The 10th Chinese X-Ray Spectrometry Con-ference (CXRSC) took place on 1st and 2nd August2013, in Chengdu City (成都) of Sichuan Province(四川省). This conference was hosted by ShanghaiInstitute of Applied Physics, and co-hosted byTechnical Commission on Rock and Mineral Analysisand Shanghai Institute of Ceramics. As the largest domestic meeting of X-rayspectrometry in China, CXRSC was bienniallyorganized by Technical Commission on Rock and

Mineral Analysis and Geological Society of China.Several prestigious Chinese research institutes, likeShanghai Institute of Applied Physics, ShanghaiInstitute of Ceramics and National Research Centerfor Geoanalysis, take turns to host the meeting.CXRSC gathered scientists, engineers, and graduatestudents from China and other countries with themain intention to report on and discuss the recentdevelopment of X-ray spectrometry in method, technology and application, as well as the further

advances of methodological and instrumental devel-opments of modern analytical techniques. Detailsabout CXRSC can be found in previous reports.1-3)

Near to 100 participants (Photo.1), working inuniversities, research institutes, instrument companiesand museums from China, Canada and Japan, at-tended the 10th CXRSC. The two-day meeting wasdivided into six sessions; each session was chaired bydifferent specialist. The first session (openingceremony) was chaired by Prof. Yuying Huang(Deputy Director of Department of Physical andEnvironmental Sciences at Shanghai SynchrotronRadiation Facility, Shanghai Institute of AppliedPhysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences). Prof.Liqiang Luo (Vice-President of National ResearchCenter for Geoanalysis, China) hosted the secondsession in which technology advances of X-ray spec-trometry were discussed. Dr. Shangjun Zhuo (Direc-tor of Analysis and Testing Center for Inorganic Ma-terials in Shanghai Institute of Ceramics) chaired thethird session focusing on X-ray methodology. Dr.Shan Qiao (Shanghai Institute of Microsystem andInformation Technology), Dr. Yidong Zhao (Instituteof High Energy Physics of Chinese Academy ofSciences) and Dr. Aiguo Zhao (Shanghai Institute ofApplied Physics) hosted the fourth (Application ofX-ray spectrometry), the fifth (synchrotron radiationtechnique) and the sixth session (X-ray spectrometer),respectively. In addition to an opening speech givenby Prof. Liqiang Luo (Photo.2), the program included19 brief lectures followed by detailed discussion. Dr.Lesley M. Egden (McMaster University, Canada)whose research aims to develop methods by usingX-ray and neutron activation technique to measureelemental content in living human objects, wasinvited by Prof. Liqiang Luo, gave a lecture titled“Accelerator-based measurements of in-vivo nitrogen”(Photo.3). In her presentation, occupational and en-

vironmental nuclear medicine research group inMcMaster University, measurements of toxic ele-ments by XRF, and the measurements of Mn, Al, F,and N by delayed or prompt NAA were introduced.Compared to the previous CXRSCs, a distinct char-acteristic of the 10th CXRSC is the inclusion of morepresentations about synchrotron radiation techniqueand its application. Several researchers from BeijingSynchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF) and Shang-hai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) presentedthe development and application of SSRF's X-ray mi-cro-focusing and imaging beamlines, as well asBSRF's low- and mid-energy X-ray spectroscopybeamline. In addition, the applications of synchrotronradiation technique in biological effect investigationof nanomaterials and speciation analysis of toxicelements in vivo were introduced and discussed.Presentations on fundamental parameter method,reference-free quantification in XRF analysis, X-raycapillary lens, and high-purity Ge detector were alsomade to dedicate to the X-ray methodology ortechnology advances. Applications of lab-source XRFtechnique presented in this conference mainly focusedon geology, environment, archeology and industry. In the presentations of XRF technique's environmental

applications, environmental pollution which is one ofthe most serious problems facing Chinese today wasinvestigated in mining areas of China. Only one talkcontributing to total reflection XRF technique wasgiven. The talk titled “High-Sensitivity Portable TotalReflection X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer(TXRF)” was given by the author of this report. A proceeding including papers and abstractssubmitted by participants, was compiled and distributedduring the conference. Titles and authors of all thecontributions, eleven of which were orally presentedin the conference, are listed in Table 1. Some of thecontributions will be published in the Chinese CoreJournal-Rock and Mineral Analysis. Those who areinterested in the topics may check the Journal website(www.ykcs.ac.cn). No.1~25 contributions, which covertechnology, instrumentation and application of X-rayspectrometry, can be further classified into the followingcategories: (i) synchrotron radiation technique (No.1and 2); (ii) application of synchrotron radiation tech-nique in biogeochemistry (No.3~9), materials (No.10and 11), archeology (No.12) and industry (No.13);(iii) technology advances of X-ray spectrometry

(No.14 and 15); (iv) small size X-ray spectrometer(No.16); (v) application of XRF technique in geology(No.17~24) and archeology (No.25). In addition, application of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) in geology (No.26) as well as diagnosis andtreatment of acute radiation sickness (No.27) werealso included. Compared to the Conference on X-rayChemical Analysis in Japan, the main difference ofthe Chinese X-Ray Spectrometry Conference lies in theinvolvement of basic radiation medicine knowledgethat every radiation user should know about, with theaim of self-care and health protection. Feedback from the 10th CXRSC was verypositive. Participants greatly enjoyed the chance tomeet like-mined people, to share their experiences,to learn from one another, and to debate the futuredevelopment of X-ray based analytical techniques. It provided all participants a platform to know cur-rent technical development and innovative techniquesof Chinese XRS. Additionally it gave them a chanceto network and to explore ideas. The next conferencewill be held in the second half of 2015. Final sched-ule of the 11th CXRSC will be decided by the middleof 2015 and then announced on the official websiteof National Research Center for Geoanalysis, China
