What an exciting year we had in 2009! We welcomed in a new Mayor, watched downtown Montgomery’s new entertainment district come alive with the Harriott II Riverboat, Riverfront Pub Crawls, and many new bars and restaurants. Montgomery had its fi rst Montgomery Half Marathon, we added an entertainment route on the Montgomery Trolley and even have horse and carriage rides. I am so thankful for the new business relationships that have developed through working for RSVP

Montgomery, and so fortunate to work with my best friends. Boy, do they know how to bring out the sunshine on a rainy day! We are all looking forward to keeping our readers and supporters aware of the exciting things to do in our awesome City. Cheers to a new year!

Time is such an ambiguous thing. Looking back at the year, I cannot believe how fast time has fl own by, revelations made, or how much I have achieved and grown over this period.

I am enthusiastically looking forward to the New Year, with an exciting list of resolutions that, together with the support of my amazing family and friends I can make an even better me. I hope you fi nd the Calendar of Events helpful in planning your whereabouts. We never want to miss an opportunity to highlight any exciting events taking place, so if you have an event you would like to see published, send it my way. Here’s to a Happy New Year!

Starting a new year is always an exciting time but I cannot help but reminisce on this past year of many fi rsts for me! From getting engaged, becoming an aunt, graduating from college and entering the workforce into the best job I could ever ask for, this year has defi nitely been a year to remember. I am so blessed to be surrounded with my wonderful family and friends who support me in everything I do! Thank you so much to our readers and advertisers for your continued support of RSVP-Montgomery and we look forward to another great year!

It was exactly one year ago when a quick edit of life overruled looming hardship. New blessings and a traveling job meant I was both trading in my sorrows and trading up my Motorola for an i-Phone. The signifi cance: it cured my texting defi ciency.Adopting this form of communication meant adapting to the tricky, coded language. Many questionable translations later with my “calls-only” policy lifted, I still prefer audible laughter in conversation over LOL in texts!

I hope this publication provides readers a welcomed contrast to our world of rushed abbreviations. Promoting ways to enjoy the people and places around you, a must-read in this issue is “Game On” in our Connections feature. You may not laugh off any parts, but you will be entertained. TTYL!

As I think back on the many events and experiences of 2009, I have to say that the highlight of my year was my graduation and transition into the work force. I’m a big girl now! How lucky am I to have a full-time job doing something I love and actually using my degree? Through working with RSVP Montgomery, I have had the privilege of working with an amazing staff that have become some of my closest friends. Also, I have had the opportunity to see fi rst hand the extraordinary things happening in the River

Dillardʼs is my go-to spot for great accessories, and best of all they are always changing what they offer. Their brand “Natasha” has some great of-the-moment items that are absolute must haves! This fl ower and faux pearl necklace went on my wish list immediately. Its dramatic look gives you the ability to really catch attention as you walk in the door, and the three off-center organza fl owers give it a high fashion feel. Drape it over your neck and youʼll feel like you just walked off the runway. If cream isnʼt your color, itʼs offered in a beautiful soft gray as well.

Steve Madden is most famously known for his footwear, but his line has also come out with some great bohemian style accessories that we thought were perfect for toning down your look. Chicken Marsala 4 chicken breasts (boneless skinless)8 oz. sliced mushrooms (fresh)1/2 cup sweet Marsala wine (available at ABC store)1/2 cup low sodium chicken stock1 tablespoon unsalted butter1/4 cup chopped fresh fl at-leaf parsleyKosher salt & pepperOlive oil Season chicken with salt and pepper. In a large skillet, add olive oil and heat over med. heat. Add chicken and cook until almost completely cooked (about 15 minutes) Flipping once. Remove chicken and set aside. In same pan, add 2 tablespoons olive oil and add mushrooms, cook for 5 or 6 minutes (there should be no liquid in the bottom of the pan.) Add Marsala wine and cook for 2 minutes to cook off the alcohol. Add chicken stock and simmer for 3 minutes to reduce and allow sauce to thicken slightly. stir in butter. add chicken and make sure it is heated through. Taste, season with salt and pepper. Top with Chopped parsley just before serving.

Angel Hair Pasta1 gal water8 oz Angel Hair pasta3 tablespoons salt

Bring water to a boil, add salt and pasta, cook 7 minutes, drain, serve.

