El participio presenteThe present participle conveys a sense ofongoing action. To form the present participleadd -ando to the stem of -ar verbs and -iendo to the stem of -er and -ir verbs.
• Verbs that have irregular third personforms in the preterite undergo the samechange in the present participle.
• The verbs ir and oír and verbs ending in -aer, -eer, and -uir have present participles thatend in -yendo.
• The present participle is used together with aform of estar to form the progressive tense:
¡No me molestes! Estoy leyendo.Estábamos durmiendo cuando llamaste.
• Reflexive or object pronouns can be placedbefore the form of estar, or they can beattached to the end of the present participle. If they are attached to the presentparticiple, a written accent is needed.

Teacher-to-TeacherRemind students that Spanish speakers use thepresent progressive in slightly differentsituations than do English speakers. Unless theaction is happening right at the moment,Spanish speakers generally use the simplepresent tense. However, to emphasize that an
action is taking place now, the presentprogressive can be used. Many English speakerstend to overuse the present progressive whenspeaking Spanish. Encourage students to avoidthis habit and use the simple present.

To form the present perfect tense, combine the present tense of the verb haber with a past participle.

To form the past participle of a verb, add -ado to the stem of -ar verbs and -ido to the stem of -er and -ir verbs.
hablar ➞ hablado comer ➞ comido vivir ➞ vivido
Some verbs that have a double vowel in the infinitive (except for ui) require an accent mark on the í inthe past participle.
caer ➞ caído oír ➞ oído
Many Spanish verbs have irregular past participles:
abrir ➞ abierto morir ➞ muerto romper ➞ rotodecir ➞ dicho poner ➞ puesto ser ➞ sidoescribir ➞ escrito resolver ➞ resuelto ver ➞ visto
When using the present perfect tense, place negative words, object pronouns and reflexive pronouns beforethe form of haber.
No he repartido las flores.Mi profesora me ha escrito un poema.El dueño se ha ido temprano a la oficina.

To refer to an idea, or something that has not been identified, we use the demonstrative pronouns esto, eso, or aquello.
Review
Teacher-to-TeacherBuilding on activities within the same context,as in the first three activity suggestions on thisTeacher’s Edition page, is an excellent way toclarify the meaning of verb tenses and moodsand show how they interrelate.
243
El pluscuamperfecto: Students can use thesentences they wrote in the previousactivity. This time, listeners add a factabout what had happened previously:Hemos ganado el partido de básquetbolcontra Wilford Heights. Antes no habíamosganado ni un solo partido.
El presente perfecto del subjuntivo: Havestudents continue using the same contextsfrom the previous two activities. This time, they use Ojalá que and the present perfectsubjunctive to make an additionalstatement: Hemos ganado el partido debásquetbol contra Wilford Heights. Antesno habíamos ganado ni un solo partido.Ojalá que nuestro equipo se hayaentrenado mejor y no haya sido sólosuerte.
Los adjetivos y los pronombres demostra-tivos: Have partners choose three objectsto refer to. Pairs take turns giving demon-strations using the demonstrativeadjectives and pronouns. They place theobjects around the room, stand at oppositeends, and make sentences: Estas llaves (lasque están aquí cerca de mí) son mías. Ésas(las que están cerca de ti)…
PortfolioInvite students to review the activities theycompleted in this chapter, includingwritten reports, posters or other visuals, tapes of oral presentations, and otherprojects.
