Over many centuries, a ritual of selichot ("forgiveness") evolved for the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah, to start the week that will usher in the new year.

Each year's journey toward renewed awareness, forgiveness and purification needs the spaciousness of time. The month of Elul, this selichot night, Rosh Hashanah, the Days of Awe and Yom Kippur together form an arc of spiritual journeying. The intentions of these days bring us into progressively deeper (andhigher) levels of awareness, release and renewal.

This siddur is dedicated to the timeless spiral journey of heart and soul – for each person and the whole community of Israel.

This siddur contains holy text: please handle it with respect and dignity.

IntroductionThis selichot ("forgiveness") service calls us to ready our bodies,

hearts, minds and spirits for the season of teshuvah (“return”). In heeding the call to return to our highest selves, may we release pain and habits that hold us in place, forgive those who may have hurt us, and seek forgiveness for times we ourselves missed the mark. By this merit, may we and our loved ones merit a good and sweet new year.

It is hollow and hungers to be full. It is the black zero of beginning.

Now you must void yourself of injuries, insults, incursions.

Go with empty hands to those you have hurt and make amends.

It is not too late. It is early and about to grow.

Forgive the dead year. Forgive yourself. What will be wants to push through your fingers.

Ribono Shel Olam – Master of the universe, Source of love and light,healing and wholeness:

I hereby forgive all who angered or hurt me, whether acting against my body, possession or reputation; whether a wrong was accidental or malicious, unwitting or purposeful, by word or by deed, by act or by omission.

May it be Your will, my God and God of my ancestors, that I not repeat my wrongs that distance me from You. May I have courage to seek forgiveness from all whom I angered or harmed. Heal their hurt so they can forgive fully. Clear all of these impurities and transgressions – not by sickness or suffering, but in great mercy.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart beacceptable to You, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of all time and space,For giving us life, and sustaining us, and bringing us to this season.

It's on us to praise the Source of all,to reflect greatness to the Creator,

who made us God's own along withall nations and placed us among the

peoples of the Earth.

And so we bend our knees and bowin praise before the Sovereign of

Sovereigns, the Holy Blessed One.

Let all of us bring about the day when injustice is no more,

When division melts into unity,

When narrowness opens into expansiveness,

When all dwell securely in a sukkah of peace,

When we tend the Earth as our Garden,

When we tend each other as our cherished partners,

When the path of holiness becomes all there is,

When we live heavenly days right here on Earth.

ונאמר, והיה יי למלך על כל הארץ,ביום ההוא יהיה יי אחד,

ושמו אחד:

As it is said, God will reign over allthe Earth: on that day God will beOne and God's Name will be One.

Magnified and sanctified is the Great Name in this world that God's will created. May God reign in our life and days, and thelife of all the House of Israel, speedily and soon. And we say, Amen.

May the Great Name be blessed always and forever.

May the Great Name be blessed praised, glorified, raised, exalted, honored, uplifted, honored and lauded: Blessed Be! Higher than all the blessings and praises we ever could utter. And we say, Amen.

May there be abundant peace from heaven and life for us and all Israel. And we say, Amen.

May the One who makes peace above make peace for us, for allIsrael, and for all who dwell on Earth. And we say, Amen.