Mixed Veggie Sautee1 Onion1 Yellow Squash1 Zucchini1 Carrot1 lb Heri Covert (French Green Beans)2 tablespoons Olive oilKosher salt and pepper to taste

Thinly slice onion, cut squash, zucchini, and carrots into º inch rounds.

Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onion and carrots. Cook 5 minutes. Add zucchini, squash and heri coverts. Sautee for 4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Veggies should be cooked but still crunchy.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries4 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped4 tablespoons heavy cream10 large strawberries with long stems

Line a baking sheet with foil or waxed paper.

In the top of a double boiler set over hot water melt the chocolate, stirring. Add 3 tablespoons of the cream and stir until smooth. Holding each strawberry by the stem, dip into the chocolate mixture allowing the excess chocolate to drip back into the pan. If necessary, add additional cream to the chocolate to achieve desired coating con-sistency. Transfer the coated strawberry to the lined sheet and repeat process. Allow the chocolate to cool and then chill the strawber-ries until chocolate is set, about one hour.

Joe DiMaggio Jr. cares.

He cares about food like Michelangelo cared about painting. No coincidence, he cares about art also, a truth reflected by the fact that his restaurant, SaZa, hosts local artists each night who paint for the enjoyment of diners. A painter himself, he has a special appreciation for artists, and he is proud to provide them a showcase.

Joe cares about Montgomery. Talk to him for an hour, and one cannot help but see the great passion he has for our city. In fact, so fervent is his belief in Montgomery that Joe has moved the global corporate offices of SaZa here. He is energized not just by what Montgomery is, but what it is becoming.

“I didn’t know anything about Montgomery before I came here,” he notes. “I only had a stereotyped idea of what it was. But my perception now is so much different. This is such a great city, such a great state, with so much potential.”

Joe has created and designed restaurants all across the globe. He has designed 540 restaurants, casinos and hotels worldwide in locales from London, England, Hong Kong to Osaka, Japan. His hectic schedule has seen him travel throughout the U.S. as well, and it was this travel that spurred him to create SaZa.

“I have been almost everywhere you can go in this country. And as I was travelling, I would arrive in places where there was nothing like what we’re doing. People travel so much more now. A guy visiting Montana, where does he go to get a great bowl of pasta? Or a real, authentic slice of pizza in Idaho?”

This idea found a seed here in Montgomery when Joe was introduced to local businessman Ken Register. Ken visited Naples, Florida, to see one of Joe’s restaurants in action. There he found not only the superlative cuisine Joe is famous for, but a line of eager patrons waiting over an hour to get a taste. Along with their financial partners, Robert and Myndee Hassel, who own the Montgomery location, they decided to bring SaZa to the River Region.

The life’s journey that ultimately led Joe to our fair city is as extraordinary as any you’ll ever hear. His choice of vocation began in his formative years. He experienced a kind of dual citizenship growing up, spending six months a year in New York and six months in Italy. While abroad, he gained his first exposure to the restaurant business. Joe vividly recalls being nine years old and watching the chef for the Hotel Biaggi. The chef tidied himself up, walked out the front door, and got into a brand new Ferrari.

“From that point, I knew what I wanted to do for a living,” he says, laughing.

Joe’s story since then has been a fairy tale, although one created by a singular talent, an unerring desire, and years of hard work. As a young man, Joe quickly gained a reputation for his brilliant, innovative food creations. His mastery of cuisine garnered attention not only from his culinary peers, but from the bright lights of show business as well. He cooked for Al Pacino during the shooting of the seminal 80s gangster film, Scarface. He has cooked for A-list celebrities, stars and dignitaries all over the world including U2, Al Pacino, and Frank Sinatra, all whom he calls friends. While he has appeared on 110 television shows and worked as chef on 10 major motion pictures, it is the friendships developed with these unique personalities that he remembers most.

While these accomplishments are flattering, Joe doesn’t consider them much more than the enjoyable perks of his success. His real joy comes from watching the reactions of people visiting his restaurant for the first time. With SaZa, he is presenting his patrons a menu which reflects his own humble beginnings—the peasant Italian cuisine he grew up with. 80% of the menu is comprised of the dishes his grandmothers once served. They reflect the beautiful simplicity of those meals from his youth.

unseen since the Great Depression, Joe saw an even greater necessity for a restaurant like SaZa. His menu choices are reasonably priced, and he takes pleasure in providing great food that is affordable to everyone.

“I love the eclectic crowds that we draw,” he says proudly. “We get people from all walks of life.”

