As Tamils all over the diaspora gathered in hundreds to mark the 5th year remembrance of the Mullivaikaal massacre of May 2009, an overwhelming growth in the numbers gathered at the University of Jaffna, in the homeland, to remember and pay respects to the war dead could be witnessed.

AmbitiousAmbitious efforts were made by the Sri Lankan military to suppress anyone who attempted to remember the war dead, including Tamil students, academics and even democratically elected political representatives of the Tamils. But, despite this trauma and intimidation caused by the Sri Lankan state the University students and the academics patriotically commemorated the remembrance of the Mullivaikal Massacre. TamilTamil politicians, including Northern Provincial Council member Ms Ananthi Sasitharan, were blocked by the Sri Lankan police from marking the remembrance. In addition, students received threatening messages from anonymous sources for holding the remembrance, as a result from which the Jaffna University Society declared a two-day strike.

As the fight against the oppression took place through various means, such as strikes and protests, in the homeland, what could be observed in the diaspora was something overpowering. Just days after the news of the threat messages and strike by Jaffna University students released, on 23rd May 2014 from 7pm (GMT), Twitter was filled with tweets supporting the students in the homeland. Using the hashtag ‘#HandsOffJaffnaUni’,‘#HandsOffJaffnaUni’, Tamils all over the world and the diaspora tweeted showing anger, frustration as well as standing in solidarity with the youth in the homeland.

What started off as a small awareness campaign initiative went onto becoming something that illustrated the very unity between Tamils from the homeland, diaspora and elsewhere on the fight to freedom. Each tweet was clear and expressive showing not only emotions but also hope. The Eelam Tamils all over the world showed an unbreakable unity in the thirst for freedom and the fight against the genocide by the Sri Lankan state.state.

Individuals, Eelam Tamil youth, activists as well as Tamil organisations joined in from around the world as the hour went on. Tweets can be seen to have openly targeted Western diplomats, such as Mr David Cameron, Ms Navanethem Pillay and William Hague, seeking to find a response to the ongoing genocide.

TweetsTweets below demonstrate a small proportion of what was witnessed on twitter tonight.

“We are in solidarity with our brothers and sisters. Students united can never be defeated #HandsOffJaffnaUni”

“We“We will stand in solidarity with the #Tamils in our homeland until our last breath to fight Sri Lankan state terrorism #HandsOffJaffnaUni’

“Rise above all forms of oppression. Students united will never be defeated. #HandsOffJaffnaUni” – I stand in solidarity!”

WhyWhy cannot #Tamils mourn for their loved ones? Intimidation harassment death threats, the price they pay #HandsOffJaffnaUni @David_Cameron”

Brothers and sisters all around the world wont stop fighting ..this oppression needs to end #HandsOffJaffnaUni”

ThisThis collective uprise emphasised the clear unified connection between the Eelam Tamils in the homeland and those in the diaspora as well as showing the unified path in reaching the solution for freedom. It illustrates that oppression cannot divert or stop the struggle for an independent state of Tamil Eelam.

Sports and politics is inter-linked and indivisible. Sports has been used by many genocidal regimes to cover up the atrocities they have committed , whilst it has also been used as a tool by the International Community to end human rights abuses, achieve justice and create political solutions to decades long conflicts. Sri Lanka continues to use cricket to hide the genocide of Eelam Tamils which has been going on for over six decades.

TheThe England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) took a lead in boycotting Zimbabwe over President Robert Mugabe's human rights abuses, which put huge pressure on Mr. Mugabe to practise rule of law and democracy.

The systematic attack on Tamils is never ending, evidence of Tamil genocide is mounting, the United Nations has confirmed that the Sri Lankan army systematically targeted hospitals and Tamil civilians during the end of the war in 2009. Prime Minister David Cameron, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay and many other leaders called for an international independent inquiry on atrocities committed but Sri Lanka continuously dismissed the call for any such inquiry.

STUDENTS UPRISING DAY 2014

MarkingMarking Students’ uprising day every year, where we remember and commemorate the anniversary of Ponnuthurai Sivakumaran Anna is an event holding a great significance in the Eelam Tamil nation’s struggle for self-determination. His commitment, courage and firm determination to fight for the national liberation struggle uncompromisingly continues to inspire the TamilTamil youth of today. On this day, as we take a moment to pay respects to P. Sivakumaran Anna, we the Tamil Youth Organisation also take a moment to reaffirm our goals and aims as a representative of the Eelam Tamil youth around the world.

The constant attack on students and youth of Tamil Eelam plays an important part in the systematic approach to genocide on the Eelam Tamil nation perpetrated by the Sri Lankan state. The Eelam youth have witnessed both the mental and physical element of the crime of genocide throughout the struggle, since the independence of Sri Lanka in 1948. It is said and knownknown that targeting the youth is in effect targeting the people of tomorrow and thus, it is a direct attack on the future of the nation itself. It shows the intent of the state to destroy the nation of Eelam Tamils.

The system of standardisation of marks introduced in 1971 as a way of controlling the admissions to the universities is a clear example of the intent to completely divert the future generations of the Eelam Tamil nation. The qualifying mark for the admissions for the Sinhalese was lowered whilst keeping it high for the Tamils, whereby discriminating against the Tamil studentsstudents and intentionally decreasing the percentage of Tamil youth entering university education. These consistent discriminative policies as well as the persistent state-sponsored violence on the nation, forced the youth to take the path of an armed struggle to overcome the oppression faced.

