Rawlinson (q.v.), dem zweitenKeilschriftentzifferer, wurde wie sein Bruder in Chadlington, Oxfordshire,geboren. Seine Schulausbildung erhielt er in der Swansea Grammar School. 1835trat er ins Trinity College, Oxford, ein. 1840 wurde er zum Mitglied des ExeterCollege gewhlt. 1842 und im folgenden Jahr erhielt er den Denyer-Preis fr

Verffentlichungen theologischer Artikel. Mehrere Jahre war er Tutor seinesColleges, 1852 dessen Moderator und im selben Jahr sowie 1856 dessenffentlicher Examinator, ferner Examinator fr klassisches Altertum beim Ratfr Militr-Ausbildung. Von 1861-1889 hielt er die Position desCamden-Professors fr Alte Geschichte zu Oxford inne. 1872 avancierte er zumKanoniker von Canterbury. Auf Vorschlag des Sprechers des House of Commons,J.E. Denison, wurde er zum Herausgeber der historischen Bcher des NewCommentary on the Scriptures gewhlt. - Mit seiner bersetzung undKommentierung des Herodotschen Geschichtswerkes, zu dem sein Bruder H.C.Rawlinson die bis dahin keilschriftlich verifizierten Realien beisteuerte,beschritt er neue Wege ernstzunehmender Wissenschaft gegenber zu seiner Zeitgngigen, unqualifiziert leichtfertigen Hypothesen. Sein gewonnenes Wissennutzte er zu apologetischen Zwecken. Mit dem Ausrumen aberwitziger Theorien hat

sich R. zweifellos auf dem Gebiet seriser theologischer Wissenschafthistorische Verdienste erworben, auch wenn die Weiterentwicklung derKeilschrift-Wissenschaft viele Korrekturen erzwang. In der englisch-sprachigenWelt gewann er durch seine zahlreichen Verffentlichungen groen Einflu auf denGebieten der Geschichtswissenschaft und der Theologie. Seinreligis-apologetischer Ansatz verkehrte sich jedoch in das Gegenteil, indeminzwischen die biblische Religion sich als eine unter den anderenaltorientalischen, mit der Sonderentwicklung vom Henotheismus zum Monotheismus,vom Ein-Gott zum Allein-Gott, herausgestellt hat. Auch noch jetzt htte R. aufdem Gebiet der theologischen Wissenschaft zum Ausrumen von obsoleten Theorienwie auch von Irrealismen der Dogmatik ein reiches Bettigungsfeld.Werke: Gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder H.C.
