Dear Readers,

We can't seem to keep up with the changes! Early in January, I got the opportunity to attend CES' keynote speeches and panel discussions on technology changes and its transformational impact on our lives. From these discussions, I realized just how deeply our lives and businesses have been affected and will continue to be affected by the constant interruptive changes of advanced technology. The products of the future that have been displayed at CES have truly been eye opening, overwhelming and inspiring. Technology has been so deeply ingrained into our lives that it has forever transformed the way we perceive and conduct our business.

This has, however, made it harder to predict our business' growth in the years to come, especially when faced with frequent technological advancements. Now that we live in a digital era, the "cloud", mobile solutions, apps, big data, and other forms of communication will affect how much printing will be needed and also the number of supplies that will be in demand. What kind of mentality will we need to be able to capture the new waves of opportunity in our industry which can be attributed to these technological changes? How will it impact our strategies for growth? To inspire you, I would like to share a summary from the book, Ninja Innovation: The Ten Killer Strategies of the World's Most Successful Businesses, written by Gary Shapiro, President of CES. 1. Your Goal is Victory 2. Your Strike Force 3. In war, Risk Is Unavoidable 4. Prepare for Battle 5. The Art of War 6. The Ninja Code 7. Ninja Break the Rules 8. Innovate or Die 9. An Army of Ninja 10. The Shadow Warrior In the printing industry, we are most concerned about the biggest player - HP. How this giant performs in the market will not only directly impact the entire printing market, but our aftermarket performance as well. In this issue, we have included an in-depth analysis of HP's past and present, written by industry veteran, Steve Weedon. His article entitled, Did Someone Press the Self-destruct Button at HP? can be found on page 14. Although we have just celebrated the new year on the western calendar, we will be celebrating it again in February as we welcome the Chinese Spring Festival - our new year with the Spring spirit! I am here to wish our industry friends and our loyal readers a fruitful year and to always embrace the Ninja spirit!

The Managed Print Services(MPS) business strongly depends on the capacity of the printer or copier to be monitored, combined with the capabilities of the service provider to deliver supplies and service supported by the right technology. The Nubeprint Report measures to which extent the most frequent network printer and copier models are MPS-ready. The analysis is fully independent of printer and copier vendors, and is based on actual data from printer models in a live MPS environment. The graphs are self-explanatory. Narratives are provided just as guidance for a better understanding of the graphs. This report provides relevant information to printer and copier vendors, supplies manufacturers or remanufacturers, MPS service providers, future MPS providers, end-customers and in general anyone interested in getting inside information of the MPS business. The Nubeprint Report is issued every six months on the first month of each semester, in order to facilitate the most updated information and the market trend. Any related question regarding the Nubeprint report can be addressed to [email protected].

Scope and limitations of the analysis:The analysis focuses on the ability of the printer to provide sufficient data so that an advanced MPS technology can potentially drive the services. The quality of the data provided is ignored on purpose. The analysis works under the assumption that it is homogenous and accurate. Nubeprint Report does not take into consideration the technology used by the service provider to handle MPS services. Providing that the document output device facilitates sufficient data, the service provider should find the appropriate technical resources to handle its MPS service. There is a wide variety of printing technologies in the market. The analysis does not make any difference as long as the document output is homogeneous: an office printer or copier, no matter what its size is (letter, A4, A3, A0…). As a consequence, the Report includes laser printer, inkjet and solid ink printers, ribbon or large format printers. This new edition includes 38% more models from a total of 30 vendors (40% increase compared to July’s edition). 3% of models analyzed are LFP and 1% is Ribbon, from 7 different vendors.

The analysis has been performed on over 1,300 document output device models selected among the most commonly found in the office market, expanding the previous edition by 30%. New vendors

in the list are: Lanier, Lomond, Memjet, Muratec, NRG, Sato, Savin and Sindoh. The models analyzed are classified into 6 different types: monochrome printers, color pr inters, monochrome MFP (multifunctional), color MFP, large format printers (LFP) and ribbon printers. 57% of the population analyzed is MFP while 39% is printer, 3% is LFP and 1% is ribbon. Overall, 45% is color and the remaining 55% is monochrome, excluding LFP and ribbon.

Market compliance:Overall:The population analyzed shows that 29% of the models are full MPS compliant, while 32% have some major limitations, including 4% that are not compliant, meaning not being appropriate for MPS. Non-compliant models remain exceptional, and have the biggest concentration among 4 OEMs (see Figure 5). LFP and ribbon printers make the biggest contribution to non-MPS-compliant printers, as can be deducted from the Figure 4.

67% of models do require an advanced MPS management technology to compensate for the lack of the device model capability for MPS. In other words, 67% of the models analyzed do expose the MPS service provider to risks in terms of the quality of the service, profitability of the business and therefore competitiveness. These models are significantly less efficient in terms of proactively identifying their needs and the amount of resources to manage them. The customer is impacted too because he is requested to trigger any need of toner and other supplies by calling the dealer or through other manual methods. Consequently, the dealer’s infrastructure will be too big to handle all this manual work (calls, control of duplicated deliveries). According to this figure, it is understandable why most, if not all, MPS providers complain of the big infrastructure they had to build to manage their MPS contracts, as compared to

the transactional business with an equivalent size, and why yield management technology is replacing the tracking tools sold up until recently.