Joe’s touch can be seen in all facets of the restaurant. Aware that his Italian heritage carries with it the dangerous glamour of Mafia stereotypes, he placed a sign inside SaZa listing the ‘owners’ of the restaurant: himself and a litany of shadowy Mob-type figures with names like Frankie Bumps, Crazy Tony Blue Eye, and Butchie Costello. Should a customer ask about one of these ‘owners,’ the staff is trained to respond: “are you FBI?”

As for the staff, they are all graduates of an intensive three week training program led by expert personnel flown in from Joe’s other restaurants worldwide.

“I had heard that restaurant staffing was a nightmare. But I really think it’s a lack of the proper training. I couldn’t be happier with the crew I have.”

The ‘mood music’ playing on the stereo at SaZa reflects the diverse tastes of its owner. As a Chef, Joe is proficient in the cuisines of 28 different countries. The SaZa soundtrack reflects this global influence, with exotic sounds from Moroccan, Spanish, Latin, and Italian artists.

This idea of introducing the River Region to something new and exciting is why Joe came here. The enthusiastic response he has already received has given Joe the confidence to make our capital city the base for SaZa’s corporate operations, and his expansion plans for SaZa are as ambitious as the man himself.

“I want to bring SaZa throughout the South—Birmingham, Huntsville, Nashville…I want to introduce our special dishes to people all across this great region.”

This is what drives Joe now: the honest desire to give people everywhere a restaurant experience they’ve never had. If one should question his commitment to the cause of a great meal, one need only listen to him describe the near-rage he feels when he eats a lousy one.

“Most restaurants don’t respect their ingredients. They mask their food with heavy sauces because they don’t care about what they’re serving. People’s palettes are more sophisticated these days, and they should demand accountability from the restaurants they eat at.”

For Joe, this demand for accountability has occasionally caused him to become so angry while eating out that only prudence and self-control prevented a public incident.

“When I was younger, I would get so mad when I was served a bad meal somewhere that it was everything I could do not to go into the kitchen and punch the chef!”

Outside of his life’s calling, Joe is equally committed to giving back to those less fortunate. His charitable work extends across the globe, from a school he built in his wife’s name for children in Mali, Africa, to his crucial work as a member of the star studded Board of Governors for We Are Family Foundation, started by music legend Nile Rodgers and Nancy Hunt.

For Joe DiMaggio Jr., success is an ever-evolving concept. With age, his sense of what comprises success has become refined, turning outward, away from himself. His new goals are both ambitious and commendable, and Montgomery is a big part of them.

BRAD SHARPLESS

A famous businessman once remarked that “clutter is the enemy of an ordered mind.” If so, then business has a true ally in Brad Sharpless, co-owner of NoMess Commercial Cleaning Service. With his partner Philip Mitchell, he has built a successful business by providing an ordered, mess-free environment for his clients. With a degree in Business from Auburn University , Brad is unafraid to get his hands dirty in the line of duty. “We take pride in everything from stripping a floor to cleaning a restroom. This is how we leave our signature in a commercial facility.” Brad has also created his signature in the River Region by getting involved locally in the downtown revitalization. “Creating relationships with the City of Montgomery and local business owners downtown, we are proud to do our part maintaining a clean environment in the new Alley Way development.” At home, Brad and his wife Margo are the proud parents of Marley (2 years old), and have a new baby boy coming in February! He and his family attend First Baptist Church , and in his down time, Brad is an avid outdoorsman. “I love to explore the outdoors through hunting and fishing.”

SUSANNAH JONES CLEVELAND

Shaping the futures of bright young minds is the noble profession of Susannah Cleveland, Director of Admissions and Marketing at The Montgomery Academy. Susannah’s own academic path to her current vocation was an impressive one as well. First achieving her Bachelor’s from Auburn University in Political Science/History and Communications, she went on to achieve both a Masters in Education in Secondary Social Science Education from Auburn, then an Education Specialist Degree from AUM in Secondary Science Education. Since then, Susannah has garnered the top honor of being named to the National Board of Professional Teachers. After teaching for eleven years in Autauga County, she assumed her current position at the Academy. Now in her sixth year with that esteemed school, she finds much that inspires her. “I truly enjoy being able to tell families about the wonderful program we have at The Montgomery Academy and to explain to them what we call ‘The MA Difference.’” Outside of her work with the school, she finds time to be actively involved in several organizations: EMERGE Leadership Council, EMERGE Torchbearers Leadership Graduate Class 1, the Junior League, the Clef Works Advisory, the United Way, the Vintage Affair, the Auburn University Alumni Association, and the Montgomery County Auburn Club. At home, she is mother to Ford Cleveland, a ten years old attendee of The Montgomery Academy in the 5th grade. Asked to name her favorite things about the River Region, Susannah is effusive in her praise. “I love the family atmosphere. It is a great place to raise children, and I am especially excited about all the new entertainment venues that are coming to the city. The changes that are in store for Montgomery’s future are sure to persuade more young people to locate to our great city.”

