A Case Study Highlighting the Use of TurningPoint Data to
Produce Learning Analytics & Pedagogical Research
Fabio Aricò,
Lecturer in Macroeconomics
CASE STUDY
• Fabio was looking to provide a personal experience to students in his large classes
• Also wanted the technology to create an open dialogue of continuous feedback with students and to increase their ability to self-assess
• With TurningPoint, Fabio was able to gain insight as to
how his pedagogy was unravelling throughout the year
• With the data gathered through TurningPoint, he
produced learning analytics and pedagogical research
• During lectures, Fabio uses TurningPoint to ask revision questions at the
beginning of lecture to get a sense of how he taught the previous lesson
• He then asked questions to determine the students understanding as they
proceed through material
• At the end of each lecture, Fabio asks Likert scale questions to see how the
students got on and to measure any difficulty they may be experiencing
• With this data, Fabio produces a PDF report that is posted to the
Blackboard VLE where he comments on student feedback and provides
suggestions to further their improvement
• Fabio held focus groups to identify the power of TurningPoint in eliciting
self-confidence and self-efficacy skills.
• Almost all students recognised the role of ResponseCards as a powerful
self-assessment tool.
• Those who did not, at least felt empowered to have a voice.
• Last year, about 50% of Fabio’s students were international and due to
cultural issues, those students were not as vocal – TurningPoint gave this
minority a voice
‘TurningPoint empowers the potential to do all sorts of pedagogical research outside of class -
and I find it simply amazing.’

This case study outlines the use of interactive theatre
processes with TurningPoint
CASE STUDY
Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing
James Wilson has pioneered the use of interactive
theatre in health care education, which has led to
the innovation affectionately known as ‘clicker’s
theatre’
• Started using TurningPoint in the classroom to test knowledge,
expel myths and spark debates and dialogue with his students
• In recent times, he has integrated the use of interactive theatre
processes and TurningPoint to produce an innovative way for the
mental health student audience to interact with the presented piece of
theatre
• ResponseCards are given to the audience, and a play is acted in front of
them (typically a play outlining a serious mental health issue)
• The play would pause at various intervals and the students would chose
the action the actors would take, according to best practice. The play
would then continue
• In giving the students this opportunity, their learning was enhanced
and they were fully involved in the direction of the play, thus seeing the
consequences of their decisions
• This produced a sense of democracy as everyone had a vote, and
evoked debate amongst the various groups who wanted to explore
different options
• The evaluation by the participants was overwhelmingly
positive and has led to a national award and three
county level awards for excellence in teaching. It has
also been disseminated at a national level conference and
two local level conferences
• The evaluation data from both projects showed extremely
high levels of active learning and engagement
‘The experience has been second to none – the technology works a
dream and I intend to publish my findings so the wider teaching
community can learn about the work’
James Wilson, Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing
• 31,000 students and 3,000 staff – one of country’s largest and most diverse organisations.
• Vision is to be one of the world’s leading learning and teaching universities.
• Committed to technological innovation, which extends to the latest learning technologies -
with TurningPoint playing an increasingly important role in student learning.
• Main departments using TurningPoint are the Business School and the School of Law.
• As well as helping to gauge student understanding, TurningPoint is used to stimulate group
discussions before polling takes place
‘Being able to ask questions as we go along helps to keep students engaged, and the instant
feedback helps me determine which issues they’ve understood and which we need to go over
again…’

Driving Technology in Learning
‘I thought I was a good
teacher until I discovered
my students were just
memorising information
rather than learning to
understand the material…’
The purposes of TEF are:
1. to encourage excellent teaching for all students.
2. promote improvement by highlighting exemplary practice.
3. promote cultural change to recognise teaching as equal in
status to research.
4. provide clear information on teaching quality to assist
student choice.
5. provide clear information to help employers recruit students
with better and known skills.
6. recognise and respect the diversity of provision and
different types of excellence.
• Increase student engagement and classroom interaction
• Facilitate class room discussion, also supports Peer Instruction,
Game Based Learning and more
• Assess student learning efficiently on an ongoing basis
• Gauge student opinions in a confidential manner on sensitive topics
• Identify students’ background information and prior knowledge on a
subject
• Help students recognise gaps in their own learning.
Why Response Technology?
Prove teaching excellence!
How TP can help with TEF
• Instructors can prove teaching excellence via the
reporting features with solid numerical data
• Instructors can pose questions to their classes at
the start of a new topic and again at the end, to
determine if the class fully understands
• Instructors can report on classroom and individual
understanding
• Spot gaps in understanding and know what topics
needs more work
• All to help prove teaching excellence and support
student understanding
• Individual handheld devices or an app called
• Instructors pose the questions, students answer
• Multiple choice, text response, true/false, etc., instant results
• Reporting features gives instructors an instant picture into class
understanding and to see if teaching is effective
• Integrates with campus LMS