Per type of device:The limitations found per type of device make the single function printers as the most MPS-friendly devices: 41% are full MPS ready, compared to 23% of the color and monochrome MFP. Color devices (both MFP and single function printer) in general get the highest level of compliance with just 14% showing major limitations. Monochrome MFP gets the worst results excluding Ribbon and Large Format printers (LFP): 50% do show major limitations to MPS. The LFP not compliant ratio is 68%. It must be noted that only 41 models from 3 different vendors have been included in this report, but they all show a similar compliance. The number of Ribbon models analyzed has increased compared to the previous Nubeprint Report, and now includes 4 vendors. 58% are compliant. Each vendor result is quite different from the others.

Per vendor:The analysis per vendor shows big differences between them. In most of the cases the printer or copier model is missing a simple specific piece of data that moves the model from a full-compliant device to a medium or even a major limited device. The graph below includes the result per printer model analyzed for each vendor. The greener the bar of a vendor, the more MPS-friendly are its printers and copiers. There is no significant difference if the vendor origin is from the copier industry or printer industry.

The area of the highest MPS compliance is populated by vendors like Dell, Epson, Muratec, Oki and Samsung. The middle range is occupied by Xerox, HP, Sagem, Sindoh, Sharp, Kyocera and Lexmark. Sato gets the worst results in terms of MPS compliance of its ribbon printers. The increase of the amount of models analyzed compared to previous editions make some vendors position better or worse. As

already mentioned, the criteria chosen to include a model in the analysis is determined by the number of units found in the install base of the MPS population analyzed.

The radar graph determines how each vendor positions compared to others. The Index measures each printer model limitation based on how it influences an efficient delivery of MPS services, including the quality of the service, the control of the costs for the service provider, the possibility to generate the highest profitability, and the degree of real automation from a customer’s perspective. The closer a manufacturer index is to the centre, the more MPS-compliant its products are. The Index is only calculated for those vendors for which a sufficient number of models has been tested.

The supplies:The number of supplies, and more specifically, their diversity has a relevant impact on MPS service:

- T h e s t o c k o f supplies needed to attend to the demand is proportional to the references needed by the install base being managed;-T h e n u m b e r o f calls from customers ordering the supplies does also multiply based on the diversity of references;

-The number of cartridges that get lost (that never reach the printer) is around 7-9% of the total ordered;-The number of false alerts caused by MPS tracking systems, or requested unnecessarily by the printer user (the customer) increases in proportion to the amount of references managed.

The highest is the amount of supplies, the more complex and expensive it is to manage the printing device. The aim of this section is to provide the reader more information to value the workload that he/she should expect based on the type of population he/she is managing. In general, the amount of types of supplies increases as the volume capacity of the device goes up. The number of supplies needed in a color printer multiplies

Figure 4

Figure 6

Figure 5

Figure 7

by 3 or 4 those of a monochrome printer. If the printer is an MFP, it needs on average an extra reference as compared to a simple printer. The different technologies of the vendors have an impact on the number of supplies required for a similar product. So, while the customer perceives no significant difference between one printer model or another from two different vendors, the MPS service provider may want to analyze how the number of different supplies he/she will have to manage will contribute to generate profit, or just the opposite: to incur extra costs to manage this complexity.

The last four graphs show the average number of supplies per manufacturer depending on the type of device: color MFP, monochrome MFP, color printer and monochrome printer.

Though there is an increase of costs in managing a higher number of supplies per device, there is not a correlation between the MPS Compliant Index and the number of supplies. Therefore, the quality of the MPS service shall not be directly impacted by the complexity of managing an install base with a high diversity of supply references. There is technology in the market that handles complex automated fulfillment processes.

Conclusions:The tough competition in the market, combined with the perception that there are no relevant differences from vendor to vendor, is the cause that the bulk of the market is moving from traditional printer and copier dealers to second-player vendors that offer a better CPP (Cost Per Page) ratio. Such as for example, the case of Sindoh, who is expanding to North America with products that have been certified for MPS compliance by Nubeprint. MPS is also the vehicle used by recyclers to re-launch their sales. A more competitive CPP, combined with a quality similar to the OEM, and their contribution to reduce the environmental impact of used cartridges, are major arguments for their success. But their presence in MPS has been strongly limited up until recently due to the limitation in connectivity of recycled cartridges, which was forcing the dealers to manage the needs of supplies manually, and preventing the printer user to know the actual level. The launch of Nubeprint’s Predictability Outcome Technology has multiplied the usage of quality recycled consumables among dealers. In just one year, 73% of dealers have added at least one recycled alternative to their portfolio.

Definitions:Managed Print Service Association defines “Managed Print Services” as “the active management and optimization of document output devices and related business processes”. MPS compliant status is the ability for a document output device to be fully serviced by a service provider remotely with zero intervention from the printer or copier user. As a consequence, only network-connected models are considered. Each device is graded according to the following criteria:

• No MPS: the lack of providing relevant data makes the device model not suitable for MPS. This device model cannot be part of an MPS solution.• Major issues: the device has limitations to the extent that it produces a severe impact on cost control and therefore on the profitability of an MPS program on this printer/copier model. MPS workload full automation is not possible if just working with the model data.• Medium issues: the device has limitations to the extent that it does produce an impact on cost control, although the impact on the profitability can be limited. MPS workload automation is possible only partially if just working with the model data.• Minor issues: the device has limitations to the extent that it prevents from providing certain MPS services. But still most of the MPS workload can be managed automatically.• Full MPS compliant: the document output device model can be fully managed in an automated way for MPS. Costs and profitability are under control. Workload is fully removed (tasks can be automated).

