Definition of Terms
The Sabbath is the proper name in Scripture for the 7th day of the week
It corresponds to our Saturday
The question is not what day is the Sabbath, but whether under the New Covenant Christians are obligated to keep it
Thesis: Sabbath keeping is not obligatory for Christians in the New Covenant

Genesis 2:2-3 (ESV)
“And on the seventh day God finished his
work that he had done, and he rested on
the seventh day from all his work that he
had done. So God blessed the seventh
day and made it holy, because on it God
rested from all his work that he had done
in creation.”

Exodus 16:23, 25-26
“[Moses] said to them, „This is what the
LORD has commanded: „Tomorrow is a day
of solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to the
LORD; bake what you will bake and boil
what you will boil, and all that is left over lay
aside to be kept till the morning.‟ Moses
said, „Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to
the LORD; today you will not find it in the
field. Six days you shall gather it, but on the
seventh day, which is a Sabbath, there will
be none”.

Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy
laden, and I will give you rest. Take my
yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am
gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find
rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy,
and my burden is light.”

Colossians 2:16-17
“Therefore let no one pass judgment on
you in questions of food and drink, or
with regard to a festival or a new moon or
a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the
things to come, but the substance
belongs to Christ.”

Romans 14:4-6
“Who are you to pass judgment on the
servant of another? It is before his own
master that he stands or falls. And he will be
upheld, for the Lord is able to make him
stand. One person esteems one day as
better than another, while another
esteems all days alike. Each one should
be fully convinced in his own mind. The
one who observes the day, observes it in
honor of the Lord.”

Sabbath not Obligatory for Christians
Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15:28-29) ruled that while Gentiles should observe certain rules the command to keep the Sabbath is not mentioned.
9 out of the 10 Commandments are repeated and enforced in the New Testament except the fourth commandment to observe the Sabbath.
In Mark 7:21-22 13 sins are listed. Jesus did not mention breaking the Sabbath among them.

The Law of Christ

being outside the law of God but under the

Have you entered into God’s rest
(Hebrews 3:7-4:11)?
The rest of God is not a day, it is a state that we enter into through Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is God‟s true Sabbath.
The Sabbath pointed to Christ as a shadow, He is the reality of what the Sabbath stood for.
God has set a certain day for his people to enter into His “rest” and that day is…“Today” (Heb 3:13; 4:7).