MAURICE ROLLINS

With the future of health care ever-evolving on the national stage, Maurice Rollins, Healthcare Quality Manager for Alabama Primary Healthcare Association, makes it his job to provide the best possible care at the 120+community health centers in Alabama. It was this same earnest desire to help improve the lives of his fellow Alabamians that encouraged him to run for office next year, as he seeks to be the Democrat representative for District 76. An honors graduate from Kemper Military College in Missouri, he is also a graduate in Business from Troy University, and is currently pursuing his MBA from Troy as well. In his current vocation, Maurice is responsible for improving financial, operational, and clinical policies at these health centers. In his previous employment, he supervised engineering projects for corporate giants such as Boeing, Pratt Whitney, Dowdy, and Procter & Gamble, and his valuable counsel resulted in millions of dollars in cost savings around the world. Such huge responsibility requires a sharp analytical mind and a commitment to hard work. Asked where he learned such vaunted tools, Maurice is quick to credit others. “My mother and father has the biggest impact on my success, I have watched them demonstrate hard working values and helping others who are in need.” Outside of work, Maurice has been a committed community activist. He has served as President of his neighborhood Homeowners’ Association, Youth Leader at New Home Baptist Church, and as a Partner in Education Mentor. He is also a member of the Montgomery Sunrise Rotary Club, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the New Home Baptist Male Chorus, and was nominated for Volunteer of the Year award in 2009. “I feel government can be used as a vessel to improve healthcare in Alabama, in addition to improving youth advocacy, and reversing the economic downturn in our state.” Maurice enjoys a happy home with beautiful wife Georgia and step-son Herbert.

MARQUES FORBES

Working out the stresses of modern life from his clients’ bodies is the good work of Marques Forbes, Licensed Massage Therapist at Olivia A Salon. Receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Auburn University of Montgomery, Marques is additionally licensed in Massage Therapy from the Montgomery School of Bodywork & Massage, and is currently applying for continuing education in Physical Therapy. Why did he get into this particular body of work? “The support from my family and friends have influenced and motivated me to embody everything relating to health, fitness, and therapy. Embodying the tools I need to become a well rounded therapist is an ultimate goal of mine.” Marques finds rewards in every part of his job, but the part he loves most is seeing the end results his clients receive. “Clients seek treatment from me with all different types of ailments, from stress to common back pain. My goal is to increase the overall health and well being of the recipient, through the skills I have acquired from my studies at AUM and massage therapy school.” He not only specializes in Orthopedic and Sports Massage, but also in SPA/Therapeutic Massage, which includes such exotic treatments as hot stones, aromatherapy, and salt glows. The son of a Naval officer, Marques traveled the globe. “I am a descendent of the Republic of Panama, so I have had the experience of living in a country where English is not the native tongue.” Yet today, Marques is a proud resident of Montgomery. “My favorite thing about Montgomery is not only watching it grow, but being able to assist that growth myself. I want to bring as many innovative ways of treatment to Montgomery as I can!” And ladies, Marques is one the Montgomery’s finest eligible bachelors!