The Challenge of Marketing to the Peripheral Asian CountriesBy Curt Keller

As an online marketer of digital print technology and consumables in the Asia-Pacific region, you are likely focused on the mega-markets such as China, India, and Japan which constitute the lion’s share of population and GDP. However, there are many countries which may not be on your marketing radar because of their relevant size. Though if you put all of them together you might have the total population and disposable income of a single Chinese province! These countries may never become a primary provider of income for your company but their needs for your products and services are just as critical as the customer in Shanghai, Mumbai, or Osaka.

1.EastTimor– With a GDP of just USD$616 million, the entire country of East Timor is dwarfed by many corporations operating in the digital print technology and consumables industry. However, their relatively tiny economic power can still represent a viable market for your offerings; as the country has just recently been established and is in a major reconstruction phase.

New businesses are popping up in the country and the governmental infrastructure is expanding by the day, so those two intertwined factors can have a considerable impact on your sales to both private and public entities. East Timor has 13 administrative districts, although one of them, Oecusse, is effectively a geographically separated enclave. The nation has a primary official European language which is rarely found in Asia (with the exception of Goa and Macau). They speak Portuguese in East Timor alongside the local Tetum language. However, one third of East Timorese understand English and it is the main language of business. With almost half of its total population of one million people still functionally illiterate and generally residing in the country’s rural districts, there is a wide gulf in East Timorese demographics and, more than in many other Asian nations, the market for digital print technology and consumables is primarily urban.

2. Bhutan – Another relative mote in the overall economic picture of the Asia-Pacific region, Bhutan’s GDP is about double that of East Timor at USD$ 1.4 billion. Much has been made of Business Week magazine’s awarding Bhutan the title of The Happiest Country in Asia, an extension of the country’s long-standing reputation as the Last Shangri-La, stretching back to the times when Bhutan was part of the British Empire as an Indian Princely State.

However there is more to Bhutan’s identity than a national commitment to maintain its unique unspoiled natural ecosystems and distinct cultural heritage. The exportation of the country’s generous hydroelectric resource is a primary source of the country’s economic well-being, representing 42% of the entire export segment in terms of income. The nation’s long border with Tibet is closed, so India to the south is its primary trading partner, and the two nations are in the midst of the establishment of a link to the vast Indian Railways system which will facilitate the transportation of goods through Bhutan’s notoriously rugged mountain terrain. The connection to India extends to linguistic issues as Bhutan has maintained English as the primary language of instruction, much like its giant sub-continental neighbor. Bhutan is certainly progressive as it is officially ranked as the second fastest-growing economy, not just in Asia but in the world. Burgeoning by leaps and bounds at an annual rate of 22.4%, Bhutan represents a market for digital print technology and consumables that may be small now, but will be considerably larger in the very near future. It’s a country well worth keeping an eye on as its future seems inordinately bright!

3.Maldives– The first thing that comes to the minds of most people when they think of this nation is of a languid tropical beach paradise which is widely heralded to be swallowed up in its entirety by rising ocean levels in the next few decades. The upcoming disappearance of the Maldives may or may not come to fruition as there are plans to protect major population centers through a complex series of sea barriers.

As a backup plan, the government has been actively purchasing land in India, Sri Lanka and Australia so that should the worst scenarios occur, the population of the Maldives would not have to resort to being nothing more than climate refugees in foreign nations but could create new semi-formal enclaves in those nations. Another country which was once a part of the British Empire and remained a protectorate of the United Kingdom all the way to 1965, the Maldives have English as the primary language of commerce and education although the only formally official language is the local Dhivehi. With a GDP similar to Bhutan, the economy of the Maldives relies on tourism to provide 28% of its total national income and has fish products dominating its exports. The primary markets for digital print technology and consumables

products are among the vast hospitality industry which skews towards the high priced resort business model for the wealthy international tourist. In that respect, the Maldives are responsible for a disproportionate amount of digital print technology and consumables purchasing to serve this advanced and expansive hospitality industry which far exceeds what would be expected in a country of just 300,000 people.

4.Laos– Positioned inland of Asian Tiger Vietnam, Laos currently exists in the economic shadow of its far more vigorous eastern neighbor. As typical of a landlocked country, the Laotian economy depends heavily on trade and investment with its neighbors for its USD 6.3 billion GDP. Fully half of the country’s economic force is represented by subsistence agriculture which employs four out of every five Laotians.

However, there are signs of industrial and commercial vitality, as the Lao Brewery Company exports widely throughout South East Asia, and tourism is the fastest growing industry in Laos. The government has recently taken considerable steps to emancipate the entire Laotian economy by opening the Lao Securities Exchange and facilitating international import and export functions through the Laos Trade Portal. Even with these recent institutional projects, 20% of GDP and 75% of public investment is still represented by foreign loans and grants. Lao is the official language but French is widely spoken and is the predominant language in commercial and official signage. As in many other nations in the Asia-Pacific region, English is swiftly becoming the lingua franca of Laotian commerce and education. Laos cannot be expected to transform itself overnight into a clone of its larger and more economically successful neighbor to the east, but it does represent a notable market for digital print technology and consumables online marketers, especially in the urban centers of Vientiane, Savannakhet, Paxse, and Luang Prabang, based on its continuing growth in tourism activities along with hydro-electric power generation as well as copper and gold mining. While it is true that the combined GDP of these four nations is less than USD$10 billion and thus represent a combined economic power which is just 2% the size of Apple Inc., there is ample justification for online marketers to carefully consider directing at least a portion of their efforts to these peripheral Asian markets. All of these nations are widely expected to keep growing their economies to ever greater levels of financial strength, and although the other three nations are not likely to match Bhutan’s stellar economic performance with an economy expanding by almost one quarter of its total size per year, there are still ample public and private sector markets in each which have a driving need to stay at the cutting edge of technology in order to adequately deliver their products and services in a globalized world. Digital print technology and consumables marketers have plenty of prospective customers to be found in these four countries!

