Roger Albert Clark Rally | Rally Guide 2011
n behalf of the organising team for the Roger Albert Clark Rally 2011 it gives me great
pleasure to welcome competitors, officials, volunteers and
spectators and to what we hope will be an exciting and tough
event, without quite the challenging conditions of last year.
I hope that the conditions this year are kinder and that our supporters and
spectators are able to access the special stages to watch what will be an
exciting climax to the rally season once again.
Last year the event had its first overseas winner in the team of Stefaan
Stouf and Joris Erard and their performance in their category of the British
Historic Rally Championship throughout 2011 must make them favourites
to retake the Roger Albert Clark Rally winner’s crown. However it must
be noted that this has never happened yet during the events history.
Since it started in 2004, the Roger Albert Clark Rally has gained the
enviable reputation as a friendly event, from both our dedicated
volunteers, crews and spectators. I am glad that everyone who comes to us has such a good time and I trust
that this will be repeated again in 2011. I have made a few changes for this year, for example I have worked
hard to include some new special stages with the welcome return of the Croft racing circuit, which will allow
the event to be brought to a greater number of people.
As always I am grateful to our group of sponsors, without whose support this event would be even more
difficult to put on.
For 2011 I have asked my media team to put together this rally guide in order to help everyone make their
plans for the event. Whether you are a competitor, media representative, official, marshal, supporter or
spectator, they have tried to include as much detail as possible to help you make these plans. This document
holds no regulatory powers for the event and is for information only.
In conclusion, I look forward to seeing you all on the Roger Albert Clark Rally 2011 and invite you to join
us at our ceremonial finish in Carlisle City Centre on Monday December 5th. Have a great event.

Roger Albert Clark Rally | Rally Guide 2011
he Roger Albert Clark Rally is an event which was conceived during 2003 and 2004 to recreate the
iconic RAC Rallies of the 1970’s and 1980’s. This event wasn’t intended to replace the Wales Rally GB,
but more to revisit the magical memories of the history of the era, when rear wheel drive cars were
kings of the special stages. Run over four days, it contains a mix of classic forest and tarmac special stages
along a route which starts in Yorkshire and finishes in Carlisle, after spending time in the Scottish Borders and
Kielder regions. The event attracts thousands of travelling spectators, who together with the marshals, event
officials, competitors and their support crews are responsible for contributing in excess of £1M to local
economies.
Since the first running of the event in 2004, when it started from Sheffield with a very modest field of
competitors, this event has become the “must do historic event” of the domestic rallying calendar. As a finale
to the year, the Roger Albert Clark Rally attracts a far bigger field of cars these days. In fact in 2010 the
event attracted its biggest number of overseas crews ever, a feat which it aims to build on for 2011. The
event will once again be a thorough examination of the rallying skills of competitors in the world class forest
special stages scheduled for the four days of the rally.
The Roger Albert Clark Rally is predominantly an historic rallying event; however, it does encompass a
number of support events, which are open to club competitors of all levels and budgets, more of which later.
Much has been written about the weather which descended on the 2010 event, making it the toughest event,
which the organising team have had to deal with. The fact that over the four days the rally reached its final
destination in Carlisle was nothing short of miraculous.
Additionally last year we had to disappoint many of our devoted fans by reluctantly asking them to stay away
from some of the special stages to ensure that there was safe passage for the competitors. To those
supporters we are eternally grateful and their help made the 2010 event the undoubted success it was.
So with this in mind, this year we are aiming to enhance the supporter experience in a number of ways,