Student movements have continued to play a significant role in the national liberation struggle of the Eelam Tamil nation

The continued targeting of the youth intensified during the wartime period. The shelling of schools, abductions, rape, killing and torture of the youth became a daily process for the Eelam Tamils facing genocide. The Sencholai massacre, an intended bombing of an orphanage in Vanni and the Trincomalee massacre, where five high school studentsstudents were shot dead, are both examples of the extreme attacks that were faced during this period.

STUDENTS UPRISING DAY 2014

The acts of genocide of the Sri Lankan state faced by the nation, since 1948, are not a lost soul after the supposed ‘end’ of the war. The face of genocide has taken a different formation in this post-2009 era, however the motive and the intent to completely destruct the nation of Eelam Tamils on the island still stands firm. Rape, torture, abduction, land grabs as well as attacks on the students (apparent through the recent attacks on Jaffna and Eastern University students) are an unceasing process even today;

TheThe process of genocide is hidden in the façade of ‘reconciliation’ and ‘united-Sri Lanka’ – an agenda that is also promoted by the international community. Student movements have continued to play a significant role in the national liberation struggle of the Eelam Tamil nation. In fact, it can be evidently said that the national struggle for the right to self-determination of the homeland has fomented the youth movement to rise considerably. The history of our national struggle has taught us enough about the importance of the involvement of the youth. Thus, on this day, as we pay our respects to an important figure in the youth involvement, it is important that we reaffirm our political stand as the youth of today.involvement, it is important that we reaffirm our political stand as the youth of today. We, the Tamil Youth Organisations, being the representatives of the Tamil youth in the diaspora:

1. Demand the facilitation of a UN monitored referendum among the Eelam Tamils, recognising the sovereign nationhood, right to self-determination and the territorial integrity of the historical homeland of the Eelam Tamils in the north and east of Sri Lanka.

2.2. Demand an independent, international investigation on war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes of genocide perpetrated by the Sri Lankan state on the Eelam Tamil nation, since 1948.

3. Reiterate that we will stand firm on our political aspirations as determined in the Vaddukoddai Resolution of 1976 and the Thimphu Declaration of 1985, in our fight against the genocide.

4.4. Reaffirm that we will continue to voice against the genocide faced

It is that time of the year again; it is that time when there are so many emotions going through me. So much anger, grief and frustration because of the lack of justice. I see it in every single Tamil friend of mine, I see it in my close family. The tears in their eyes. Mostly from young people that were not even born in 1983, including myself. Where is this feeling comingcoming from? What happened during Black July? And the final question – why has justice not been served?

As a young Tamil living in the UK I have everything, I have more than what I need but my blood boils when I think about all I have lost to be in the position that I am in. The lives of my family that I lost in the process.

I could have been that Tamil girl in Sri Lanka that was crying to be alive, I could have been that girl who was screaming out asking not to be raped. I was one of the many lucky ones (or the unlucky ones as I continue to witness these brutalities and there is still no justice) but we should never forget that it could have been us suffering at the hands of the Sri Lankan state.

DuringDuring Black July, the Eelam Tamils including children were targeted, they were being murdered and their homes were

According to the government it started with 13 soldiers being murdered by the LTTE on 23rd July however there had been many previous encounters between the army and the LTTE. The event was affecting the economic, social and political strength of the Tamils which suggests it was a pre-planned, genocidal pogrom. The mob had a detailed list of TamilsTamils in every area which was provided from someone who had access to these details. The whole massacre occurred mainly within 7 days, 23rd July – 30th July.

Vavuniya, Mannar and Trincomalee were firstly affected with the deprivation of possessions among Tamils. Businesses were then destroyed and Tamil homes were set ablaze. They were searching the streets for Tamils and when found they were stripped, killed and burned alive. Survivors state that policemen and soldiers witnessed the massacremassacre and even waved at the mob. The president instigated a curfew late afternoon on 25th July to blackout any media coverage. Tamil political prisoners who were on trial under the Prevention of Terrorism Act were killed by Sinhalese prisoners who were aided by the prison officers.

On 26th July the government put strict censorship on media and the International airport of Colombo was closed proving the government’s involvement. On July 28th the President appeared only to state that anyone supporting separatism would lose their “civic rights” as he believed this was now the reason behind the pogrom. On 29th July Tamils in ColomboColombo started evacuating to Jaffna and on 30th July the violence was slowly reduced leaving Tamils without food and shelter. The aftermath of the event was the fear among Tamils that led to the necessity of fleeing the country.

WritingWriting this article brings tears to my eyes and an ache in my chest. Reading and thinking about the brutality that occurred makes me question my belief in humanity. Every July since 1983 we remember those lives that were lost, the humiliation they had faced and the pain they went through. But have we gained justice? No. I do not know why it has not been served asas the evidence has been provided. History has only repeated itself and is continuing to repeat itself; May 2009 occurred only recently where we again lost many lives. I believe the only solution for this Genocide is to provide us with the independence that we rightly deserve, Tamil Eelam.