Low-end Printing: Once the Darling of OEMsIn the past, low-end printing was the key target market for OEMs. At that time, iPad and iPhone had not been launched and internet communication was not so convenient. Everyone was used to printing photos and text for saving or sharing. The low-end printers met the demand and the family and SOHO printing had experienced a mad increase. But now everything has changed. The popularity of smartphones (like iPhone) and tablets (like iPad) brings a hit to the industry. This was illustrated in February 2012 in The Recycler in an article titled “Tablet Proliferation Adversely Affecting Print Volume”. The article maintains that “In a survey covering 700 tablet users in the US, 46 percent of respondents with 13 percent of the aforementioned printing 16 percent less following ownership of a tablet. 41 percent of participants cited a reduction in printing as a ‘main benefit’. Company efforts have also played a significant part in this reduction, with 75 percent of participants printing less following curtailment orders from employers. Additionally, there was a corresponding nine percent decline in printing and writing paper demand in the US following the first iPad release in April 2010. As of Q4 2011, paper demand has fallen by 24 percent since its peak in 2006.” In the future, printing volume will keep decreasing. Those opportunities of printing will be shared by electronic products. In August 2012, an article from Recycling Times shows that traditional printing is decreasing and HP might give up the low-end printers. For the printing business, a fundamental change is coming. It has become a direction for OEMs to pay less and less attention to low-end printing, especially in the laser printer market. While in the inkjet market, OEMs take a multi-step strategy, they still develop new low-end printers, though with consumables they apply an old structure and give up the development of new structures. In the high-end inkjet market, the new commercial inkjet printers often had installed complex new structure cartridges. The combination of this kind of high configuration, to some extent, shows that commercial inkjet printers strive to compete with laser printers in the commercial printing market. This adjustment for the inkjet compatible market is a challenge, but for Ninestar, it is an opportunity. Recently, OEMs have released “new models with old structure" cartridges. In the future, most compatible manufacturers can release new products the first time if they can purchase a compatible chip. But with low cost and low investment in research and development on the low-end market supplies, the original probably takes a low price marketing strategy. With the different quality of compatible supplies, low price is difficult to meet customer demand. Ninestar has been committed to the research and development of high-end cartridges. The current new models of cartridges are patent protected and it is comparable with original in quality. In the high-end market, the original cartridge structure has been introduced. Undoubtedly, it is a blow for the manufacturers which are relying on imitation of the original technology. First of all, these new structure cartridges are very difficult to imitate and make the quality stable. These supplies target office users with high-quality and high-volume printing. The dangers on the design of the quality or page yield are hidden in imitation cartridges. Second, originals set many patent barriers on the new structure. The technical force is limited for imitation manufacturers. It is difficult to avoid patented products. It is a blow for to the urgent need of low-priced, high-quality, high-end customers. Ninestar has focused research and development on new structure patents in HP, Canon, and Epson series ink cartridges. In the beginning of 2013 a new a series of new products will be released. It is believed that with the expansion of market share, Ninestar patented cartridges will be widely welcomed by customers.

Thailand Laser Printer Sales Projected to Get Boost from Start-Up CompaniesThe government's 40-billion-baht Tang Tua Dai Fund, which helps new entrepreneurs set up shop, is expected to spur sales of laser printers to grow by 7-10% in 2013 to about 500,000 units. Rangsan Naratchariyangkul, country manager for Fuji Xerox Printers, said new small and medium-sized companies joining the Tang Tua Dai Fund will drive the laser printer market because they need office equipment, especially computers and printers. For 2012, sales of laser printers are expected to grow by 5% to 450,000-460,000 units, propelled by demand from government projects. In the first half, the market slipped 0.4% because of the lingering impact of the 2011 floods. Mr Rangsan said lower prices for colour laser printers have led many businesses to buy a colour model instead of a monochrome one. The segment of multifunctional colour laser printers is expected to grow at a double-digit rate, surpassing overall market growth during 2012-13. Colour laser printers make up 10% of the laser printer market, with the rest still dominated by monochrome models. By the end of 2012, sales of colour laser printers are expected to reach 45,000 units, with 6,500 bought by businesses. Next year, the market share of colour laser printers is seen rising to 15% with sales exceeding 75,000 units, of which 15,000 will go to businesses. Fuji Xerox will focus on colour printers for mid-sized businesses that need high-speed printing (more than 20 pages a minute). The company has two flagship product models, the DocuPrint CM 405df and DocuPrint CP405d colour printers, with speeds of up to 35 pages a minute. "The new products will be introduced next year," Mr Rangsan said. "Average selling price will fall by 30% and printers with energy efficiency will cut the cost of investment for businesses by 30%." Fuji Xerox aims for a 40% share of the mid-range market in 2013. The company became the market leader with a 34% share for the first time in 2012.

This study quantifies the opportunity for inkjet technology in the office environment, and provides recommendations of prioritized product features to support product planning for office-focused business inkjet devices. Despite recent advances in office inkjet technology, laser devices continue to dominate office environments worldwide. In fact , InfoTrends es t imates that approximately 73% of print devices in the office in 2011 were laser-based (globally) compared to 27% for inkjet. The prevailing sentiment among many in the industry is that users believe laser devices are most appropriate for office use whereas inkjet technology is best suited to the home and small business environment. While InfoTrends sees a bright future for business inkjet in the office environment, this is largely dependent on vendors identifying and addressing the most important market needs. To fully capitalize on the expected growth of the business inkjet market, vendors will need to ensure their product development efforts, and subsequent sales and marketing execution, resonate with business customers around the world. As part of this study, InfoTrends surveyed approximately 50 existing business inkjet customers in 15 countries (a total of 750 respondents) and approximately 100 non-business inkjet customers in the same 15 count r i e s (1 ,500 re spondent s ) . Spanning a range of mature/advanced markets and emerging/high-growth markets, the countries consisted of Brazil, China, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The business inkjet users were surveyed on their experiences with their business inkjet products, while the non-business inkjet customers were tested for their unprompted acceptance of using inkjet technology in the office.

