7 THE RATIBUL HADDAAD
We thank the Almighty Allah for the honour and privilege of completing this noble project. It is solely through His Mercy that this booklet and the accompanying audio have come to fruition. We implore Him to open the minds and hearts of all its readers and listeners to its profound meaning and beauty.
COVID PANDEMIC
The Ratibul Haddaad has been a spiritual pillar of Cape Muslims for a long time, providing support and contentment during various trials that this unique community has endured. The Covid pandemic is but the latest of these trials, testing our community with severe loss and illness, for which we say Alghamdulillah, as we realise how limited our knowledge is of this world.
The purpose of this booklet and its accom- panying audio is to make available to Muslims this spiritual tradition that will assist them in these difficult times, Insha-Allah. Many have lost loved ones, means of sustenance or suffered the debilitating effects of the virus, placing them in a challenging psychological and emotional space. The recitation of the Ratibul Haddaad is a spiritual balm that will assist in the healing process. Pondering over its profound meaning will take the reciter closer to our Creator.
RATIBUL HADDAAD
TRIBUTE TO PIONEERS
We pay tribute to our pioneers, who arrived here in chains in an atmosphere of aggressive colonial Islamophobia, distant from their homelands and beloved ones. Their tenacity, taqwa and truth to power are legacies we must treasure, along with the cultural traditions like the Ratibul Haddaad they established which placed barakah in their lives. Not only did some of them introduce these athkaar to the local community, but others left behind beautiful handwritten copies that are still in pristine condition.
We also pay tribute to the many historians, past and present, who have spent countless hours researching our rich cultural history, for our history needs to be documented by ourselves, lest others do our narrative a disservice. As for the Ratibul Haddaad, we have no certainty as to who or when it was first brought to the Cape. While our historians have advanced many plausible theories, at this stage it represents speculation lacking scientific evidence. Nevertheless, we would like to record our profound appreciation to Dr Eshaam Palmer for his two articles, especially in formulating the state of our knowledge about the Ratibul Haddaad in 2021.
The Ratibul Haddaad is an oral tradition, and to that end an audio link to the booklet is
essential. We have striven to strike a balance between traditional laagu
and proper tajweed, with our chosen group,

We have also been very fortunate to have at our disposal Arabic scholars both locally and from the Middle East who have meticulously translated the Arabic Ratibul Haddaad into an updated English version. We thank them for their efforts and pray that Allah Almighty reward them abundantly.
Finally, we would like to thank all our sponsors for making this publication possible, for your sadaqatul jaariyah will endure as long as this noble tradition is practised in the Cape and beyond.

A PROFILE OF IMÃM AL-HADDAAD
In the south of Yemen lies the Hadramawt Valley, deprived of water and other essential resources, thus leaving crops struggling to survive. The land is rugged and harsh and offers no luxuries. However, it was a centre of learning and scholarship and is home to many descendants of the Prophet (SAW). This land also never had peace as rival tribes were constantly at war with each other. The Shi’a Zaydis of north Yemen on numerous occasions invaded the Hadramawt Valley.

