SuccessMaker Reading blends research-based techniques to help schools
meet the growing pressure to deliver reading results. Reading passages
were written and reviewed using the Lexile Framework ,® which matches
reader ability and text difficulty in a scientific approach supported by
over 20 years of continuing research. Lexile leveling is based on a formula
that takes into account syntax and semantic complexity by calculating
word frequency and sentence length. As a student works through each
benchmark, the content becomes increasingly difficult. The result is a
thorough, skills-sensitive approach to reading that inspires students and
facilitates effective instruction.
The BasicsSuccessMaker Reading is an interactive multimedia course designed to
provide supplemental instruction and practice in essential and critical
reading skills in Grades K–5.
The ContentsSuccessMaker Reading integrates instruction, practice, and assessment
across six strands:
• Phonological Awareness
• Phonics
• Fluency
• Vocabulary
• Comprehension
• Concepts of Print (K-1)
The OrganizationReading lessons include the following components:
• Focused instructional video or animation
• An engaging fiction or nonfiction text with audio support
• Illustrated graphics and instructional video clips
• Interactive independent skills practice
• Print partners that provide homework or offline practice and an
opportunity for open-ended, written responses
The PedagogyIn Grades K and 1, all students are placed at the beginning of their
respective grade levels. In Grades 2–5, an initial assessment determines
the ideal instructional level for each student. Students are placed in the
course either at grade level, or in acceleration, review, or remediation
bundles depending on their performance in the reading placement
test. During the SuccessMaker Reading instruction, motion takes over
to present appropriate content based on individual student responses.
• Sequential ordering follows typical basal progression aligned to
grade-level expectations.
• Additional personalized support is provided when threshold scores
are not met.
• Tomaintain proficiency levels, specific learning objectives are re-introduced
in the sequence to provide students with additional practice.
The standard path of the lesson-based instruction is presented in a
carefully articulated sequence designed to provide the most essential
instruction, practice, and assessment for developing readers. For
students who require additional support outside the core sequence,
the following motion elements may be triggered:
• Prerequisites - Triggered by performance that falls below expectations.
• Review –When a student performswell in a skill but has not yet achieved
mastery, repeated instruction, practice, and assessment are warranted.
These will appear as practice rounds at the end of each unit.
•Retention – Some skills warrant repeated instruction for the majority
of students. In SuccessMaker Reading, students may experience
selected content again as reinforcement for a given skill.
• Delayed Presentation –When a student has difficulty on a particular
skill, it is sometimes helpful to delay additional instruction and repeated
practice. The student may benefit from additional classroom instruction
or need time to process the information presented.
• Acceleration - Supports students who are performing at a high
rate of success.
All support elements allow for differentiating and individualizing
instruction according to each student’s needs.

By eliminating the need for guesswork, SuccessMaker makes classroom
time more productive. The program interacts with each learner with
specificity and allows individualized instruction to meet the wide
variety of learning styles inherent in any classroom.
Initial PlacementAutomatic initial placement starts each learner at the appropriate level
within the courseware. As students answer an initial set of questions,
SuccessMaker analyzes their responses and determines the appropriate
instructional starting level. Then SuccessMaker motion progresses
them through differentiated instruction. From the start, students
experience content appropriate to their level and pace of learning,
which helps them gain confidence.
Answer Pattern ResponseTo determine skill mastery, SuccessMaker analyzes the pattern of a
student’s answers, not just the percentage of correct answers. Once
a skill is mastered, the student will continue to progress through the
course and the skill will be re-introduced periodically for retention.
In the example above, Student B was able to grasp the concept on the
5th exposure. Once the concept was understood, the student was able
to apply this knowledge repeatedly, thus demonstrating skill mastery.
Intelligent TutorIf a student has difficulty with an objective, SuccessMaker’s Intelligent
Tutor launches automatically. This tool combines sequential practice,
prerequisite instruction, and individual tutorial assistance to provide
multiple opportunities to master the objective.

Teacher Dashboard/Groups TabSuccessMaker’s Learning Management System (LMS) is displayed in an
intuitive dashboard that makes individual and class data easy to access
and analyze. With pinpoint accuracy, educators can gauge
individual or overall performance without using guesswork.
The color-coded proficiency settings are configurable to
align with local expectations for student performance. In
this case, the district has labeled four settings to reflect
advanced, proficient, basic, and below basic. In addition to
the visual displays of data, an “alerts tab” is provided
through which educators will be notified when students
require extra assistance.
Teacher Dashboard/Student TabThe teacher sees high-level performance information for
each assignment at a glance. When the cursor hovers over
a student’s Average Score, additional information can be
accessed easily with a click to pinpoint areas of mastery or
weakness on specific objectives or standards.
Student Details/Performance Graph TabThe teacher has the opportunity to see the last session information
for an assignment in context. The red bar indicates challenges with
a particular assignment. Clicking on the bar provides more
in-depth student information on the specific skill so that
additional support can be provided.
Student Details/Graph DetailsFrom this view, the teacher can see the student’s average performance
on a learning objective, as well as a summary of student performance
within this content area. The state standards that align to this learning
object are identified.

Pearson employs remote digital publishing to deliver scheduled updates
via automated connections.

SuccessMaker automatically provides changes as soon as they become
available. Manual or disk-based updates often go undone. Your
partnership with Pearson assures you that students and teachers
always have the current version.
Increase uptime and productivity.Site administrators are relieved of the effort of manual updates.
Because updates can be configured to happen during the hours
when students are not using the system, it remains readily available
to teachers and students during regular classroom hours.
The need for tech support is reducedto the minimum.Updates are designed to happen automatically. There’s no waiting for
disks or the arrival of a field engineer.
