Piecewise linearization algorithms are extensivelyused in nonlinear programming. For instance,trading companies attempt to minimize the costs offactory-vendor transportation and orderingtransactions. Such scenarios are normally

formulated in a nonlinear format. Conventionalalgorithms can only obtain a local optimum in suchscenarios. However, the difference between localand global optima leads to unexpected costs. Still,

piecewise linearization algorithms require too muchtime to obtain an optimum solution. For instance,while the objective function or constraint of anonlinear problem is highly nonlinear, the solutionand performance is always inadequate.

•Decision-making environments are increasinglycomplex. For instance, selecting the criteria fordeveloping a decision evaluation model is extremelydifficult. While the inclusion of too few criteria in theevaluation model leads to incomplete results, toomany makes the model too complex and difficult toevaluate. Notably, conventional evaluation modelsare generally concerned only with economic factorsand neglect factors that cannot be evaluated in

money. However, large investment programsinvolve many intangible factors that cannot bevalued, such as the satisfaction of related groupsand potential environmental impact.

• Recently emerging semiconductor technologies have

ushered in the feasibility of embedding several digitalmodules in a printed-circuit board (PCB) and combining

a larger system with several sub-chips. Moreover, the

system clock operates at a higher frequency than do

conventional system. Under these circumstances, theclock-skew problem becomes a critical issue. Owing to

different clock propagations, the sub-modules of a digital

system may be asynchronous. The process, voltage,

temperature, and loading (PVTL) factors inevitably

induce the clock-skew problem. Moreover, the skew

problem will worsen as the clock' operational frequency

increases, becoming a bottleneck in future-high-

performance systems and possibly resulting in system

malfunctioning.

• 3D models are extensively adopted inmultimedia applications owing to their relatively

low cost and the ease with which they construct

animated 3D objects. Although considerable

effort has been paid to developing a concise and

relatively easy means of constructing 3D faces,

animating a human face is still extremely difficult.

constructing digital objects since they manually

retrieve 2D images.