SMALLPOX BLINDNESS
Imãm Abdallah al-Haddaad was born into this environment, 387 years ago, in the town of Tarm. At 3 years old he became blind as a result of a smallpox infection. At a young age he spent his time in devotion being scrupulous in everything he undertook. In his teens he slept little and performed all the fard prayers in the mosque. After Fajr he would perform the four raka’ats of Ishrãq and the eight raka’ats of Duhã, and after Maghrib he performed 20 raka’ats salaat al awwabn. After Isha he continued with dhikr before retiring to his quarters. The Imãm was tall, fair skinned and always smiled.
During his lifetime he studied under the guidance of over 100 scholars, of whom his main teachers were Sayyid Umr al- Attãs and Sayyid Muhammad ibn Alawi, while his closest friend and companion was Sayyid al- Aydarus. His students used to read to him the works of the great scholars like Imam Ghazali and Imam Suyuti, and notwithstanding his handicap, he authored a number of important books containing material that is still relevant. Among these were The Lives of Man, Counsels of Religion and the Book of Assistance, as well as a number of poems and litanies (a form of dhikr), including the Ratibul Haddaad.
MUJADDID
His lectures and talks were attended by audiences of hundreds of people who came from all over Yemen to enlighten themselves with his intellectual and spiritual presence. After practising tasawwuf most of his life, he became accepted as the Mujaddid of his age and the Qutb of Sufi Orders. The Imam’s choice of mathhab was that of Imam Shafi’i.
IMAM AL-HADDAAD
13 THE RATIBUL HADDAAD
His lectures were important for the practice of Islam as during that age many people reluctantly implemented Islamic principles. During his lectures he was very patient and courteous and answered all questions even if they did not warrant much attention. Such kind and generous behaviour endeared him to his followers and students. However, he never neglected his family and always set aside time for them, separating his private and public lives.
He had 10 children, six boys and four girls, and it was his fourth eldest son, al-Hassan, who spent a lot of time in the company of the Imãm, and who ultimately became his successor in the Ba’Alawiyya Sufi Order. His other sons became scholars in their own right. At the age of 35, the Imãm performed his first and only Hajj, and entered Makka on a donkey. He stayed in Makka and Madina for a year, meeting with many scholars and people wishing to be in his company. By this time the fame of the Imãm had spread far and wide in the Islamic world.
The Imãm taught that people are driven by their passions and appetites, which are the first obstacles they must overcome in order to come closer to Allah. People must acknowledge that everything comes from Allah and must follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW) as much as possible. People must fear Allah and hope for His Mercy, then they will not fear the future or a reduction of their rizq. The Imãm was averse to publicity and materialism, and loved solitude.
NINE STATIONS OF CERTAINTY
He taught that the highest level of a Sufi is love and contentment, and that second only to Allah, people must love the Prophet (SAW) more than their parents or children. The Imãm propagated nine stations of certainty: patience in times of difficulty, gratitude for everything received, detachment from materialism, reliance only on Allah; love of Allah, the Prophet (SAW), your parents and all Allah’s creations; and contentment
IMAM AL-HADDAAD
with your condition in life, whether good or bad.
He commenced each day by reciting the fatiha thrice for: 1) the general welfare of all Muslims; 2) his deceased ancestors and teachers; and 3) the fulfilment of his needs and those around him. The Imãm strongly discouraged speaking between the athãn and commencement of the salãh as it was a time for preparation and concentration. He regularly embarked on a three-day journey to visit the tomb of Nabi Hud (AS) for purposes of meditation and introspection.
The Imãm annually read the Mawlid of the Prophet (SAW) during 12 and 14 Sha’bãn. As part of his practise of tasawwuf he performed the hadra as a means of gathering people to remember Allah. His main place of residence was a cottage annexed to the Masjid al-Hawi in Tarm. During his lifetime, he gave away all his wealth to the needy and lived a very simple life. He told a story of a chameleon that came to his door and he stopped his followers from brushing it away. When asked why he entertained the chameleon, he answered that the chameleon had a complaint that a jinn was causing him problems and he resolved the issue between them.
ATTAINING A PURE HEART
The Imãm stated that of the main aims of Sufism are to discard bad qualities, like lying and boasting – and attain praiseworthy ones, like kindness and honesty so that they could meet Allah with a pure heart. He taught that the more one was attached to materialism, the more one’s

spirituality diminished. When he gave advice or presented lectures he spoke to the audience at their level of understanding.
At the age of 88, the Imãm developed a lump in his stomach and was cared for daily by his son al-Hassan. He told his companions not to visit him, but to pray for him. In his last six days he lay in prayer and meditation until he passed away peacefully. As he breathed his last, al-Hassan saw a light emanate from his body. There were so many people following the Imãm’s
may’yit that the journey to the burial place lasted from Asr to Maghrib. Although he was blind since a young age he made a significant impact globally by way of his lectures and literary works. In Cape Town he is fondly remembered as the originator of the Ratibul Haddaad.

HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF THE RÃTIBUL HADDAAD AT THE CAPE
The originator and author of the Rãtibul Haddaad, Imam Abdullah al- Haddãd was born into a very pious family and despite losing his sight at 3 years old, he authored a number of books which, in addition to his lectures, made a global impact on the spread of Islam. It was as if Allah the Merciful replaced his physical sight with spiritual insight. The Muslim world at that time was experiencing incessant political turmoil, with both internal and external adversaries that led to great instability in the region. However, this did not distract the Imam from his chosen ascetic path and his intensive spiritual training started early and endured till his death at the age of 88 years old. The Imam was the Qutb of the Bã’Alawiyyah Sufi Order (tariqa) and is a descendant of the Prophet (SAW).
SPREAD OF ISLAM
The Rãtibul Haddaad is one of a number of litanies and poems that he composed and is a form of dhikr. The da’wah spread by the Imam and his descendants was one of the main reasons for the rapid spread of Islam in countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and southern India. The Rãtibul Haddaad came to the Imam by inspiration, and during a period when he was at the pinnacle of his intellectual and spiritual capability.
The Rãtibul Haddaad was inaugurated whilst the Imam was on Hajj and soon it reached the shores of many countries. The Imam said that reciting the Rãtibul Haddaad was good for protection of a town or city and where people have a special request for their Creator.
RATIBUL HADDAAD
HISTORY & EVOLUTION
PREAMBLE
The Rãtibul Haddaad is usually preceded by a preamble consisting of Srah Yãsn, Srah al-Mulk and the Asmã ul Husnã and there after commences with:
Srah al-Fãtiha It is reported that the Prophet (SAW) stated that Srah al-Fãtiha, which has seven oft-repeated verses is the greatest Surah in the Quran.
Ãyãt al-Kurs The Prophet (SAW) said in a hadith that Muslims who recite Ãyãt al-Kurs when they go to bed, Allah will appoint a guard who will protect them all night long.
Srah al-Baqara (last two verses) It is reported that the Prophet (SAW) said that if someone recites the last two verses of Srah al-Baqara at night, it will be sufficient for them.
There are about 25 clearly discernible segments, including supplications like: O Allah! Grant us excellent steadfastness; reliance on You alone; grant us wisdom and beneficial knowledge; and bless us O Allah with lawful and wholesome sustenance, without any hardship or difficulty. O Most Generous and Bountiful grant us a good ending, without any trials or tribulations.
The Rãtibul Haddaad has been discussed and translated into English by a number of South African Muslim scholars, including Shaykhs Abdullah Abduraouf, Ismail Ganief, Taha Gamieldien (handwritten version) and Amien Fakier. The latest publication was by Professor Ghoesain Mohamed, who sadly passed on recently.
SHEIKH YUSUF
Although there is no tangible evidence to conclusively prove the origin of the Rãtibul Haddaad in the Cape, a number of historians hold the view
19 THE RATIBUL HADDAAD
HISTORY & EVOLUTION
that it was introduced by Shaykh Yusuf of Macassar. Shaykh Yusuf, an Indonesian of noble descent was exiled to the Cape in 1693, and although he was not the first Muslim to arrive at the Cape, he is generally known to have established Islam at the Cape. The reason for his exile was that he led military forces against the Dutch colonisers. Shaykh Yusuf departed for Makka in 1644 and remained there for about 20 years studying under the
guidance of many learned scholars. It is believed by some that Shaykh Yusuf met Imam al-Haddãd and learnt the Rãtibul Haddaad directly from him, although historical records indicate that the Imam performed Hajj in 1669 and thus it would not have been possible for them to have met during 1669.
The attempt by the Dutch to isolate Shaykh Yusuf by establishing him at the farm “Zandvliet” did not
succeed as the Shaykh’s residence turned out to be the rallying point for “fugitive” slaves and other exiles. It was here that the first cohesive Muslim community in South Africa was established. Since the Shaykh hailed from Macassar, the area around Zandvliet farm is today known as Macassar.
There was a Dutch law (placaaten) in place at the Cape which pro hibited the practising of any religion other than that propagated by the Dutch Reformed Church. The penalties for propagating Islam were severe, like stretching on the rack, cutting off one or more of the limbs or being hanged. The slaves were regularly subjected to torture and inhuman treatment as they were seen as the property of their masters. However, Shaykh Yusuf was treated with dignity due to his royal origin and was thus able to conduct lessons in Islam to fugitive slaves and free Blacks in secret.