Additionally, the non-inkjet customers were introduced to the latest business inkjet technology through video and tested on the idea of using inkjet technology after this education to see if perceptions/acceptance levels had changed. The results have enabled InfoTrends to make a number of clear recommendations on the product features and functionality that business inkjet vendors should prioritize. Is Inkjet Printing Technology Ready t o T r a n s f o r m t h e O f f i c e P r i n t i n g Environment? provides critical features and functionality required for inkjet product acceptance in mainstream SMB/SME (small and medium business/enterprise) and enterprise workgroup printing across each major geographic region. It also sizes and forecasts the market opportunity for inkjet technology in the office by region (i.e., Asia Pacific, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, Middle East and Africa, North America, Western Europe). In addition, the report provides an analysis of the differences in attitudes towards ink-based marking technology among high-growth markets, advanced markets, and/or geographic regions.

Metrofuser Marks 10th Anniversary of Company FoundingJanuary 2013 marks the beginning of the tenth calendar year that Metrofuser has provided quality service parts, whole unit printers and training to its customers in the office equipment industry. In 2003, Metrofuser opened its doors as a remanufacturer and distributor of printer parts for Hewlett Packard laser printers. Over the years, the company has expanded its product portfolio to include Lexmark printer parts and it continues to offer increasingly more remanufactured, environmentally friendly alternatives for parts on the top monochrome, color and multifunction printers in the imaging supplies industry. The company has evolved considerably over the past ten years, adapting quickly but thoughtfully to meet the needs of its customer base. The company opened up a California distribution facility in 2006 because, as Metrofuser’s CFO Eric Katz noted, “many of our customers are in the service business and cannot afford to wait two or three days for replacement parts to arrive.” Metrofuser has worked with regional and national carriers to expand its range of next-day ground coverage while keeping freight costs manageable. In 2008, Metrofuser started to offer printer repair training classes. “It was an ideal way for us to support our current customers,” said Will DeMuth, Metrofuser’s Chief Operating Officer, “as well as expose our brand to new prospective customers. For growing service providers or copier dealers looking to increase their product base, our offering of weeklong repair and theory classes has been an essential tool in their expansion.” Metrofuser also began remanufacturing HP laser printers and multi-function devices in 2010. It is a division of the company that has seen rapid expansion, especially as managed print services (MPS) has taken hold and dealers look to find the most cost-effective, reliable printers to deploy. Years of experience in developing proprietary products that solve the industry’s complex problems have positioned Metrofuser as an industry leader that adapts to meet the needs of its clientele and is first-to-market with product offerings and unique solutions. Metrofuser has continued to grow year after year, despite an uncertain and often difficult economic climate. “The two most important forces in our rapid development,” said Demuth, “have been a superior team of professionals who care about keeping our customers happy and a maniacal obsession with improving and perfecting our quality. Many of our employees have been here for years, enabling us to create a core group of experienced technicians and managers whose dedication has allowed us to evolve and advance.” “In the end,” said Katz, “we look at our relationship with the customer as a partnership. When we make great parts and printers, when we provide them with training and the tools for them to excel, that is when and how we are able to grow and develop as a company.” He added, “We are proud of the company that we’ve built and even more grateful to our customers, partners and employees for the last ten years of service and support. We look forward to even better things in the future.”

Ninestar Announces Reliable Solution for Canon Compatible ChipsIn the last several years, Canon has experienced a growth in its inkjet business. Simultaneously, it has also paid more attention to inkjet patents protection and has upgraded its patents from cartridge structure to intelligence chips. After winning the litigation in Japan, they were awarded the light emission chip patent in Europe. It is predicted that Canon will spread the same litigation to the European market with great possibility. Ultimately, avoiding Canon chip infringement will become a concern to the players in the aftermarket. As the leading player in the aftermarket, Ninestar has stated that it has predicted its patent risk since 2011 and has also developed a solution. It is the first solution in the aftermarket for Canon's light emission chip patent and Ninestar has registered its compatible chip patents in China under numbers CN201110459870.1 and CN201110460180.8. The inkjet cartridges with Ninestar's patented chip has been sold in Japan and other markets. This experience has proved Ninestar’s strength in providing reliable patent solutions. The Canon patent is described as “the emission of light based on color information stored in the chip. The chip data needs the color ID in order for the printer to operate”. Canon's inkjet realizes its light emission by keeping the color ID consistent with the ID information sent by the printer. It is reported that the patent has already been awarded in Europe under patent number EP 2 062 731 B1. Ninestar has stated that its patent is based on “the emission of light as being independent and is irrelevant with color ID." From the two descriptions, we can ascertain that the light emission of Ninestar's is very different from Canon’s. Ninestar always respects the intellectual property right of OEMs while continuously developing its independent patents. Ninestar will focus on market development to monitor any infringement on its patented solution. Ninestar is ready to meet any market demands for Canon compatible chips in the European market and will provide the most reliable solution to their customers.