GLENN CRUMPTON

For Glenn Crumpton, President of Alabama Artificial Limb & Orthopedic Service, Inc. (AAL&OS), taking care of those less fortunate was a passion from a young age. “My grandfather, Alfred Latimer, was an orthotist who founded Orthopedic Service Company in 1950. My mother, Barbara Crumpton, is a prosthetist who has been an integral part of Alabama Artificial Limb Company since 1963, the year I was born ‘so I guess you could say I was born with this career in my blood.” With an Associates degree in Business Administration from Troy University and Post Graduate Certification in Prosthetics and Orthotics from prestigious Northwestern University, Glenn found additional tutelage from his uncle, Glenn Latimer. “He gave me the opportunities and experience to develop the skills necessary to help people overcome physical challenges such as amputations, strokes, trauma and congenital disorders.” Orthopedic Service Company and Alabama Artificial Limb Company merged in 2004 to form Alabama Artificial Limb & Orthopedic Service, Inc. Today, Glenn relishes the many challenges his work affords. “The most satisfying aspect of my career is getting the chance to work with other members of the rehabilitation team to restore an individual’s lifestyle to the highest level possible after suffering a significant physical challenge. Our company’s slogan is ‘redefine the possible’.” Growing up in Montgomery has additionally allowed Glenn to immerse himself in the community. “I’ve particularly enjoyed being involved in the Montgomery arts community ‘especially the Montgomery Civic Ballet and Alabama Dance Theatre.” Glenn also teaches physical therapy as an adjunct instructor at the thriving Alabama State University Physical Therapy School and is a board member with the Montgomery Clean City Commission and the Montgomery Community Action Board. At home, he has a wonderful blended family with wife Jennifer and daughters Sara, Jordan, and Emilee.

MELISSA KATHRYN DEAN

Making better the lives of those in need is the life’s work of Melissa Dean, Social Worker II with the Alabama Department of Public Health. A licensed Social Worker with the state of Alabama, Melissa has with many different programs such as Maternity recipients, the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program and the Asthma Pilot Program for Montgomery County. “I have a passion for helping others in need, and I truly believe we are all the same on the inside no matter our race, gender or age. When you have helped someone and a year later you see them, and they say ‘you have helped me change my life, and I couldn’t have done it without you,’ then you are truly blessed in your profession.” Graduating from Troy State University with a Bachelor’s degree in social work, Melissa is furthering her education, having recently been accepted to the Advanced Standing Distance Learning Masters in social work Program with the University of Alabama. Crediting her parents with inspiring her, she has traveled the world as a Delegation Leader with the People to People Student Ambassador Program. “I have traveled to 9 different countries in Europe in addition to Japan, China and Australia. I love meeting people from different cultures and learning about their way of life.” Yet as much as she enjoys traveling, Melissa is quick to add: “it is always great to get back to Montgomery, to my family, friends and 2 dogs, Lexie and Bailey!” Outside of work, Melissa serves on the Multi Disciplinary Team with Helping Montgomery Families Initiative, the Emerge Program Committee, the Alabama Asthma Coalition, and is the Social Chair for the Montgomery Young Republicans.


STEVE GOLDSBY

For Steve Goldbsy, CEO of Integrated Computer Solutions, Inc. (ICS), success means more than simply enjoying the fruits of his company’s growth. It has served as a springboard for vital community involvement. “Both Randy George, President of the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce, and John Veres, Chancellor of AUM, impressed upon me the importance of looking outward,” he said. “Today, I’m participating in our community in many ways and loving every minute of it.” In addition to serving on the board of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, Steve is the President of the Montgomery Area Center for Economic Development, and he founded the Alabama Technology Foundation. But if not for the influence of an Air Force supervisor, Goldsby believes his story could have turned out quite differently. “I grew up the son of a single mother in the projects of Pennsylvania,” he said. “I was in the Air Force, and in the beginning, I was always getting in trouble, mostly because I was frustrated with obstacles to getting my job done. I had a supervisor named Johnny Dixon who had the patience and grace to give me the discipline I needed.” After earning his Mathematics degree from Troy University, Goldsby started ICS. “Our clients ask us to solve their difficult technology and security problems, which is always rewarding, but the best part is that they actually pay us to hack into their computer networks and help them secure their infrastructure.” His company spreads the love around, too, donating over $130,000 of computer equipment to Montgomery Public Schools and AUM. This self-described “former problem child” is now providing a positive example for his daughter, 10th grader Ariana, as well as for his fellow capital city residents.

