CONCEPT NOTE

Ever since the emergence of Comparative Literature as an academic

discipline has aroused curiosity regarding its horizon of studies and suspicion

regarding its applicability. Anyhow with the increasing global consciousness the

area of comparative studies widened, ranging from regional, ethnical, marginalized,

still widening, spreading its wings towards translation studies, philosophy,

psychology, to other art forms and engulfing and enriching each and every sphere of

human life and activity.

India with its multi linguistic and multi cultural scenario has always been a

matter of awe to the world.Tagore preferred to address Comparative Literature as

World Literature.Indian visionaries has understood the capacity of comparative

approach in the process of defining and tracing out the concept of Indian literature

and derived the wonder quote; "Indian literature is one though it is written in many

languages." Since then this term had been widely used as a cultural and political tool

in national integration. In the present context the polyphonic nature of Indian

literature and culture itself is in the critical domain. It wouldbe apt to discuss the role

of comparative literature in this context. We hope an international seminar of this

sort would throw some light in this direction.