MemJet Joins Managed Print Services AssociationOn January 7, Memjet announced its membership in the Managed Print Services Association (MPSA). Founded in 2009, the MPSA is a global, non-profit organization that provides independent communications, collaboration, education, standards and success to MPS professionals. “We’re proud to be a part of MPSA, the premiere U.S. industry organization for managed print services professionals,” said Bill McGlynn, president of Memjet Office. “Memjet color printing technology is perfect for the MPS market which is experiencing explosive growth. With low running costs, a revolutionary ink refill model and desktop color speeds of a page-per-second, Memjet-powered office devices represent the office printing industry’s first breakthrough in two decades. Memjet heralds the beginning of an entirely new office printing category that gives resellers new options for increasing color pages and profiting from them.” The Memjet-powered C6010 color printer is now commercially available in the North American market under a distribution agreement with Parts Now. Since 1989, Parts Now has embraced the ever-evolving printing and imaging industry with a constant eye on the future. The company’s product, service and support portfolios continue to expand and these corporate investments propel its customers ahead of the competition. “Memjet is a very fast affordable color option for any MPS dealer” comments Ryan Humphrey, Director of MPS at Parts Now, “Not only is it fast but it ’s the perfect opportunity to replace your customer’s A4 or other expensive color laser device, and increase your bottom line.” “With low supply costs, and virtually no service costs the Memjet is the right machine at the right time,” comments Matt McLeish, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Parts Now. “Choosing quality suppliers that increase our customer’s success is what Parts Now is all about, so Memjet was a natural choice.” The C6010, powered by Memjet, operates at running costs that are half of those of traditional office printers and changes the way value is delivered in the office: with incredible energy efficiency, always in color at or near the desktop, and with ink refill as a default. The C6010 features Memjet’s page-wide printhead, which requires significantly less energy than existing laser printers by eliminating the fusing process inherent with laser printing technology. Memjet’s office printing technologies feature a unique “green” design to support dealer ink refill programs that encourage ink cartridge re-use and keep plastics out of landfills, while saving end-users money. Memjet’s OEM partners include LG, Lenovo and Océ among others. The company has been honored with several industry and technology awards, including top honors from the Printing Industries of America, Popular Science and the prestigious Edison Awards.

KYOCERA Launches Three New Ecosys PrintersKyocera Document Solutions completes its new Ecosys range with three entry-level desktop MFPs: the FS-1220MFP, FS-1320MFP and FS-1325MFP. The smallest footprint for MFPs in this segment makes them a logical choice for demanding single users and small teams. These printers includes a 100,000 page printing drum, which lasts up to 60 times longer than those used by competitors; even the toner capacity is much higher. All Kyocera models contain a unique easily accessible Quiet Mode button, both sides of an ID card can be printed onto one sheet of paper and the 1st sheet Manual Feed Tray for the FS-1325MFP is ideal for bespoke solutions such as prescriptions and small flyers. As space is often at a premium for small and medium-sized workgroups, both the size of the multifunctional device and the noise it produces during operation need to be taken into consideration by users. The new Ecosys models are all compact models with one of the smallest footprints in their class. Additionally, in Quiet Mode they operate at just 49dB for minimal workplace disturbance. Even with all these features, all models remain easy to use thanks to the Kyocera Client Tool and printer driver. The printer driver includes a useful ‘Quick Print ’ tab that needs just one click to change basic features including page orientation, duplex, multiple pages and eco printing. In addition, the Kyocera Client Tool provides status monitoring, advanced printer configuration, driver configuration and documentation in a straightforward manner. “The 1-20ppm and 21-30ppm A4 black and white MFP segments are the largest in Western European markets, and they are still growing,” explains Georgi Grigorov, Product Manager, Kyocera Document Solutions Europe. “This growth provides Kyocera with the ideal opportunity to expand its product range and bring Kyocera reliability and quality to new, demanding customers.”

WIDE FORMAT PRINTING

Canon Launches New Large Format MFP Solution for Technical Document EnvironmentsCanon Middle East has announced the launch of the Canon imagePROGRAF MFP M40 Solution, a total workflow system ideal for large format printing, scanning, archiving and sharing of colour and black and white documents. The solution includes a Canon imagePROGRAF large format printer, a new M40 scanner incorporated via an integrated stand, powerful MFP software and a large, easy-to-use touch screen interface with dynamic preview. From initial scan to final output, this complete solution is ideal for any size of workgroup that uses technical documentation - particularly in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) market. Incorporating Scan-To-Copy/File/Email/Cloud Connectivity and print functions, the new MFP is designed to meet the speed and precision requirements of demanding CAD/GIS users. The Canon imagePROGRAF MFP M40 is capable of scanning images up to 40" wide at speeds up to 13" per second (in monochrome). It uses a new arrangement of Contact Image Sensor (CIS) to ensure images are captured with accurate, shadow-free line definition and at true 1200 dpi optical resolution. Printing at 2400 x 1200 dpi with 4pl ink drop size, the MFP easily replicates fine lines and intricate detail. In addition, the 'hot swap' ink tank technology enables the ink to be changed without interrupting the print job. Operated by the SmartWorks MFP software via the large 22" intuitive touch screen, the imagePROGRAF MFP M40 is capable of batch scanning for improved efficiency. With a built-in 250GB Hard Disk Drive*, support for various file types such as PDF, JPEG and TIFF and the multiple configurations available, users can customise the solution to their exact needs and specifications. The solution is compatible with five large format printers from the Canon imagePROGRAF range - the iPF750, iPF815, iPF825 and the recently launched iPF760 and iPF765. Hendrik Verbrugghe, Marketing Director, Canon Middle East, said, "Previously architects, engineering and construction industries were the primary users of large format scanning and printing. However, as more and more diverse applications have appeared, we expect the market to grow accordingly. We're seeing increased usage from utility companies, oil and gas firms and government town planning agencies to scan, archive and reprint plans and technical drawings." Verbrugghe continued, "The Canon portfolio aims to respond to this demand. The new imagePROGRAF M40 system is an affordable option for high quality, large format scanning and printing. It is easy to operate, making it an incredibly versatile investment for any business wanting to boost the productivity of their imaging input to output."