STEFANIE HICKS

Bringing the news into our living rooms every night is the special work of Stefanie Hicks, co-anchor of the CBS 8 News at 6 and 10 p.m. on WAKA. A graduate of the Hall School of Journalism with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and Public Relations from Troy University, Stefanie got into television while still in college, anchoring newscasts on TSU-TV (now TrojanVision). Before coming to WAKA, she was the morning news anchor at WTVY-TV in Dothan. Today, she finds much joy and inspiration in her work at WAKA. “One of the best parts of my job has been all of the amazing opportunities it has awarded me. I have been fortunate enough to travel to Korea with Hyundai, where I did stories at the single largest automotive plant in the world. I also flew to New York to interview Katie Couric when she took over as anchor of the CBS Evening News. She has been a hero of mine since I got into this business.” Yet Stefanie counts her highest reward in her interactions with people here in the River Region. “My absolute favorite part of the job is meeting so many different people from all walks of life, from everyday Alabamians working hard to take care of their families to the top political leaders in the state.” Stefanie works hard outside of work as well, helping raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by co-hosting the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon each Labor Day on CBS 8. She is additionally involved with the Mentoring Matters program at Seth Johnson Elementary School, and is an annual speaker at the state Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership seminar. She is married to Jeff Sanders, anchor of CBS 8 News at Noon and 5 p.m., and they have two “children”, a border collie named Mac and a Wheaten Terrier named Rupert.

LOOK:“Mystery Science Theater 3000”Comedy Series, Available on DVD

Have you ever watched a movie so awful that you gained more

enjoyment making fun of it than from the movie itself? If so, this

venerable show from the 90s is for you. The “plot” of the show—

a man is held captive in space by a mad scientist and forced to

watch the worst films ever made—is really beside the point. The

laughs come from the snarky, rapid-fire jokes that come at the

expense of the shockingly awful flicks being screened. The show

ran 10 glorious seasons (first on Comedy Central, then on Sci-

fi Network), so there is much to enjoy, however I particularly

recommend Season 6 as the perfect jumping off point for an off-

beat comedy series for the ages.

Take 50 Cent’s “In Da Club,” give it a superhuman dose of psychedelic electronics, and you have

this interstellar track featuring one of 2009’s newfound underground rap heroes, Lupe Fiasco.

Built on a foundation of slow, car-shaking beats and accented by keys that both stutter and soar,

this was the hands-down best hip-hop song of last year and an absolutely essential download

for fans of the genre.

“Answer to Yourself” by The Soft PackSpecial props go to my West Coast-based little brother, Jody, for turning me on to the above-

mentioned hip-hop track and this outstanding indie-punk song from the UK. Sounding a lot

like a grittier Green Day, “Answer to Yourself” is an insidiously catchy pop track hidden artfully

beneath fuzzy modern rock guitars. Go get it, and then send my brother a thank you e-card

(see SURF below for your e-card needs).

RSVP: Tell us about how the band came together.Michael: I started the band around 10 years ago. We started out as The Coconut Cowboys before we changed our name to Suns of March. We still play shows under both names. Our current line-up consists of me on lead vocals and guitars; Kurt Butler on background vocals, lead guitars, mandolin, and harmonica; Ryan Aldridge on background vocals and bass; and Berry Matthews on the drums. Kurt, Ryan, and Berry had all been playing extensively in the southeastern region. Over time, I was able to convince them to work with me, and it’s been the most successful team I’ve ever had the opportunity to be a part of. We have all become great friends, and I have the utmost respect for all of them as people and musicians.

RSVP: Tell us about your own personal journey to becoming a musician.Michael: My first interest in becoming a musician developed when I was around 13 years old. I was listening to bands like Dokken, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, and Megadeth at the time, and I wanted to be a gunslinger on the guitar. I took lessons from Lance Lisenby (Wired, The Rat Race, Mr. Whoopee, Filthy Wilma) at a local store called Music Matters owned by a great guy named Mike Moody. Lance is one of the greatest guitar players I have ever met. I used to go there every day and drive the staff crazy playing power chords on the new electrics they would get in. Mike would tell me stories about the history of the local music scene in Montgomery. Montgomery has always had a vast pool of musical talent.

RSVP: How long have you been in bands?Michael: By the time I was in high school, I started working on singing and song writing. I remember one of the first bands I was in was called Calico Road with John Darnell, Derrick Frost, and Don Clayton. We practiced at Derrick’s house in his game room and all our friends would come over and listen. We never played one show but that was as much fun as I’ve ever had playing music.

RSVP: And you must have had college bands as well.Michael: Yeah. I started college at AUM, became a Christian, joined a local church and started a Christian band. We would go around playing our originals and worship songs for various churches around the Southeast. Our first name was Creed (yes, Scott Stapp stole the name from us). Eventually, I starting working at that church as an intern and became the Student Worship Leader. Working there was one of the greatest privileges and most rewarding experiences I have ever had, and I still keep up with many of my friends and family from that church.