s the 2010 event proved, the Roger Albert Clark Rally is truly a team effort with everyone
from the Rally Manager down pulling together to ensure that the event ran despite the
‘challenging’ weather conditions.
So what are the constituent parts of the ‘team’?
At the top is Rally Manager – Colin Heppenstall and the core organising team, each member of which is
responsible for a different facet of the event such as, logistics, safety, staffing, communications, route
and venues, event timing, results, public relations, administration etc.
Members of the core team then invite the next tier in the event organisation such as Area Coordinators,
Timekeepers, Scrutineers, Safety Car drivers, Service Co-ordinators, Doctors & Paramedics, Rescue &
Recovery Crews, Equipment Teams, Stage Commanders etc.
And so it goes on till we arrive at ground level, literally, where there is the vital ingredient on any rally,
the marshals.
How the marshals are organised and deployed is my responsibility as the events Communications and
Staffing Officer. Ably assisted by Joy Hewson, we have carried out this task from the first Roger Albert.
So how do we do this?
On the communications front, once I have the route details and the time schedule from Colin I start
constructing the event wide safety radio scheme, utilising the MSA Safety Communications frequency. The
purpose of this radio scheme is to monitor the safety of the event and to provide assistance for
competitors and others who find themselves in difficulties. The scheme incorporates selected points along
each special stage and also senior officials, medical personnel and the Rescue and Recovery crews
throughout the event.
To ensure that this system operates efficiently I have to ensure that the radio users on each group of
stages, whether in Yorkshire, Kielder or Scotland are controlled from a location that is capable of
communicating with the maximum number of radio points within that group of stages and that each
control is operated by suitably experienced controllers.
Next step is to establish how many MSA safety radio points are required per stage. Besides the start and
the finish locations I need to look at the points of risk on each stage and position the in-stage radios
accordingly making sure that the distance between each radio is not too long. This scheme is the prime
safety communication system on the event.
A
2.0 The Vital Ingredient – The Marshals
Page | 9
Roger Albert Clark Rally | Rally Guide 2011
As a support to the above MSA system there is a second layer of radio communication called Rallitrak,
brain child of Pete Baker. Rallitrak is a competitor monitoring system which also incorporates the
competitors. Each stage has a Rallitrak radio located at the start and finish plus additional radios at 5Km
intervals. The purpose of these Rallitrak points is to record and report the passage of every competitor
and to advise the MSA safety radio scheme of any missing competitors. In addition each competitor has a
handheld Rallitrak radio so that in the event they require assistance they can immediately put a request
into the MSA safety system, via Rallitrak, thereby alerting the safety system of an incident quickly. This
process drastically reduces response times where medical assistance is required.
Once the overall radio scheme is finalised Joy and I begin the process of recruiting volunteers not only to
populate the two radio schemes but also to provide the event wide general marshalling force.
Each stage has to be staffed to a level that provides the optimum safety cover i.e. there are sufficient
marshals to keep members of the public safe and to provide assistance to anyone in need. The number of
marshals required per stage varies dependent upon its length, number of junctions, number of risk points
and also number of spectator viewing areas. Stage Commanders are consulted during this process so that
they have an input with regard to how many marshals they would like are made fully aware of how many
marshals they are likely to expect on the day.
To help us compile the event marshals database we devised a pre-registration scheme. Completing a pre-
registration form gives volunteers the chance to choose the stages they wish to marshal on and provides
us with pre-knowledge of the marshalling numbers per stage, service area and passage controls.
Joy maintains the database which is updated on a regular, becoming a daily basis which she forwards to
me so that I can start to prepare the location information sheets.
This knowledge allows Joy and I to ensure that our aim, to ensure that the event benefits from being fully
marshalled, is achieved.
We begin this process early in the year and continue through almost up to the date of the event.
As the date of the event draws close the stage and other location information sheets are prepared. These
sheets, once complete, are emailed or posted to each marshal and marshals group contact and provide
information regarding event times, stage location details, stage staffing details and an ordnance survey
‘mapshot’ of the stage entry and start locations. Also prepared and distributed at this point are other
supporting documents such as radio check sheets, marshals information sheets etc.
When all the database work, emailing et al. has been done and the day of the event arrives then Joy and
I become the first Safety Car through the stages with the purpose of checking that the radio marshals
and the Rallitrak operators are in place. We also try to ‘shout’ a THANK YOU as we pass each marshalling
point in acknowledgement of the support given to the event.
Page | 10
Roger Albert Clark Rally | Rally Guide 2011
We have always endeavoured to place marshals on the stages they have requested and I can say that we
have managed to do this 99% of the time but we have to ensure that ALL the event locations have the
requisite number of marshals which may mean that some marshal movement may be necessary. The way
marshals can ensure that they get the stages they want is to register early.
The first RAC had in excess of 1200 marshals assisting during the event and this number has grown year
on year.
From the first year the RAC has benefited from a core of loyal and dedicated marshals who have,
deservedly, gained a reputation for being a knowledgeable and friendly group.
Every one who signs on to assist on the Roger Albert Clark Rally is a marshal and as such is a member of
a formidable team capable of performing miracles, in good humour, as the 2010 event proved.
Chrys Worboys – Chief Staffing and Communications Officer

Roger Albert Clark Rally | Rally Guide 2011
nce again the Roger Albert Clark Rally will follow the now-familiar format of the last few
years, with a start in Yorkshire before heading north to Northumbria and the Scottish Borders,
before a ceremonial finish in Carlisle City Centre four days later.
However, for 2011 the Roger Albert Clark Rally has a new start venue in Duncombe Park. Situated a few
miles down the road from its previous start at Pickering, the rally this year will use the dramatic backdrop
of one of Yorkshire’s foremost historic houses situated on the outskirts of Helmsley. The home of Lord
and Lady Feversham, the house sits within the picturesque North Yorkshire Moors National Park.
It will be the Headquarters for the Yorkshire leg of the rally, which will incorporate, scrutineering, pre
event documentation, central service park and a two and a half mile spectator stage all within the one
site. [See Section 3 for more information]
From the Friday night start, crews go straight into the Duncombe Park spectator stage, before tackling
a nine mile test in Dalby forest at night. These special stages will be repeated for a second time, before
weary crews return to Helmsley for an overnight halt.
On Saturday 3rd December, there is the addition of another classic forest special stage at Gale Rigg. This
together with the infamous fast sweeping bends of the Newton House stage in Langdale Forest and two
further attempts at the spectator stage at Duncombe Park will form the majority of the special stage
mileage in Yorkshire on Saturday 3rd December.
The rally then heads north calling in on the Croft Racing Circuit. Last used in 2006, this all tarmac stage
and service halt will lend an exciting element to the action this year. It replaces Oliver’s Mount as the key
spectator attraction for 2011.
Before crews reach the Northern Headquarters at Carlisle Racecourse on Saturday night for a well earned
rest, they will have to tackle two further special stages at Hamsterley and Shepherdshield.
Sunday 4th December will follow a familiar format, based around the central service park and spectator
stage at Dumfries, with special stages in Twiglees, Ae and Newcastleton.
It is the final day of the 2011 event, which is poised to be a real test of crews and cars as they will have
to compete over two long stages in Kershope forest, before making their way back to Carlisle for the
city centre ceremonial finish. Overall the route will offer competitors 170 competitive stage miles over 24
special stages
This year the Roger Albert Clark Rally is targeting a competing field of 100 competing cars. There is a
growing anticipation that for 2011 the Rally will build on its growing stature amongst its European
followers, by yet again increasing the number of continental crews taking part. Interest from overseas is
already ahead of that of 2010, when the event attracted 13 French and Belgian entries.