Roland Corp Encouraged by Thai StartJapan-based Roland DG Corporation, a leading global manufacturer of wide-format inkjet printers, recently opened its first plant outside Japan in Thailand. The firm aims to use the Samut Sakhon factory as its regional production centre to capitalise on economic growth in Asean countries. Expansion outside Japan will enable Roland to lower costs and improve price competitiveness, particularly in emerging countries, said president Masahiro Tomioka. The company is also a worldwide provider of 3D milling, engraving and direct part marking technologies. The Japanese firm chose to build a factory in Samut Sakhon because of the skilled workforce and attractive incentives from the Board of Investment. The location is also seen as an ideal hub for Southeast Asia that will allow the firm to manage its logistics more efficiently. The plant will reduce risks to the supply chain as the province was unaffected by the massive floods in 2011. Located on the Sinsakhon Printing City & Industrial Estate, the factory started operations last October and produced 400 units in three months, said Roland Digital Group (Thailand) president Akira Suzaki. It has one production line turning out RE-640 and RA-640 wide-format printers for export to the US, Europe, Asia and Africa. The company aims to launch another production line for its VS series by July, increasing output to 3,700 units this year and 5,000 in 2014. Wide-format printer production in Thailand will account for about 40% of its global production. Mr Tomioka said the company would expand product design in Thailand by 2015. It aims to increase revenue from Asia to equal that from the US and Europe. Asia contributed only 10% of Roland's revenue of US400 million last year, while Europe contributed 34% and North America 24 %. The company has a 40% market share of the Thai wide-format printer market, where SVOA is a distributor.

First introduced in June 2012, the LaserJet Pro 400 M401 series of laser printers is based on 35 ppm, 1200 dpi Canon engine that comes standard with 256Mb Memory. Two different cartridges are available for this series, the CF280A rated at 2,700 pages, and the CF280X rated for 6,900 pages. See Figures 1 & 2 to see the 2 cartridges. These machines are different from the LaserJet 300/400 series. The engines and cartridges are totally different. This will most likely be a bit confusing for customers as when talking about the machines I’ve noticed people leaving off the “Pro” part.

The cartridges are similar in design to the P2035 cartridges, but are not interchangeable. The drum drive gear is also basically the same as the P2035. It is a floating type that uses a ball and socket configuration. See Figure 3. By the time you’re reading this, conversion kits to convert CE505A/X cartridges to CF-280A/X will be likely available.

These cartridges use a pin system to hold the two halves of the cartridge together. You will need to cut two small holes in the top to get access to the pins. The pin access hole location on these cartridges is almost identical and the same methods you use for the 2035 should work here. The printers released in this series so far are as follows:

1) Remove the drum cover by prying up on each end. Note the spring position so that it can be replaced later. See Figures 4 & 5

2) Drill a shallow hole on each side of the cartridge as indicated by Figures 6 & 7 (un-cut), 8 & 9 (cut).

3) Push the pins out with a jeweler’s screwdriver. With the hole in this location by just pushing the screwdriver in, the pins

will be pushed out. Remove the pins. See Figure 10

4) Separate the two halves. See Figure 11

5) With a flat head screwdriver, press the drum axle pin out from the inside of the cartridge wall as shown. There is a small shoulder visible that the screwdriver should

be pressed against. Make sure not to bend or damage the plastic wall as the plastic is thin and easily damaged. Remove the Axle pin from the outside with flush cutting wire cutters. See Figures 12, 13 & 14.

The drum hub on the opposite side is welded. The weld can be broken or drilled out, but there is a good chance that the hub will either warp if pried off, or will be hard

to align if drilled out. See Figure 156) Remove the drum. See Figure 16

7) Remove the PCR and clean with your standard PCR cleaner. See Figure 17

8) Remove the 2 screws and the Wiper Blade. See Figure 189) Clean out the waste toner.

10) Coat the wiper blade with your preferred lubricant. Install the blade and 2 screws. See Figure 19

11) Re-install the cleaned PCR. Note that a new OEM PCR has a small amount of conductive grease on the black (contact) side. See Figure 20

12) Re-Install the OEM OPC Drum and metal axle pin. The metal axle pin should have a small amount of conductive grease on the tip. Remove the old grease and replace before inserting the pin. Make sure the axle pin is fully inserted. See Figures 21 & 22

If you are replacing the OEM drum, follow this procedure to remove the gears and install them on the new drum: 13) Locate the Swivel hub on the OPC drive gear shown. See Figure 2314) Remove the swivel hub on the drive gear by pulling it out using pliers. See Figure 2415) Slide a 3/16" metal rod about 18" long along the drum wall until it meets the side wall of the gear. Lightly tap the rod a few

times with a hammer, rotate the drum, do the same until it comes loose. Normally it will take three to four taps for the gear to come loose. Do the same for the contact side taking care not to place the rod anywhere near the copper contacts that bite into the drum. See Figure 25

