Hab.: This culton was found by Mataroku Yamanaka in cultivation. Maekawa (1940) published this taxon name based on a cultivated plant (without number) in Kikuchi's garden in Kyoto. Representative wild populations have not been found. Morphometric analysis indicates this to be an interspecific hybrid between H. montana and H. nigrescens combining the long-scape trait of H. nigrescens with the flower and leaf characteristics and blooming time of H. montana. Schmid (1991) reduced this taxon to cultivar rank. At Hosta Hill R.G. (located at 1188 feet (361m) AMSL; 84-12'-30" W and 33-51' N), this cultivar blooms in late June to early July, a later than H. montana. Specimens of H. nigrescens do not bloom until early August.

H. okamotoi = オクヤマギボウシ = Okuyama Gibōshi = Mount Okuyama Hosta AHS Name: H. okamotoi Hab.: Province of H. okamotoi (BGO Voucher - Cultivated) Tamba (丹波国; Hosta Hill R.G. ● W.G. Schmid May 1991 Tamba-no kuni). Collected by Okamoto in the vicinity of the village of Chii-mura in Kitakuwada-gun (北桑田郡) in Kinki Region (近畿地方). Closely related to H. takiensis and H. aequinoctiiantha and with these encompasses the “late-blooming” component of section Picnolepis. It also has a similar habitat, adapted to thin soil on arocky substrate in forested, isomountain valleys on slopes, also grows epiphytically on tree trunks. Differentiated from the above taxa by RAPD/DNA analysis

Schmid June 1988 H. ‘Pachyscapa’ at Hosta Hill R.G. 2006 Schmid (2006) considers H. ‘Pachyscapa’ to be an interspecific hybrid population, which grows in limited areas of the Kinki region. Very low fertility (Zonneveld 2001) points to cultivated, hybrid origin and wild populations have not been confirmed by Fujita, other than being mentioned as synonyms and no further field data have been published since 1940. For this reason it is perhaps best to consider this to be a culton and it was classified as a culton in Schmid (1991), using the name as H. ‘Pachyscapa’.

This “Japanese Plantaginea” differs from the Chinese species by having longer and narrower leaf blaand making a taller, a less compact leaf mound; by the anthers being yellow with slight purple dotting; and by the lobes of H. plantaginea var. japonica, more narrow and straigh

Schmid 1984 As cultivated in gardens today, H. sieboldiana is not of Japanese origin. It was first published by European botanists and it is the “European type” grown in Western gardens that is considered here as the “species” as described by Hylander (1954). The European type specimens are based on cultivated, hybridized sources. The taxon most often considered the “standard” form in Western gardens, namely H. sieboldiana ‘Elegans’, is known to be a hybrid made by Arends (1905) and named H. ‘Robusta’ (= H. ‘Tokudama’ × H. sieboldiana (a selected form of von Siebold’s importations). In 1984, I observed five of the Arends hybrids at the (historical) gardens of Fachhoch-schule (University) of Weihenstephan in Freising, FRG (see Type 1 photograph on page 16). The other types have similar macromorphology as shown and all look alike and are offered under the names H. sieboldiana or H. ‘Elegans’. In Japan, H. sieboldiana has been cultivated for centuries and includes many different phenotypes Maekawa [1940] named four, all originating in gardens. Based on research conducted by Hylander, Hensen and Schmid, the difference between H. montana and H. sieboldiana is finally established and gardeners can easily identify them:

Page 16: Register of Hosta Species and their Nomenclature • …...2008/04/09  · Han Dynasty (漢朝 206BC-220AD). The species was once thought to have evolved in Hebei province (河北),

1) H. sieboldiana: Leaves larger, 18 in. by 11 in. (46 by 28 cm), with 16 to 19 vein pairs; yellow anthers (before dehiscing); the leaves are bluish grey, corrugated/dimpled and covered with bluish-gray indumentum both sides; the scapes are 20-36 inches (50 – 90 cm) tall, first erect, then bending (data for mature plants).

2) H. montana: Leaves smaller, 12.5 in. by 9.5 in. (32 by 24 cm), with 13 to 16 vein pairs deeply impressed on top; purple anthers (before dehiscing), the leaves are smooth dull green with no indumentum; the scapes are 50-60 inches (1.25-1.5 m) tall and erect (data for mature plants). As to whether this taxon should be considered a species is another matter. H. montana inhabits large parts of the Japanese Islands. H. sieboldiana as cultivated is present in many Japanese gardens. However, allopatric popula-tions have not been confirmed in the wild. Since the name has seen widespread use in horticulture the world over, keeping it as H. sieboldiana is a practical solution.
