TRANSCRIPT
As I sit at my desk writing this on Monday morning it’s hard to
think about anything other than that Tommy Hicks has gone home. Tommy had such an impact on this church, community, and wider area! After he was diagnosed with leukemia and had the surgeries on his head Tommy surprised us by living as long as he did. Tommy’s funeral was conducted Wednesday. We had the largest crowd we’ve
ever had in our building. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Bobbie and her family. We had 18 present at the “Senior Saints” lunch and game day at
the XYZ last Thursday. Jerry Jones, speaking for the elders, expressed the hope that we would all be patient about getting our landscaping done. Several people have been helping out. If anyone would like to help with any
phase of it, please see Debra. Former member of this congregation and BHS track and cross-country coach James Morris is a finalist for induction into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. (He also coached at South Plains College and
Texas Tech). One reporter said that Morris (the son-in-law of Ollie Brown) was “one of the most knowledgeable track coaches in the country perhaps even the world.”
For A Better Week please consider the following: “Worry doesn’t help tomorrow’s troubles, but it does ruin today’s
happiness.”
“Patience is counting down without blasting off!”

UNTIL THE ROLL IS CALLED UP YONDER Our beloved brother Tommy Hicks was born on Sunday November 12 1922, and he passed away on Sunday June 24 2007.
Tommy married Bobbie (Bowers) on June 2, 1943.
Tom, his son, was born April 3, 1944. Tommy was in Sherwood Forrest England, preparing for D-Day. Linda, his daughter, was born on September 9, 1947.
Cline Paden baptized Tommy in 1946 at the old Main Street Church of Christ, Brownfield.
Tommy led the singing at the first service in the new building on Lubbock
Highway in 1947 of the newly named Crescent Hill Church of Christ. For 57 years the congregation (later the Brownfield Church of Christ) used that building, and Tommy often led singing. For several decades he was the primary song leader. On March 2006, though in poor health, Tommy
lead the first song in the new building, which was constructed after the devastating fire of 2004. Tommy served the congregation first as a deacon and then, beginning in 1960, as an elder. These are a few important dates in the life of our dear
brother Tommy Hicks.

I’m sure you have your own favorite memories of Tommy. An en-couraging handshake, a hug, and a smile. The spring in his step, and the last curl of hair, which he was so proud of. One of the many ways in which Tommy served Jesus and our congre-
gation was through his deep love for singing. Perhaps Tommy led the singing at your wedding, or your parents’ wedding, or even your grandparents wedding. Perhaps he led the singing during the funeral of your loved ones. Jesus used Tommy to bless our congregation in
song in so many wonderful and various ways. And the memory of Tommy leading the singing is indeed a “precious memory.” Tommy was blessed by God with an insightful and sharp business sense. And this business sense was guided by principles that not
only followed the law of the land, it was also guided by the highest standards of Christian morality. Tommy and Bobbie were very gen-erous with the material blessings God gave them. Different members have shared with me stories of times when Tommy and Bobbie helped them out in times of financial difficulty. I’m sure there are
many more secret instances of their generosity in both the congrega-tion and the community. As an elder Tommy cared deeply about his role as a shepherd, the will of Jesus for His church, and the needs of the congregation. As a
Trustee of LCU, Tommy was a great supporter of Christian education. As a director of the New Mexico Christian Children’s home in Portales, Tommy had compassion for children.
Tommy fought a courageous battle against cancer and its various complications for the last few years. He maintained his sweet dispo-sition and even in the midst of great pain he did not complain. He lived his deep belief in Jesus, right up to the very end.
A few years ago we had a special Sunday service during which we honored Tommy. We followed the service with a special fellowship meal featuring Tommy’s favorite dessert, banana pudding. (I don’t think that I will ever eat banana pudding again without having fond memories of Tommy.)
During the special service we presented Tommy and Bobbie with a plaque inscribed with a passage from Philemon 1:7. These words were written by the apostle Paul to our brother Philemon almost
2000 years ago. Tommy was a powerful example of these words, our own special Philemon.
Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother,
have refreshed the hearts of the saints.
See You Sunday, Derek