16) Straighten out the contacts on the contact gear. See Figure 26

17) Clean the contacts using cotton swab and alcohol. See Figure 27

18) Apply a few drops of super glue around the inside of the drum about 1/8” in from the edge. Make sure you leave space with no glue present for the contacts to touch the metal drum wall. These contacts must be metal to metal with no glue in between them. If any glue is in between the contacts and drum wall, there will be drum ground issues (solid black pages). Install the contact gear. See Figure 28

19) On the opposite side, place a few drops of medium or thick super glue on the inside wall of the drum about 1/8”in from the edge. This will prevent the glue from overflowing into the drum coating when the drive gear is installed. See Figure 29

20) Install the drive gear. Place the drum onto a flat surface and gently tap the gear with a rubber mallet until the gears sits flush. See Figure 30

21) Install the swivel hub into the drive gear. See Figure 31

22) Check the drum ground with an ohm meter. Place the probes into the drum contact and drum (very edge on the drum where there is no coating), and check for continuity. Be very careful to keep the one lead on the edge of the drum. The top metal part has a clear protective coating on it and is easily scratched. Do not press in hard or the lead will slide across the drum, ruining it. Allow the glue to dry for about a couple of minutes and the drum should be ready to use. See Figure 32

23) On the supply chamber, slice the two tabs off each location as shown on the left (Seal) end cap. Use a square blade X-Acto knife to slice off the tabs. See Figure 33

NOTE: Both the end caps are plastic welded in place. The only way to open them up is to cut the welds and carefully drill them out. We have found the left (Non-Gear) side is the best side to do this on. 24) Using the 3/32” drill bit, drill out each of the two welds. Be careful to keep the drill straight as you drill in. Use a slow speed and only drill in no more than ¼”. See Figure 34

25) With a flat head screwdriver work the edge of the blade around the edge of the end cap and gently pry up the end cap. You will hear the remaining parts of the welds break free. The top weld will also break off now. Take your time with this. See Figure 3526) Remove the magnetic roller assembly. See Figure 3627) Remove the Magnetic roller drive gear. The end cap will keep the bushing in place. See Figure 37.28) Remove the DR. Blade and two screws. See Figure 38.29) Clean out any remaining toner from the hopper. Note the Dr. Blade seal. It is a

sticky substance that can be cleaned with alcohol if toner gets on it. See Figure 39 30) Fill through the Mag roller opening with 110g of P2035 toner for the “A” cartridge, 290g for the “X”. There is not a fill plug in these cartridges. See Figure 40 31) If you are going to seal the cartridge, there is a white plastic shelf that needs to be removed. See Figure 41. The shelf is held on with double sided tape. It can be gently pried off with a small screwdriver.

32) Re-install the white plastic shelf. If the adhesive is not working, replace it with a good double sided tape. This shelf helps with the flow of toner in the hopper. See Figure 42

33) Re-install the doctor Blade and two screws. See Figure 4334) Clean the old grease off the contact plate, and replace with new conductive grease. See Figure 44

35) Re-assemble the toner hopper section. Place the Mag. Roller drive gear in place, install the magnetic roller assembly. Turn the roller until the keyed end fits into the drive gear properly. Install the end cap, align the keyed magnet into the keyed slot on the gear side first, this will help in aligning the opposite end cap. See Figures 45, 46 & 47

previously drilled out. Leave the top 3rd hole alone! (This weld was broken when the end cap was removed). A screw here will interfere with installing the cartridge in the printer. In our tests, the two screws will hold the end cap on with no problems. See Figure 48

37) Place the two halves together, make sure that the two springs are aligned, and insert the two pins. Make sure that the pins are slightly pushed in so that they do not interfere with installing the cartridge in the printer. See Figures 49 and 50.

38) Install the drum cover; make sure the spring is situated correctly, and the slot on the cover fits into the tab on the cartridge See Figures 51, 52 & 5339) Replace the chip by slicing off the top

two corners of melted plastic and sliding the chip out. After replacing the chip if it seems a little loose in the slot, place a dab of hot glue on each of the corners that you sliced off. The hot glue is easily removed when recycling the cartridge again, but will firmly hold the chip in place. See Figures 54, 55 & 56

How Far Away from MPS are the Remanufacturers?

David Gibbons

5.004 亿元,相比上年增长了 40.64%;

64 www.rechargeasia.com www.rechargeasia.com

美国 IT

Chris

他建议:“业务部门对于‘即服务’产品的支出已经超过了IT部门在这方面的支出;

Tang Tua

Dai

Rangsan

Tang Tua Dai

Rangsan

Xinjiang Lawyers Lose In Lawsuit Against Samsung

Green Project: The Way to Power

Green Project

Green Project

Mr. Roy Fan, Green Project:

Mr. Roy Fan, Green Project:

Mr. Roy Fan, Green Project:

Mr. Roy Fan, Green Project:

Mr. Roy Fan, Green Project:

www.rechargeasia.com

CEO之路 / CEO ON THE GO

73www.rechargeasia.com

Mr. Roy Fan, Green Project:

Mr. Roy Fan, Green Project:

Mr. Roy Fan, Green Project:

Mr. Roy Fan, Green Project:

Mr. Roy Fan, Green Project:

Clover Acquires Germany-based Toner Remanufacturer Dematec

Liu Kui, Director of Aeicei: Not One Step Backwards

Clover

Dematec

Clover

Dematec

Clover

Celine

Coleman

Clover

TRS、OPRA

绘容易反光,不适应电视转播的需要;

The Saving Tips of Inkjet Print Heads Details of Commonly Used Parametric Solutions in Printers

Stylus Photo R800、HP photosmart

(PPM:Page Per

Minute)

日本经销商 ASKUL(中文名:爱速客乐)于 1 月 8 日发