HISTORY & EVOLUTION
ORIGIN OF LAAGU As it was unlawful to propagate Islam, Shaykh Yusuf added a tune (laagu) to the recital of the Rãtibul Haddaad in order to bypass the prohibition of propagating Islam. Singing was common amongst the slaves and thus they could recite the Rãtibul Haddaad with laagu, thus duping the Dutch authorities and soldiers into thinking that they were merely singing. Despite Islam being forbidden, many runaway slaves and indigenous people embraced Islam under the tutelage of Shaykh Yusuf.
SAYYID ALAWI Other historians are of the view that it was Sayyid Alawi that introduced the Rãtibul Haddaad at the Cape. He was from Mocca in Yemen and arrived at the Cape in 1774. He was
banished by the Dutch to the Cape to be kept in chains for the rest of his life. The Dutch authorities referred to him as a Mohammedan Priest. He remained in chains on Robben Island for 11 years and on his release he went to Cape Town. He was known for his active da’wah amongst the slaves at the Slave Lodge and later became a policeman, which gave him unfettered access to the Slave Lodge. He is generally regarded as the first “official” imam at the Cape and is buried at the Tana Baru cemetery.
It seems more likely that Sayyid Alawi introduced the Rãtibul Haddaad at the Cape as he was of the same tariqa as Imam al-Haddãd, namely the Ba’Alawiyya tariqa. Shaykh Yusuf was of the Khalwatiyya tariqa and it would be unusual for a member of one tariqa to propagate a litany of another tariqa.
SLAVERY AND SINGING Music and singing was common to slaves globally as a way to express
21 THE RATIBUL HADDAAD
HISTORY & EVOLUTION
their sorrow or joy, for example African slaves in the USA and Europe regularly sang gospel songs. Most of the early Muslim pioneers were affiliated to a Sufi tariqa where it is common to recite dhikr with a laagu. Thus it is not unusual for the Rãtibul Haddaad to have been recited with a laagu. The Rãtibul Haddaad can be recited individually or in a group, with or without a laagu. This practise of reciting the Rãtibul Haddaad continued through the colonial and Apartheid eras until democracy arrived, a period of over 300 years. When religious freedom was granted in 1804 and slavery was abolished in 1838, the number of Muslims rose dramatically and in 1842 they formed more than two thirds of the Cape population. The spread of Islam was rapid due to the many pious and brave Orang Cayen (Muslim political exiles) like Shaykh Yusuf, Tuan Guru and Sayyid Alawie.
From the early 1800s this practice became known as a gadat, which was usually recited at a merang on the 7th, 40th and 100th days after the occurrence of a death. The gadat was a communal occasion accompanied by special food and also allowed for participation by children.
The recital of the Rãtibul Haddaad aligns us with everything that is contained in the universe, which in its most basic form, the atom, is in a constant state of dhikrullah. Dhikr can heal the illnesses of the heart and the body and ultimately enable us to receive the Divine Message. Allah says in Surah al-Ra’d: Those who believe, and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allah; for without doubt, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find satisfaction. (urah 13, verse 28)
THIKR GUIDE COLLECTION 22
HISTORY & EVOLUTION
BARAKAT In later years the gadat was performed on a Thursday evening and on Sundays; however, the occurrence has dwindled to mainly being performed on a Thursday evening. There was a variety of dishes served at the gadats, including boeber, gadat melk, and melktert. A barakat (take home cake) was given to the team performing the gadat and often to those people attending as well.
For a number of reasons, including television, social media, the breaking up of Muslim communities during the Apartheid era, growth of wealth and materialism amongst the Muslim population; gadats are not conducted as frequently as in the earlier days. Mostly older men attend gadats with most younger men being occupied with their social and secular activities. It is essential that the practice of gadats and other religious rituals like maulood, commemorating mi’araj and ru’a continues as it is a determining factor of the Cape Muslim culture and forms part of its identity. It is a critical part of the transformation of Muslims from being slaves to where they are today and keeps the level of spirituality from being relegated to the sidelines.
However, there are favourable signs of a wider attachment to gadats in the Cape Flats areas where violence and gang activities occur unabated. For the past three years, a team of Muslim clerics has been on a mission to bring peace to Manenberg and other areas of Cape Town.
Some Thursday evenings, an open-air abridged version of the gadat is recited and is attended by up to 200 people. Food is served after the ritual recital as the areas are mostly impoverished. We make dua that Allah Almighty must bless their noble efforts and that the barakah of the Ratibul Haddaad will bring peace, protection and provision for these needy communities, Insha-Allah.

RATIBUL HADDAAD WITH THE TEXT
A number of audio versions of the Ratibul Haddaad, corresponding to the text in this book, have been recorded as part of this project. To assist the reader to connect the verses in the book to these audio recordings, all the verses have been numbered (from 0 to 123) and appear in the BLUE BLOCK on the RIGHT SIDE of the verse. We trust this will also assist in making the book more useful as a learning tool.
The first version of the audio to be released will be the ARABIC ONLY version. These 123 verses have been grouped under 13 different tracks, making it easier to locate a verse on the audio. The track numbers appear in both the contents pages as well as in the main body, with the Arabic text denoted under the GREEN BELT indicating the track number.
This second audio version of the Ratibul Haddaad consists of verse-by-verse translation of the original Arabic into English.
These audio renditions of the Ratibul Haddaad will be available for downloading from the boorhaanol.org.za website FREE of charge. For those who have difficulty in downloading from the website, the mp3 files can be copied to your memory stick, ALSO FREE of charge. Memory sticks with all the audios in the Boorhaanol Thikr Collection series can be purchased online or from the Boorhaanol Offices.
