手順手順 1 — Announcement

I decided I would try to design andorder a small batch of flexible PCBas a replacement of the fragileribbon - the achiles heel of allGR1's;

If anyone is willing to donate theirdead GR1 for this project, I wouldtry create the input data for themanufacturing of the flexible PCB(Gerber file) and order a small batchof PCBs. I would then make the filesavailable open source.

So, Is anyone willing to donate theGR1 body? I am paying for theshipping and offer also one of thenew ribbon PCBs as a reward.

Disclaimer: It is still just an idea, andI can't guarantee it will work.However if it turns out the way Ihope, this could resurrect hundredsof crippled GR1's with failing LCD orVF lines.




手順手順 2 — Opening the top cover

There are 4 Philips head screws that must be removed to open the top of the camera.

2 are under the leatherette, one on the front and one on the back

be careful when removing the plastic piece around the eyepiece, there is a hook holding the righthand side farther from the visible screw.

There is also one long screw accessible from the inside near the film take up spool.




手順手順 3 — Under the top cover

You will see the LCD and a bunch of flexible circuit boards soldered on top of each other

To continue disassembly further you will need about 20-30W "pencil" soldering iron

If you want to replace the conductive tape and restore lost segments of the top status LCD orviewfinder icons, you will also need a "3M Electrically Conductive Adhesive Transfer Tape 9703"(product page) Usually can be bought on ebay in smaller quantities.

Buttons should stay with the top cover as can be seen in the picture without anotations

手順手順 4 — Desoldering

There are some connections you need to desolder and one screw you need to remove.

the red circled solder joints may need to be desoldered (see comments below guide), I am notsure about the green circled, but try not to if possible

the flexible circuit board is held by strong double sided tape and it might appear that you need todesolder more joints, when it's actually just the tape holding it.

Your goal is to get to state like in the second picture, where I've bent the flex circuit boards open togain access to the white flexible ribbon cable

手順手順 5 — Replacing the 3M 9703 conductive tape

This is the hardest part, and it's verydifficult to take pictures of ordescribe.

you need to somehow gently detachthe white ribbon cable from the LCD/ flexible circuit board / viewfinderLCD (replacing ALL 3 conductivetapes may not be necessary, seecomments below guide)




The ribbon is very fragile, and in allthose connections is covered with atransparent tape to add strength tothe connection

Be sure to clean both surfaces withalcohol and remove any residue ofprevious conductive tape

Before reattaching simply cutappropriate size of new conductivetape and apply to the ribbon, thenpress in the right place

reattaching to the flex circuit board isthe easiest, because you actuallysee the copper paths which need toalign with the black stripes of theribbon

reattaching to the viewfinder LCD ismore difficult, you need to align theright hand side edge of the ribbon

reattaching to the LCD is by far thehardest. On the LCD itself you canjust barely see the conductive pathswhen you look at an angle. They aremade of ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) andnearly transparent. I made markswhere the rightmost and leftmostcondctive paths are with a sharpieon the other side of the glass, andthen glued the ribbon back on




To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.

手順手順 6 — Conclusion

If you've done everything right, youshould see all segments on the thetop LCD and in the viewfinder

it took me several tries to reattachthe ribbon to the LCD and viewfinderLCD, patience and steady hands isthe key to success.

Try not to damage the ribbon toomuch when detaching it. I did andhad to shorten it slightly and in theend I had problem to fit the partsback together.

Reassembly should be just reverseorder of disassembly. Don't forgetthe rewind button.

When you're at it, do yourself a favorand buy some leather sheets fromAki Asahi and give your GR1 a newcovering.
