PresenterPresentation NotesBuildings project case (Karolinska hospital)

ChallengeAn important mission is to enhance integration between healthcare, research and education. Rapid knowledge transfer between research and healthcare is to be achieved by – among other things – concentration and joint use of resources and skills, which makes great demands of how the buildings are planned and designed. This means that demands of flexibility and robustness are very high.

The technical equipment in modern hospitals is extremely sensitive to vibrations – and since all the spaces in the building have to be suitable for multiple uses, the vibration requirements are very high for the whole structure

What did Ramboll do?Ramboll has been involved in the project from an early stage, initially in preliminary studies into the possibility of building a new hospital and subsequently in the preparation of tender documents and in reviewing the documents received.

Ramboll has also been commissioned by Skanska Healthcare, responsible for the design and the building process for the New Karolinska Solna, to carry out project planning of the building structures.

Ramboll has design responsibility for the entire hospital building and the research building, as well as for 8 radiation therapy rooms – just over 75% of the project’s total building structures.

Effect for society/clientA building design that enhances the integration between healthcare, research and education.

Realising the world’s biggest and most ambitious hospital project

HIGH QUALITY DRINKING WATER IN SKELLEFTEÅ Client: Municipality of Skellefteå

CHALLENGE The city of Skellefteå suffered from cryptosporidium in the drinking water. The municipality hence decided to replace the old waterworks by a new treatment plant.

WHAT WE DO In partnership with Skellefteå Municipality and NCC, Ramboll is lead consultant on a project of establishing a new treatment plant treating the water with artificial groundwater recharge followed by oxidation, filtration and disinfection. Ramboll is (also) responsible for all detailed design.

EFFECT Long-term certainty for high quality drinking water in the future, as the projects solves several issues at the same time: • Quality issues of the drinking water • Capacity issues • Climate change issues • Water reserve issues

PresenterPresentation NotesRamboll is the lead consultant for the project “New Water Supply for Skellefteå Municipality with surrounding communities”. Access to safe drinking water is a basic human right and a key component of an efficient policy for health protection. However, five years ago the city of Skellefteå in Northern Sweden suffered from Cryptosporidium in the drinking water. Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite that causes the diarrheal disease, so for seven months the inhabitants had to boil their drinking water before use.The municipality decided to replace the old and worn waterworks with a new treatment plant (Design capacity 28 000 m3/d), water reservoirs and pipelines to the city of Skellefteå, that treats the water with artificial groundwater recharge followed by oxidation, filtration and disinfection to ensure high drinking water quality. The new water source is located about 15 km west of Skellefteå. Ramboll worked together with the client and the contractor in a partnering contract and has performed a feasibility study and produced a principle design, optimized the process, and delivered pre- and detail design of the plant and all other required facilities. Ramboll also participated in the commissioning and optimization of the plant and distribution together with the client. The treatment process was designed to meet the conditions set in the feasibility study. During the work with principle design and detail design phase basins, tanks and equipment were selected to manage the required function. However, the initial ambitious redundancy strategy generated investment demanded such as several by-passes with pipes and extra equipment such as pumps for dosing chemicals etc. that affected the cost of the project to exceed the municipality’s budget. Due to the optimization phase the overall cost for the project could be reduced with approximately 2 MEUR.The project was the largest of its kind in Sweden, and our project team included experts from 10 different offices. In the end The Skellefteå project was a unique and rather complex project where Ramboll made a real difference by bringing our strong capabilities within water resources and water treatment into play.

We have worked with the project since Jan 2013. All Ramboll disciplines have been involved.Through the whole project we have been three parties working together. Ramboll is responsible for the detailed design. I have been part of a steering committee together with the director fron NCC North and the Water, Wastewater and Waste director in Skellefteå mun together with the three PMs from the three parties. The project solves quality issues of the drinking water, capacity issues, climate change issues,  legislation issues about three micro biological barriers and  have solved the issue with a water reserve (if something happens to the raw water source). We have also helped the with all permits needed, risk assessments and water protection areas. It is a new WTP 20 km from the city, so the project include doubled main networks to town.Drinking water with a ground water character is produced from surface water through artificial recharged, three new areas will around 40 new wells, all water is pumped to the new WTP which include aeration, filtration, disinfection before distribution. Investment of 620 MSEK. On budget. On time schedule. A very good collaboration. The final inspection will be carried out March 13th and after that Ramboll will start working with start-up procedures, operation instructions, training of operational staff .

  • KAUPINOJA SURFACE WATER PLANT, FINLAND Tampereen Vesi, Econet Oy CHALLENGE To modernize a plant that was built in 1920s’ and expanded later. Plant had not been renovated since 1980s’ after it was demoted to a stand by unit.

Plant needed full upgrade in terms of equipment and automation so that it can be primary water source for majority of Tampere residents.

WHAT WE DID EPC construction started 10/2013 and Ramboll had following roles, for example: • Safety coordinator and supervision of

construction (every workday) • Project management • Supervision of tender process for

security systems • Additional planning (two pumping

    stations, valve station, chlorination system)

+ several miscellaneous tasks from keeping the minutes of the meeting to evaluation of provided plans from contractor.

EFFECT Modern water plant with lower water treatment and overall pumping costs.

The modernisation of the surface water treatment plant and the pumping plant extension of Tampereen Vesi and Tampereen Sähkölaitos were completed in 2017.

  • NEW WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT IN KRISTIANSUND, NORWAY CHALLENGE Difficult to efficiently operate several small sieve plants when new treatment requirements were imposed. Needed to establish a new wastewater treatment plant.

WHAT WE DID Recommended equipment and systems. Designed treatment plant. Moved discharges to a better recipient. Planned for future expansion and stricter treatment requirements.

EFFECT More efficient treatment and healthier recipients. Meet the new treatment requirements.
