ARC 2625 Internship Report Name: Lim Jern Jack Student ID: 0317139 Company: Bio-architecture Formosana (BaF) Duration: 3 Jan 2017 - 10 March 2017 The Tower of Taipei Water Department (台北自來水事業處大樓與園區): I had participated in the company’s design competition of rebuilding the tower of Taipei Water Department (TWD) in Da’an District. I was designated to design the lifts, emergency staircases and ramps at the core, connecting from the basement floors to the upper floors. Besides, the alteration of the toilet on the ground floor was to match with the design of the lift in a form of symmetrical crescent-moon-shaped at the core. The circulation of the toilet was a bit odd at first owing to the constant changing of the uplifted entrance slope adjacent to the toilet and MEP room (mechanical, electrical and plumbing). As per request by TWD, the building should represent them in an icon of a water droplet in any possible forms, either in orthographic drawings or renderings. Therefore, the water droplet icon could be seen on the floor plans at the core (from the top view) and the toilet (a basin at the male toilet). I was also involved in discussions with the main architect of this project, AR. Zhang to comprehend more about the idea of this project. After that, I had participated in the process of diagram making. This included the form iteration from the concept itself, introducing each space in the towers and axonometric diagram of the basement levels where the parkings and the underground water reservoir situated. It was my opportunity to learn about the beginning process of idea exploration, form making and spaces regarding the requirements given. The logo that they used is the logo of the Taipei Water Department and it could be found on the existing site. In the beginning, the first few levels were coped with the ground floor, extending the entrance towards the people that might come from the MRT station and heritage spot adjacent to the site. There are 3 towers in total. One of the towers is for the water department itself and the remainings are to rent as offices that are connected with a sky bridge on the top floor. The final touch of the diagram was to convey the necessity of giving back to nature by planting greenery on the site, both facade and rooftop. The presentation of the diagrams had been revised for a few times to be on a par with the latest changes. I had also discussed with the presentation team about the colour schemes and composition of the report and presentation slides. All rights reserved. However, the landscape of this project was integrated with another company in order to get an ideal outcome. After revising the previous diagrams, the construction process were being drawn too. We had discussed and confirmed the proper process with the head of technical department of our company, Mr Weng. He suggested some necessary steps to be altered and the ways to improvise our diagrams in order to make it more comprehensible. Understanding of the process was a very precious lesson for me because construction techniques could vary from project to project and the information we covered in class could not apply to every condition. After all, I had the great opportunity to go for the presentation on 1 March 2017, competing with other renowned architecture firms at the current Taipei Water Department office.

Green Smart City, ShaLun Town in Tainan District (沙崙綠能科學城): However before the presentation of the previous competition, my unit had started on a competition which is building a smart city in Tainan District. It aims to develop a smart city that drives with renewable energies, providing ‘Plug & Play’ demonstration field for green technology manufacturers to educate the nation about the importance of green technology. The macro site of this masterplan is divided into 6 microsites which are 600m away from the Tainan High Speed Rail Station. The site we got was Site D which has a total land area of 74,400m2. Yet, the brief had stated that the built area should be 70% reserved as a green ecology park, and the rest area shall comprise public space, urban space, living lab, open lab, research lab, photovoltaic station, laboratory building and a smart car park (300 units). Therefore, I had done several case studies on urban spaces such as green spaces and solar energy using spaces. For instance, Floating Solar Testbed in Singapore, Act Naturally by all(zone) in Bangkok, Futuristic canopy made of Knitted Solar Panels in New York, D7 Sentul and Perdana Botanical Garden Canopy in Kuala Lumpur. I was involved in a few discussions before I had come to an end for this internship programme. We had been studying and analysing the form and space arrangement that could work the best on site.

Award of Excellency by Taipei City Hall (台北市政府公共工程卓越獎): HuWei Cultural and Creative Park (滬尾職人文園區) & XinDian Social Housing (新店區中央新村北側社會住宅) These projects were held by Taipei City Hall, yet both sites are located in New Taipei, the outskirt of Taipei City. In both of these projects, I was involved in different aspects, weather analysis for HuWei Cultural and Creative Park, and floor plans alteration in the case of XinDian Social Housing. Although both of the sites are located in New Taipei, HuWei is actually situated at the north of Taipei City whereas XinDian at the south of Taipei City. I had applied the technical skills that I learnt in class using the softwares to get the data, and perceived the manner of urban sprawling in the north of Taiwan.

Construction Site Visit at the Hostel of National Taipei University of Technology in Wanhua District, Taipei City (北科大宿舍) From the site visit, I had learnt the basic knowledge of building basements, precautions before pouring concrete on the slab and column, the setting of electrical and plumbing systems, and so on.

Weekly Happy Hour Session: The interesting part of internship was on every Friday in which a weekly happy hour session will be held, inviting an architect or a speaker from other company or university to share their previous projects and thoughts. I remember there was a local landscape architect graduated from Harvard University who owns a landscape architecture firm called daVision. He talked about his vision, ideas and thoughts about the field of landscape architecture in Taiwan and the countries he had come across. He shared the process of his career that he proclaimed himself as a pure landscape architecture as he studied landscape architecture since the beginning of his study. He reckoned that he was somehow disappointed on the local projects because people did not really appreciate what the landscape architects had contributed to the locals. He hoped that he will be able to change the trend slowly, turning the mindset of landscape architecture is only about greenery to build a better landscape and environment for the nation.

Green roof is the most prevailing way to show the landscape.
