ABSTRACT
Our presentation summarizes the state of the art in first two Romanian rabbit breeds with
real chances of homologation. Transylvanian Giant Rabbit is standardized at the national and
European level (for exhibitions and European Championships) (Petrescu-Mag et al 2012). The
process of national homologation of the Transylvanian Giant Rabbit as a breed of production is
supervised in Romania by ANARZ and it is in progress. Transylvanian Giant Rabbit is a large
sized breed of 4.5 - 9 kg and was produced mainly for meat production. It has its origins in many
distinct populations of rabbits: the common Romanian rabbit, German Grey Giant, Giant
Papillon and Californian. The second rabbit breed, Rabbit of Cluj, is only nationally
standardized (Botha et al 2013). It derived from a spontaneous mutation from the New Zealand
White. The phenotype of the new breed seems a slightly finer New Zealand White (with finer
bone structure and extremities) caring a chinchilla color gene (ch). It is a medium-sized rabbit,
with weight varying from 3.5 kg to 5.5 kg. Before the homologation, the Cluj Rabbit breed
needs serious work of genetic improvement and consolidation.