estling on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, Helmsley in North
Yorkshire will play host to the Yorkshire leg of the Roger Albert Clark Rally 2011.
Situated just a few miles down the road from the event’s previous start location at
Pickering, Helmsley with its many local visitor attractions is a peaceful backwater in North
Yorkshire. However down the years, the town has seen many rally cars pass through its pretty
market square, often having a time control located outside one of its many historic public houses.
It is because of this affinity with the sport and its location in terms of access to the forest complex
in Yorkshire that it was chosen for the start venue and rally headquarters.
The facilities afforded by the use of the grounds of Duncombe Park,
allow the organisers to once again have a centrally located
scrutineering, administration centre, service park and special stage
all within a compact location.
This gives the flexibility to have a major spectator stage situated
close to the service park, thus enhancing the spectator experience as
well as giving the competitors a challenging mixed surface test. Thus, the 2.5 mile special stage,
run in the dark on the Friday evening, will form the thrilling start to the 2011 event. 1
Helmsley itself has a long colourful history. It predates the Norman Conquest and was later
recorded in the Domesday Book as “Elmeslac”. Many of the buildings in and around the town date
from the 17th Century and were home to many weavers and tanners during that period, it is said
that they were fond of their revelry, the local market fair often being a drunken fist fight filled
affair.
Thankfully the locals are kinder and more welcoming these days and the town has much to offer.
On the next pages we have listed details of accommodation and other local amenities, which it is
felt, would be of use to the visitor to the town.

nce again the Roger Albert Clark Rally will be based in the Historic City of Carlisle for
the northern leg of the event. Once an important Roman frontier settlement, Carlisle has
been at the forefront of battles and skirmishes for many
centuries. So it is fitting that as usual the exciting climax of the Roger
Albert Clark Rally will take place in and around the Forests of the Border
Country. Battle will commence on Sunday morning and close on Monday
afternoon after crews have tackled the challenging Kershope stages.
As in the past, we will be enjoying the hospitality and excellent facilities offered by Carlisle
Racecourse. Rally headquarters will be situated within the main grandstand building.
Here all competitors will find the official event notice board, up to date results, the media and
marketing office and our newly instigated help desk, which has been designed to act as a central
point of contact for all event officials.
Spectators will have the opportunity to purchase a limited selection of rally memorabilia here
together with the rally programme.
The central service park, which will be located across the road from the grandstand, will
accommodate all competitors, with support, tyre suppliers and hot food outlets.
Only those vehicles with accredited access will be allowed into the service area. All other vehicles
must be parked in accordance with the marshals’ instructions, this includes all spectator traffic.
As in the past, this event offers competitors the
luxury of “open service”, allowing crews to work on
cars through the night if required. This has proved
very successful and is a spectacle not to be missed
if you are watching our event for the first time.
See the diagram opposite for details of available
facilities at the racecourse. Should you require any

he ceremonial finish to the 2011 Roger Albert Clark Rally will take place in the
pedestrian precinct outside the Old Town Hall in the centre of Carlisle. This is situated
close to the prestigious Lanes Shopping Centre, which is a bustling focus for retail therapy,
so why not combine your time with us by getting some of that Christmas shopping under your belt?
The mayor of Carlisle will be there together with
representatives of our event sponsors and senior
event officials to welcome home every competitor
who has finished this gruelling rally.
Watch the overall winners being presented with
their bubbly amongst the Christmas decorations in
the streets.
Each finisher has the right to pass through the
finishing arch to signify that they have completed
the 2011 Roger Albert Clark Rally. Once they have crossed the ceremonial finish line and received
their prizes, the winners will then re-group at Carlisle Racecourse, where the official Prizegiving will
take place. This usually takes place at about 5pm, after everyone has had time to clean up and
relax after four days of non-stop action. You are invited to join us there to congratulate the class
and overall winners of the Roger Albert Clark Rally.
