Yesterday, I got the news that a new character based Nastaliq font prepared by Nasrullah Mehr will be released soon for all the Urdu users free of any cost. Nasrullah Mehr is a well known name in Arabic and Urdu calligraphy, specially his efforts for the improvement of Urdu typography spans over several years of continuous struggle and hard work. Urdu users are still very anxiously waiting for his unique Mehr Nastaliq font that is a real master-piece of Nastaliq calligraphy. Nastaliq style is the centre of Urdu calligraphy and typography. The Nastaliq cursive shaping, every letter requiring a large number of shape variables for each joint and each position and the Barree Yeh of Urdu makes it extremely difficult for font designers to produce proper word shapes according to the Nastaliq calligraphic rules. The leading font experts around the globe have been continuously trying for the last 2-3 decades to provide some easy and simple solution for Nastaliq writing but till yet they have not succeeded. They have to adopt a very long way of using thousands and thousands of ligatures to provide good calligraphic shapes in Nastaliq style. The problem is so complex that till yet there is not a single character based font that can produce satisfying Nastaliq calligraphic shapes. The available character based Nastaliq fonts usually produce so weird shapes that most of the users avoid using these fonts in their projects. In this difficult situation, it is really a big news that Mehr-e-Nastaliq Web font is going to be released soon by I.T. University Lahore. The font samples clearly demonstrate the proper and beautiful Nastaliq shapes. Its salient features of high speed, very small size, support for marks and kashida further clarify that Mehr-e-Nastaliq Web

font is a huge leap in OT character based Nastaliq typography on computer platform. The only lacking thing in the font appears to be the kerning but the designer is assuring the users with a solution soon. I congratulate the designer for his amazing achievement. Also I personally appreciate I.T. University Lahore for taking such a great initiative to encourage the hard work of a unique calligrapher and font designer. Definitely such steps will greatly encourage the designers to improve their works and to provide good solutions for Urdu typography problems. Thanks, Muhammad Zuhair Albazi

Creating a font is mammoth task in the world of Urdu computing. Though, Google, Microsoft and other world

giants have created Urdu open type character-based fonts, but it does not have the finesse that could appeal to

the Urdu world. Since, Urdu is majorly written in Nastaliq form, the need for a Lahorean-style Nastaliq open font

was always felt. Now, the arrival of ‘Mehr Nastaliq’ (web version), an open type character-based font, managed to

quench some thirst.

‘Mehr Nastaliq’ was recently released in Pakistan. Samples are simply beautiful. Looking at it, it could be said,

without the fear of being rebutted, that it is, by far, the best Lahorean-style Nastaliq font. Creators have used

latest technique for developing this font. It is not only necessary but also commendable. Proper work is being done

on rendering and size, which is commendable. The font is nicely shaped into Lahori Style, which gives an

impeccable impression the creator/designer/calligrapher of the font. Samples of calligraphy and the actual fonts

are very close to each other. Definitely, it is a beautiful extension in the existing list of Urdu open type character-

based fonts.
