TRANSCRIPT

Mayor WelcoMeTá áthas mór orm fáiltiú romhat chuig an chéad Fhéile Leabhar an Líne Dhearg, clár iontach imeachtaí ag tairiscint ruda do gach aon duine.

I am delighted to welcome you to South Dublin Libraries’ first Red Line Book Festival.

Featuring both Irish and international authors, the Red Line Book Festival is an exciting opportunity for readers and book lovers to engage and meet with their favourite authors in a meaningful way. Building on the success of their annual Readers Day over the past 10 years, South Dublin Libraries have put together a fantastic programme with a variety of leading literary talent offering something for everyone. A host of 40 authors will be taking part in this year festival, including President Michael D. Higgins, Anne Enright, Gerard Donovan, John Connolly, Mark Billingham, Christine Dwyer Hickey, Sean Moncrieff, Declan Hughes, Catherine Fulvio and Tony Bates.

The festival also offers an opportunity to showcase some of South Dublin County’s most exciting emerging writers with award winning poets Eileen Casey and Colm Keegan and crime author Louise Phillips.

Running alongside the general programme is a highly regarded Children’s Programme including poetry slam champion Stephen James Smith, authors Fiachra Sheridan, Sarah Webb and Oisin McGann & graphic novelist Stephen Mooney.

Another exciting element of the Red Line Book Festival is the 4th annual TEDxTallaght, an independently run TED event showcasing the best of Ireland’s new thinkers and innovators. With the theme “Where Stories Collide”, this year’s event includes speakers Maureen Gaffney, Caitriona Crowe, Cathal Garvey and many more.

I would like to thank South Dublin Libraries for putting together this wonderful, accessible Festival with the support of South Dublin Arts Office, Dermot Bolger, Bert Wright and all who have contributed to the Festival. I take pride in our excellent venues including The Civic Theatre Tallaght, Victory Centre Firhouse, Rua Red Tallaght and of course South Dublin library branches.

I have no doubt that the quality of the Red Line Book Festival programme will attract many new audience members to South Dublin County. I take this opportunity to welcome all visitors to the Festival, both those from within the County and those new to it. I hope you find the experience both enjoyable and enriching.

Best wishes

We exercise tHe poWer: Banned BooksNovember 5th-17th County Library, Tallaght Admission Free

We Exercise the Power is an exhibition of banned book covers which artist John Jones has painted. Jones made regular visits to the Irish Censorship Office to view the official Register of books that were banned in Ireland under the Censorship of Publications Act of 1930. When a book was deemed unfit for Irish readers, due either to themes of general indecency, obscenities, religious views, the issue of abortion or for other such reasons, it would automatically be prohibited by the Board for twelve years. When the twelve years passed, the Board could then reconsider the book and prohibit it again for a further twelve years. In this way, some authors found their books being banned over and over again in Ireland. In 2010, we saw for the first time, no new books banned in Ireland after the twelve-year ban was lifted on a number of books.

We Exercise the Power is comprised of 100 watercolour paintings of 100 books by 100 author’s who have at one time or another been banned in Ireland throughout the last century. The exhibition in the County Library, Tallaght will showcase a selection of Jones’ work. Many of the banned books will also be available for borrowing from the library.
