I won’t go into all the details here, but after missing the Jan-Feb newsletter, our 1st general meeting and the March yard sale maps, I think we’re back on track starting with this March – April issue and the March 17th meeting, and looking forward to a very bright and prosperous rest of the year. We currently have more residents/students in the CONA Leadership classes than ever before, insuring us very knowledgeable people to help keep your neighborhood moving forward in the future. Hopefully, some new faces can “crack the whip” and devote more time to keep our newsletter, advertising, special events, board and regular meetings up to date and running smoother than Donna and I can at this point. CANDLE THANK YOUBy Donna Hoover

We want to thank all our distributors who work hard every year to make our luminaries so beautiful. Marc

& Carrie Plotnick, Don Gilbert, Kierstyn Hensley and her group of helpers, Terri Hammer, Debby, Lance & Emily

Obst, Sheryl Spencer, Kim Tripplet, Sandy Mitchell, Karen Smith, Roger Eitner, Mary & Mike Reed, Don Steer, Steve & Kathy Crow, Denise Spornraft & Diane Croft, Wayne & Ingrid Busselle, Stephanie & Lynn Boyle, Tammy Dowd & Frank & Joanna Christalli, and anyone else I missed.

This year we’d like to offer a special thanks to Don Steer who will be retiring his route after 17 years of dedication selling candles on the 79th Ave N area. Kathy Crow will be taking over Don’s route which leaves a opening for a volun-teer to handle 78th Ave N/NE and 79th Ave NE route. If you are interested to help on next year’s route, please call Jean Tyack 727-576-9300.

Prez Dave adds: The RBCA also wants to give Jean Ty-ack a REALLY BIG THANK YOU for all the many years she has worked so hard to organize our longest running tra-dition.

2015 CHRISTMAS DISPLAY WINNER

We want to congratulate David, Jodie, Danier and Dawson Snyder at 234 81st Ave N with a $50 Babalu’s gift certificate for being chosen as the

RBCA’s 2015 Best Christmas Yard Display by Jeff & Jodie Gilbert, last year’s winners. The pictures really don’t do the display or the music any justice.

The Snyder’s will be picking the winner for 2016 on December 23rd. In the future, since the reward comes out of RBCA funds, you must be a paid member

of the RBCA, and you can only win once every 5 years to give others an opportunity to compete. It must have been hard to pick a winner because we had some really good and inventive displays in 2015.

SPRING YARD SALEMarch 4, 5 & 6

The RBCA Spring Yard Sale is always the 1st weekend in March. The RBCA will place Ads in the St Pete Times,

The Flyer, Neighborhood News, and a few Face book pages. We will also put up the large board signs on 4th Street N and 83rd Avenue with a few interior signs.

We didn’t have time this yard sale for the maps, but in the future: The signs are placed based on the people who call in their locations to be placed on the yard sale maps which are copied and given out at all advertised locations. This helps

to let people know the sales are from 98th Ave N south to 78th Ave N and 83rd Ave N to Orient Way and Macoma Dr.

Since the expenses are paid by RBCA funds, you must be a paid RBCA member to be placed on the maps. (or you can join the RBCA before the map deadline) Dues are $10 per calendar year January to December. This year’s membership cards start with the number 16 ###. There is a membership application on the back of this newsletter.________________________________________________

NEIGHBORLY ADVICESAFETY – Neighborhoods where

people know one another tend to be safer than those where people are strangers. Friendly neighbors might feel more comfortable notifying authorities if they see suspicious activity. Consider: Keeping an eye on your neighbor’s house while they are out of town.

SHARING – Tight-knit neighbors are more likely to share resources, whether it’s a hammer or extra goodies from the garden. Consider: Helping your elderly neighbors with yard work or task around the house.

SOCIAL SUPPORT – People with strong social ties are not only happier, they also tend to live longer. Consider: Organizing a block party or potluck dinner to get to know your neighbors. Smiling and waving at your neighbors when they pass by your house.

COYOTESIN THE ‘HOOD

By Dave Hoover

Donna & I attended an excellent presentation about Coyotes.

We will be trying to get that speaker to one of our upcoming meetings.

In short, Coyotes are here to stay. You have to harass them, correctly, to

get them to leave your area. One of the Coyotes reproduction quirks is that the population can be controlled based on the amount of food available to them in the area. Coyotes’ are known to get into trash cans, eat rodents, and eat any pet food, (and the pets) that you leave outside, usually after dusk into the ear-ly morning hours.

RIVIERA BAY PARKCOMMUNITY GARDEN

By Donna Hoover

When designing Riviera Bay Park,

we heard from many in the neighborhood that they really wanted a Community Flower Garden and that they were willing to help with the upkeep. The city agreed to install the garden and provide water and mulch for it if we would maintain it. We ended up also donating $1,000 to the city toward installing this garden, but so far, a lot of the people that said they wanted this garden haven’t been around to help weed or spread mulch whenever we schedule it, although we’ve heard from a lot of people that say they stop by and pull weeds whenever they get the chance. We are letting you know as early as possible that we are scheduling 4 dates to plant additional plants (if needed), dead head the rose bushes, and pull weeds.

One of our Carefest projects in September will be to re-

mulch the Garden. Please mark your calendars March 19, May 14, July 16, & Sept 24 to come out and help us. We also need to keep a record of volunteer hours for the City so please let me know if you have worked in the garden and for how long you worked.

If you have plants you would like to donate to the garden, we are looking for ones that attract birds and butterflies, without taking over the garden. Please email or call me if you can help. Donna Hoover at 727-579-3644 or [email protected]_____________________________________

RIVIERA BAY PARKCHANGES

If you have been by the park lately you have seen some construction going on. We are pleased to inform you

that we will be getting a restroom at the park. Details are still being ironed out, but we have been told the rest room will only be open during daylight hours with an automatic locking system at night. We are glad to see so many people enjoying this park. If you haven’t had a chance to go by and check it out you should. Earlier this year we had a shade cover installed over the exercise equipment making it much easier to work out on the units in the heat of the day.

83RD AVE ADOPT A MILEBy Donna Hoover

We are once again entering into a 2 year contract

with Keep Pinellas Beautiful’s - Adopt-A-Mile program to adopt 83rd Ave N/NE from 4th St N to the San Martin Bridge. We clean that mile 4 times a year. The

dates for 2016 are April 9th, June 11, Aug 20 & Nov 5th.We meet at the St Pete Presbyterian Church southwest

corner of the parking lot at 9 AM. The RBCA will provide the trash bags, pickers, gloves and water and depending on the number of volunteers, we can normally do this in less than an hour. Please mark your calendars now and come join us for a little exercise and help us keep your neighborhood beautiful. Even if you can’t join us on 83rd Avenue, and a lot of people already do this, please take a trash bag with you if you walk the neighborhood and pick-up the trash you come across. If we all do a little, we can accomplish a lot.

CAREFEST USA – Sept 24thNeighbor helping Neighbor

This year we are looking for a local company who would like to volunteer their services to help a RBCA family who

is in need of a new roof and a few other home improvements. If anyone in the neighborhood has a construction company or roofing business, or knows someone that does, that would be willing to donate their time or material or expertise, please contact Dave or Donna at 727-579-3644.

We will also be weeding and mulching the Riviera Bay Park Garden that day with the volunteers who are better suited for this type of project instead of the above construction project.
