He was born in 1945. After jumping into the publishing industry after joining the Dong-A Daily News as a reporter where he worked from 1968 to 1975, he
established the Hangilsa in 1976. Even when he is in his 70s today, he continues to engage in activities to publicize the importance of cultural contents with

Q. We would like to hear about your view of books as a pub-
lisher with over 40 year long experience.
Today, the center of culture is the book. However, people in the modern age
do not read books often. In particular, we Koreans are even planning to make
schools without book bags. This is like trying to make cars without engine, and it
is a reckless plan that entails cultivating individuals with robot-like character who
cannot think from different angles. In particular, rapid advancement of the Internet
and digital devices as well as popular media, is preventing people from reading
in this season of reading, the autumn. Instead, they use the smart phone or pad
to play games, or to take a look at the light, easy to read magazines, taking a
look at the pictures or photographs that grab onto the attention just for a moment
via the medium called e-book. However, no matter how the media advances,
nothing compares to the power of a book, and the beautiful tactile feel one gets
while shuffling to the next page with the fingertips. In particular, unlike the regular
magazines, liberal arts related books that govern the theories and ideologies if a
nation or individual, posing questions such as, Who am I? and What kind of life
do I have to lead? are worthy of reading many times while keeping them nearby,
to re-think the meaning, compared to e-media.
Q. Please introduce the Asian culture hub city formation project
and explain to us about its significant. Moreover, we are curious
about how Gwangju ended up standing up in the pivotal point
of this initiative.
Now, culture and art are essentials and requirements for life. Human beings can

lead proper and happy life with culture and art. Asian Culture Complex will serve
as the basis for creating and communicating the culture and art in Asia with new
awareness. As the Asian civilization that has long tradition and history meet with
the great cultures and arts that are created by the civilization, and while they hold
dialogue together, they are bound to create even more beautiful and grandeur
Asian culture and arts. Likewise, Gwangju, Asian culture hub city is to encourage
this initiative.
Gwangju is the fiercest root of the democratic movement in Korea. Culture and
art are the spirits and the theories that enable genuine form of democracy. As it
will turn into the new production base for Asian culture and art, Gwangju will pur-
sue after the actual democracy in
Asia, while serving as the sym-
bol of democracy in Asia. Asian
Culture Complex is the base for
culture and art for the Asians, and
it will serve as the base for dis-
seminating the Asian cultural and
art contents to the world.
Q. What do you think
about the power of the
Asian culture and what do
you expect its influence to
be?
Asia has long tradition of culture
and art. Asians are cultural and
artistic, more so than any other
people. Asians are basically art-
ists. When the various ethnic
groups in Asia unite together with
culture and art, cultural and ar-
tistic creations of the new era will
be unfolded energetically, which in turn will impress the entire world. Gwangju will
become the Asian cultural hub city, and Asian Culture Complex will be built in
Gwangju, but those facilities and spaces are open to the Asians and people in the
world. This is a program that enables Asia to become one with culture and art, and
that is created along with Asians.
Q. We understand that you are uncovering many stories that
embrace the sentiment of Asians as the Chairman of the Asia
Storytelling Committee. Please introduce the role of the commit-
tee when it comes to the Asian cultural hub city project and the
set of projects that are underway.
Each of the ethnic groups in Asia has many beautiful, magnificent stories. The life
of Asians is the life of stories. The Storytelling Committee is committed to the un-
covering of the beautiful and unique stories of each of the ethnic groups in Asia to
communicate them, in order to create even more beautiful and richer stories. It is
possible to create culture and art of new level with the stories of each of the ethnic
groups in Asia. Stories are the source of energy that enables happy life.
Asia Storytelling Committee supplies the story culture, which is a great cultural
heritage of the humankind, and story art to the people of today. As such, it seeks

to create beautiful Asia and world. Stories told by each of the ethnic groups in the
world are not only just and beautiful, but they also pursue after peace. Storytelling
Committees story related project entails building a just and peaceful community of
the humankind in Asia and entire world.
Q. The stories of Asia that are born again as cultural contents.
Please tell us their attractiveness and potential.
Cultural art contents go beyond genre classification. That is, stories turn into paint-
ings, while paintings turn into stories. Songs become films and dramas. These once
again get integrated. Asias stories will spread to diverse genres going forth. Cultural
art contents will indeed become the source of greater and more beautiful economic
wealth that will make human beings, human being-like. Cultural art contents are
indeed the most beautiful energy of life.
Q. Lastly, please share your aspiration and plan as the Chairman
of the committee.
I am a publisher. Even today, I am making a book with utmost devotion. Books are
the starting point and the culmination of all the cultural and arts related elements.
Books are essential for our life. What is even more important that the social justice
that everyone cries out for is the question on how I will live in a just manner? All
the programs and contents that are carried out at the Asian Culture Complex turn
into books. Likewise, their spirit and truth are preserved permanently, and they are
spread out and handed down going beyond time and space. Power of culture
and art existed in the form of books. As such, they become even grander and
beautiful culture and art. As I mentioned at the beginning of this interview, these
days, Korea neglects books. My life-long wish is to develop the infra that can make
good books steadily by building streets of book stores and libraries in all corners
of Korea, starting from the book festival started at the Haeiri Town in Paju and the
book street formation project.
