HKU Master of Urban Design Thesis Review 2

Dr. Peter Cookson Smith, Immediate Past President, Mr. PY Tam, Hon. Secretary and Mr. Barry Wilson,

Council Member were invited to the HKU Master of Urban Design Thesis Review 2 on 15 July 2017.

HKDC – Dinner on 25 July 2017

Prof. Stephen Tang, President was invited to attend the Dinner hosted by Hong Kong Design Centre on

25 July 2017.

HKU DUPAD Degree Show 2016-2017

Prof. Stephen Tang, President and the Reviewers Mr. Joel Chan, Hon. Treasurer, Mr. PY Tam, Hon.

Secretary and Mr. Barry Wilson, Council Member were invited to attend the Opening Reception of the

DUPAD Degree Show of the Master of Urban Design, Master of Science (Urban Planning), and BA

(Urban Studies) programmes in the University of Hong Kong, on 28 July 2017.

With Prof. Alain Chiaradia, Programme Director of the Master of Urban Design, the University of Hong

Kong and Prof. Hendrik Tieben, Director of the M.Sc. in Urban Design program, the Chinese University

of Hong Kong.

Accreditation of Post Graduate Urban Design Courses

In the HKIUD Council meeting on 21 June 2017, a new set of HKIUD Accreditation Guidelines was

endorsed by the Council. The Membership and Education Committee representing HKIUD has conducted

several rounds of discussions with the Urban Design courses leaders of the University of Hong Kong and

the Chinese University of Hong Kong to expedite arrangements for the accreditation of the respective

post graduate Urban Design Courses in the coming academic year of 2017-2018. We expect to pass a

resolution at the coming AGM in September to amend the relevant articles in our Byelaws to reflect the

new arrangements.

Symposium on Inclusive Building Design

ArchSD Academy invited HKIUD members to Symposium on Inclusive Building Design on 3 July 2017.

Seminar on Landscape Interventions in Urban Development

The Greening, Landscape and Tree Management Section (GLTMS), Development Bureau (Works

Branch) invited HKIUD members to the Seminar on Seminar on Landscape Interventions in Urban

Development on 5 July 2017.

Press Release on the endorsement by the Executive Council on Elderly Services

Programme Plan (ESPP)

Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design issued a press release to respond to the endorsement by the

Executive Council on Elderly Services Programme Plan (ESPP).

Update from Public Affairs Committee

The Buildings Department has engaged RLP to carry out a Study to review the Building (Planning)

Regulations. A Multi-stakeholders Consultation Forum has been held in July and our representatives

have attended. Participants' views are sought with a view to help the formulation and refinement of new

additions and/or amendments to the current B(P)R. Subsequently, participating organisations are asked

to give more detailed consideration and to reply to a questionnaire before 18/8/2017. We are now inviting

PAC members to also contribute their views.

Harbourfront Commission

A new session of the Harbourfront Commission has commenced from 1 July 2017. HKIUD will continue to

be represented by Mr. Ivan Ho and Mr. P.Y. Tam this year. Ivan will also take up the workload of the HC’s

Task Forces on Harbourfront Developments on Hong Kong Island and Kai Tak and the Working Group on

the Protection of the Harbour Ordinance, while PY will take up the work of the Task Force on Kowloon,

Tsuen Wan & Kwai Tsing and the Water-land Interface. Members will be informed of issues arising from

these meetings from time to time.

Topic: Kai Tak - Urban Design adds Value

Abstract:

Kai Tak has been under the spotlight recently when record-breaking land sale prices came out one after

another. Speculations on developers’ Mainland background and strategies could no longer stand when

lately a local developer tendered and won a Kai Tak site. Then, what are the reasons behind? What

elements does Kai Tak possess that have appealed to these developers? Some say urban design clearly

plays a part. If it does, what have been painted in urban design? In this talk, different perspectives will be

drawn from speakers who have played different roles linked to Kai Tak - Current Head of Kai Tak Office,

President of HKIUD who was also the first Head of Kai Tak Office, Chairman of Kai Tak Harbourfront

Development, and a developer that won the latest land tender at Kai Tak.

Wildlife in Hong Kong - their Conservation and

Abstract

Although Hong Kong is one of the world's metropolises,

about three quarters of the land remain

countryside. Ecologically, Hong Kong has a variety of

habitats which supports a rich diversity of animals. This

walk will cover the major groups of the wild animals in

Hong Kong and the implementation of the Wild Animals

Protection Ordinance. Besides, selected cases will be

discussed to illustrate how the conservation and

management of the wild animals are achieved in the

urban areas of Hong Kong.

Call for Entry: Old Town Central Lamppost Design Competition

Organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and supported by the Hong Kong Institute of

Architects (HKIA), and the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design (HKIUD) etc, the competition invites

HKIUD and HKIA members to submit design proposals for lamppost decoration along Hollywood Road to

further promote Old Town Central (OTC). 2 design will be selected each with $150,000 prize and the

winning design will be implemented during the year end of 2017 along Hollywood Road.
