actions. You can choose these from the Ordersmenu and will be discussed in greater detaillater.

Below the map are the Map Controls. On theleft side are four coloured lines with arrows. When you highlight these, the path for thecorresponding coloured team is visible onthe map. Clicking on these lines turns thepath off. When you have several teamstraversing a small area such as a hallway orcorridor, it can be hard to differentiatebetween the paths. Therefore, turn off thepaths for those teams you are not currentlyplotting.

To the right of these lines are the waypointcontrols. The number is the designation forthe current waypoint. The arrow buttonsabove it allow you to do the following inorder: return to the first waypoint, go backone waypoint, play through the waypoints, advance one waypoint, and go to the finalwaypoint. The play button is a good way toreview the movement for a team because it

begins with the current waypoint andadvances slowly one waypoint at a time tothe end. The button with the X deletes thecurrently highlighted waypoint while thebutton with the XX deletes all waypointsassigned for the team.
