Product Description 4 (19)

1 IntroductionThe purpose of this document is to describe RBS 2108 that is a main remote RBS, which can be configured with one main unit (MU) and up to three radio units.

The radio unit can be based on sTRU (defined as C-RRU), developed for P-GSM 900, or based on dTRU (defined as N-RRU), developed for both P-GSM 900 and GSM 1800.

Up to three RRUs (either C-RRU or N-RRU) can be configured to one MU.

1.1 A new powerful member of the RBS 2000 familyThe RBS 2108 is a new member of the highly successful RBS 2000 family. This guarantees a world-class supply flow, fast installation and commissioning, reliable operation & maintenance

The RBS 2108 is an outdoor macro base station supporting up to six TRX with Remote Radio Unit N (RRU-N) or up to three TRX with Remote Radio Unit C (RRU-N). RBS 2108 cabinet can be installed on a wall, mast or pole.

RBS 2108 will be available for following frequencies:

Frequency

RRU type

P-GSM 900

RRU-C and RRU-N

GSM 1800

RRU-N

At the moment RBS 2108 is not planned to be developed for GSM 800 or GSM 1900. Depending on market demand it might however be possible to develop it for GSM 800 and/or GSM 1900.

1.2 RBS 2108 – Coverage with a cost-effective RBSEricsson’s GSM radio base station RBS 2108 facilitates coverage extension with a cost-effective low- and medium capacity RBS.

The RBS 2108 is optimised for the low capacity rural applications but can also be used for indoor coverage in e.g. shopping malls and offices with a main unit centralised in e.g. the cellar and distributed radio units for each floor or corridor.

For meeting the radio network requirements RBS 2108 comes in different configurations.

The MU and RRU and powered by 110-270 VAC. Optional Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) can be connected to the MU.

The silent operation of RBS 2108 is an important factor when obtaining site permission. Base-stations equipped with cooling fans make it harder to find sites in public places due to high noise levels produced by these base-stations. The fact that RBS 2108 is totally silent also reduces the risk of vandalism, as the site is less likely to attract attention from miscreants. RBS 2108 main features are:

Instant capacity up to 6 TRX (one main unit and three radio units) if using RRU-N or up to 3 TRX (one main unit and three radio units) if using RRU-C

Output power 43 dBm/carrier for RRU-N and 42 dBm for RRU-C Ready for EDGE and GPRS (CS-1 to CS-4) on all TRX Small and discreet design for both outdoor and indoor environmental Totally silent Temperature range:

MU: -33C to +50C RRU-N: -33C to +50C RRU-C: -33C to +45C

Easy and fast to install Modular building practise Integrated Transmission Interface Module for E1 SW support in BSS R? and BTS R? is required

2 RBS 2108 ArchitectureRBS 2108 is physically divided into two major units; MU (Main Unit) and remote radio unit. The remote radio unit can be either RRU-N (2 TRX) or RRU-C (1 TRX).Up to three remote units (either RRU-C or RRU-N) can be connected to one MU.RRU-C and RRU-N cannot be connected at the same time to the MU. However it is possible to start with RRU-C and expand when capacity need is increasing if required (or vice versa). The small size of RBS 2108 eases site acquisition and the modular building practice allows for a fast and easy installation. The MU cabinet is equipped with external interfaces, such as the Abis interface towards the BSC. The RBS 2108 include: Main Unit (MU), Remote Radio Unit (RRU-C or RRU-N) Sunshield Optical Y-link fibre

Battery backup is available in an optional cabinet. There is two different battery back-ups supported:

1. UPS-S. UPS-S provides a short time battery back up for about 5-10 minutes. UPS-S is especially designed for RBS 2108 installed in e.g. shopping malls, airports where power failure is only short and it takes only a few minutes until a local generator has been started. UPS-S can only be installed indoor. UPS-S is prepared for transmission equipment (3 U). The UPS-S can be used either when using RRU-N or when using RRU-C.

2. UPS-N . UPS-N provides a long time battery back up for about 4 or 8 hours battery back for a RBS 2108 installed with RRU-N. Battery back-up time is chosen depending on number of batteries. UPS-N can only be installed in- and outdoor. UPS-N is prepared for transmission equipment (3 U).

3. UPS-C. UPS-C provides a long time battery back up for about 4 or 8 hours battery back for a RBS 2108 installed with RRU-C. Battery back-up time is chosen depending on number of batteries. UPS-C can only be installed in- and outdoor. UPS-C is prepared for transmission equipment (3 U).

Both back-up solutions has some common feature:

1. Prepared for 3 U transmission

2. Battery test

3. Priority power to transmission. If power in the UPS is below a specific level, power to transmission (or other external equipment) is prioritised before MU

4.8 External AlarmsRBS 2108 provides connections for four external alarms. The external alarms are defined by the customer and are reported to the BSC via LAPD signalling on the A-bis O&M interface. The external alarms are defined by using the Operation and Maintenance Terminal (OMT) or the Remote OMT. The external device sets the alarm by either an open or closed condition.

4.9 Transmission

LAPD concentration and LAPD multiplexing can be used to increase the transmission resource efficiency.

E1 120 Ohm is connected to the RBS 2108 cabinet via a 15-pin DSUB connector. E1/75 Ohm is connected to the RBS 2108 via an optional adapter cable that includes an impedance converter with BNC connectors.

E1/G.703 offer multi vendor compatibility on the transmission level. E1/120 Ohm transmission support Long Haul. The long haul feature allows for 30 dB loss and a more cost efficient transmission network configuration. Normally E1/G.703 only offer short haul interfaces, enabling distances up to 6 dB loss.

Coaxial connection (75 Ohm) is only available for E1 operation and does not support long haul. The distance allowed between units is determined by the cable loss, according to the 6 dB receiver sensitivity specified in G.703.

4.10 Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)????

All RBS 2108 models fulfils the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) requirements according to:

ETS 300 342-2, the BTS product standard, in line with the European EMC Directive 89/336/EEC.
