High technology and high latitudes.

Royal Huisman

Imagine cruising the global seas in a

luxury sailing yacht built to your exact

specifications white sails billowing in

the sun, teak decks gleaming, polished

wood panels in your private salon, and

master craftsmanship throughout.

For centuries the Dutch have had a

close relationship with the oceans of the

world, sailing to unknown lands.

Established in 1884 the Royal Huisman

Shipyard of Vollenhove, Holland designs

and builds some of the worlds most

luxurious sailing yachts. This innovative

yard blends computer aided design and

modern materials with time honored

craftsmanship to produce luxury yachts

for the most demanding clients.

Royal Huisman now offers Citect

software as the operator interface to

their monitoring and control system.

Anakena: designed for high latitudesThe 40m (132) Anakena, Huismans

first project from the prestigious

American Ted Hood Design Group, is a

heavy-displacement, shoal-draught

centerboard cruiser with high volume,

excellent stability and stately looks.

The Anakena embodies high

technology throughout her design.

A high aspect ketch rig incorporates

tapered Rondal masts and carbon-fiber

booms. An auxiliary trim board

balances her helm to reduce strain on

the rudder. Under power the 278-ton

hull is maneuvered by twin diesels,

variable-pitch props and an oversize

thruster. Out of respect for the pristine

environment in which she cruises, all

wastes including black and gray water

are properly treated. Food is chilled and

frozen using non-polluting refrigerants.

The interior Old World styling

features teak paneling with fluted

columns and ropework cornices.

The Huisman yard built full size

plywood mockups in an adjacent shed

to allow the owners to become fully

comfortable with the interior. After

approval of the drawings, bulkheads,

furniture and panels were built from

scratch, assembled for approval and

then installed in the yacht.

Anakena was delivered to her

owners in mid-summer 1996. In her

shakedown cruise out of Vollenhove

she sailed to the high latitudes of

Norway, then turned East to visit St.

Petersburg, Russia. After a minor

refitting, she braved autumn storm

winds of 60 knots in the English

Channel, settled into a tradewind

crossing from the Canaries to Antigua.

The crossing was so smooth that the

crew was able to serve fine meals and

wine as if anchored in a sheltered

harbor. After Anakena moored in Costa

Rica she prepared for further voyages

to the Galapagos, Easter Island,

Pitcairn Island, Tahiti and points west.

Because the Anakenas owners plan

to cruise in the cold, high latitudes

where great whales dive and icebergs

spawn, her design required a

strengthened hull able to withstand ice

and breaking seas. Designed for such

hostile conditions, she was built with

full systems redundancy and integral

monitoring of all important onboard

functions.

Impressed by its ability to assure

continuous operation, the Royal

Huisman yard chose highly reliable

Citect software to integrate the entire

monitoring and control system.

Monitoring & Control SystemOnboard a large, complex yacht such

as the Anakena the crew faces a mas-

sive flow of critical data, and needs

safe, automatic control of all mechani-

cal and electrical systems. To simplify

operations and replace vulnerable hard

wired circuits Royal Huisman have

employed Citect software together with

PLCs to monitor the boats perfor-

mance and safety as well as handling

many routine tasks.

The Citect system consists of five

PCs running Citect on a Novell

Network, 13 PLCs with over 1500 I/O

points in addition to navigation,

communications and audio-visual

systems. This SCADA system is

similar in scale to one found in a

typical small factory.

The system monitors variables from

sensors throughout the yacht and

presents information to the crew in a

format that is easy to understand even

when the deck is experiencing bad

weather. Citect stores 110+ historical

trends and monitors over 1400 alarms

to ensure that when a problem arises

the crew are instantly informed.

When cruising in desolate locations

for extended periods of time, total

system reliability is essential and

Citects redundancy capabilities have

been utilized to ensure that the system

remains operational.

Citect makes information available

anywhere onboard on computers

installed on the bridge, the engine

room, owners cabin, crew quarters, at

the helm, even from a laptop. Using the

onboard communications network, an

authorized Huisman service manager

can remotely modify the Citect

database or update a PLC program

using his office telephone and modem,

via SatCom.

Theres a surprising amount of wiring in the confined spaces of any yacht.

Improvements that reduce the amount of wiring needed also help lighten the

engineering and maintenance load.

Anakenas monitoring and control system.

The interior of the Anakena is finished throughout in the finest of woods and paneling to create

a living environment that is spacious, elegant and comfortable even during long passages across open sea.

The crew navigates the Anakenas monitoring and control system using the Citect main menu.

Engines: water temperature, oil pressure, RPMand run hours, and engine room temperature.

Generators: oil and water temperature, voltage, power and frequency.

Heating and Air Conditioning.

Electrical system: (3 phase power, with 2generators and interface to shore supply):voltage, kilowattage, Hz monitoring; batterybackup system voltage, capacity andtemperatures.

Lights: 20 running lights.

Fuel & Water Tanks: levels and alarms.

Refrigerators, Freezers & Coolers:temperatures and compressor valve status.

Bilge and Fire Alarms.

Hydraulic System: hoisting and furling sails.

Sail Handling.

1400+ Alarms: instant information on the causeof a problem.

Media Control Interface: nine video camerasprovide visual feedback for security when moored.

Dials indicate engine status in a familiar format.

Bar indicators show the level for each fuel and water tank and

have alarms for high and low levels.

Crew can locate all tanks from a single display.

Pop-up displays show level and alarms for each tank.

Using a single Citect Super Genie for each tank saved Huisman significant engineering time.

Crew can quickly locate faults in the steering system.

Monitoring of generator output, AC systems, DC systems,

and batteries can ensure uninterrupted power.

Freezers and refrigerators are individually monitored to prevent spoilage.

PLC performance can be modified over the Citect system,

as in this example for PLC20 controlling the freezers.

Navigation data such as course and distance are immediately visible in one place.