RSVP: When did you fi rst start performing live?Michael: My first public performance in Montgomery was at the old Books a Million. They said I could come and play for tips in their coffee shop. After a couple of weeks, a manager from O’Charleys heard me and wanted to pay me $100 to come play there on Friday nights. That feeling of having my first paid venue gig was every bit as big as playing in front of ten thousand people, which I’ve done many times. When I met Phil Achee, we started a band with Rick Letner called Plow that later became Slow Rollin’ Cow. With them, I recorded my first album in Austin, TX. We had a producer, and it was a fun introduction to the recording process.

RSVP: How did you arrive at your current band?Michael: When I met Martin Brasfield with The Music Garden, that was the beginning of it. Martin was instrumental in the success of The Coconut Cowboys / Suns of March. I have learned more from him about the music industry and business in general than any other source of influence I can recall in my life. The very first version of The Coconut Cowboys was Chuck Mann, David Bedsole, Mark George, and my cousin Rocky Wright. I have had the privilege of playing with many great musicians since that first line-up to now.

Suns of March are no stranger to success. The band was a semi-finalist in The Independent Music World Series, and their cd, “Bulletproof Heart,” was a top finisher. With the album’s first single, “San Jose,” the band has enjoyed sales and reviews in over 65 countries since its release. With their unique blend of rock and country, the band recently signed a distribution deal in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands with venerable indie label Touchtunes. Through this fortuitous partnership, Suns of March is currently infiltrating 67 countries, and are poised to break out their sound to a whole new audience. RSVP sat down with the band’s leader and creative force, Michael Wright, to talk about the history of the band and their newfound good fortune:

RSVP:Who do consider your primary infl uences for the Suns of March sound?Michael: I have many influences but if I had to name three, they would be: Derek Welsh, Eddie Wohlford, Billy Eli, and Jeff Tomei.

RSVP: What current artists do you listen to? Michael: My newest fav is Blackberry Smoke. I also like Ryan Adams, MGMT, and Alter Bridge.

RSVP: What’s on your ipod right now?Michael: “Wild Hearted Son” by The Cult.

RSVP: Tell us about the making of your CDMichael: Bulletproof Heart was recorded at Atmosphere Studios (Montgomery, AL) by Dave Campbell, mixed at Cock of the Walk Studios (Kennesaw, GA), and mastered at The Masterhouse (Atlanta, GA) by Rodney Mills. I wrote all the songs together as one compilation. The band at that time consisted of Clay Lord, Zebulon Bowles, and Steve Stewart. Each added great input. Eddie Wohlford and Chason Dreamz also made key contributions. All in all, the album is one of my favorite CD’s of all time and I am grateful to all who helped to create the album.

RSVP: What new recordings do you have in the works?Michael: I have a couple hundred songs that I’m constantly working on. I have started releasing my music on my personal Facebook page at no charge. I plan on releasing any new acoustic or full-band recordings there and will also place them on iTunes.

RSVP:You just signed a deal with Touchstones. How did that come about?Michael: Touchtunes reached out to me, and I was glad to be a part of their business. It’s a well thought out and profitable idea. iTunes is our largest revenue generator. Club BTS (Behind the Scenes) is writing their own script on live entertainment welcoming today’s hottest live bands, Wednesday Karaoke Parties, 99 cent College Thursdays, Pay-Per-View Sporting Events, periodic stunt shows and guest celebrity appearances.

Hollywood Stuntman and owner Hiro Koda has a long list of movie credits to his name! Born and raised in Alabama, Koda came into the television and film industry at the young age of 12. By 17, he was using his martial arts background to break into the stunt world.

Koda invites you behind the scenes of some of the films and television shows he has worked on. In the flavor of “Planet Hollywood” and “Hard Rock Cafe” – Club BTS is a museum of sorts… Come in for some great food, cocktails and friendly service, as you check out the collection of movie memorabilia, autographed pictures of celebrities he has worked with, and action reels from Hollywood’s hottest stunt performers. It is a unique look into the film industry highlighting the action in films and the people who put their lives on the line to create the exciting stunt sequences we see on the silver screen.

Enjoy live music on stage every weekend beginning with Thursday Night Acoustic Rock. And come watch your favorite sports and pay-per-view events on one of 12 TVs or on the two hundred inch TV screen, the biggest TV in the River Region.

Open Monday through Saturday 4 P.M. until 2 A.M. Must be 21 to enter.
