PURPOSE OF SMOKE CONTROL

In a fire situation, smoke and heat exhaust ventilation systems create and maintain a smoke free layer above the floor by remo-ving smoke, to

− assist people in evacuation, and − facilitate access for firefighting.

NSHEVS consists five main components:1. NSHEV2. Air inlet3. Smoke barrier4. Power supply5. Control panel

HARMONISED EN STANDARDS

Performances for NSHEV in normal situati-on, when no fire, are under scopes:

− EN 14351-1 wall mounted − EN 1873 individual rooflights of plastics − prEN 1873-2 individual rooflights of glass − prEN 1873-3 roof hatches, and − EN 14963 Continuous rooflights of plas-tics.

Performances in fire situation for NSHEV are under scope of EN 12101-2. Require-ment levels for all smoke control products in Finland are in NAS standards (SFS 7000 serie).

SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE OF NSHEV

According national regulation owner of the building has responsibility to arrange ser-vice for all fire safety systems installed. In Finland this is covered by Rescue Act.

Eurolux S02 guideline Maintenance of Na-tural Smoke and Heat Exhaust Ventilation Systems (NSHEVS) sets responsibilities of each stakeholder and detailed maintenan-ce operations instructions.

It is recommended that the building has a named person in charge of maintenance, and to organize contract with specialized service company. The person in charge should maintain the log book.

Annual service and maintenance should be done by a specialized experts who are trained for these actions.

All Keravent power supplies of NSHEVS are equipped with service timer, which re-minds of service needs in case maintenan-ce is not done in time.

SMOKE EXHAUST SYSTEM IN A BUILDING

The scheme of a building above shows how two decentralized control panels and a cent-ralized button control the smoke exhaust system. This solution offers optimized cable costs.

Design, installation and maintenance of smoke exhaust systems

RIL 232-2012, Design, installation and main-tenance of smoke exhaust systems, comple-ments the European standard EN 12101 and provides guidelines for functional recom-mendations and calculation methods for smoke exhaust ventilation systems. Details

of recommendations and calculation met-hods for smoke and heat exhaust ventilati-on systems can be found in CEN/TR 12101-5 Smoke and Heat Control Systems. Ministry of the Environment Decree on fire safety of buildings - guidline part can be used for the design of smoke exhaust ventilation systems for staircases, basements, production buil-dings and garages. Another simple method is using a design scheme where the buil-ding is divided into four categories based on smoke production in the area. In areas, where personal safety is of high importan-ce, calculations are based on steady state or developing fire simulations, and these fire simulations are carried out by a qualified en-

gineer. According to RIL 232, the installation and maintenance of smoke exhaust systems must be carried out by personnel trained and skilled for the expertise. Fire safety and personal safety can be guaranteed, when installation, testing and regular maintenance is carried out by trained personnel.

Installation and maintenance

The supplier of the smoke exhaust system tests the system and signs the installation re-port along with other handover documenta-tion, when installation carried out by system supplier. The installation report is to be pre-sented to the building inspection authority and/or rescue authority if so required.

Means shall be designed and con-structed in a building for adequate smo-ke extraction suitable for the different premises of the building.

Means shall be provided for the extrac-tion of smoke from, and for the flow of replacement air to fire-separated exits and fire-separated lift shaft.

Means shall be provided for smoke extraction from the spaces of the ba-sement storey, so that it will not be necessary to use fireseparated exits or fire-separated extinguishing routes for smoke extraction.

In buildings of classes P2 and P3 with two storeys means for smoke extracti-on from the second floor exit shall be arranged through a window or hatch with an area of at least 0,5 m² and which is simple to open or break. In buildings of not more than 8 storeys means for smoke extraction from the upper part of the exits shall be arranged through a window or hatch with an area of at least 1,0 m². When designing smoke ex-traction from the exits in buildings with more than 8 storeys it must be ensured that smoke and combustion gases will not endanger the evacuation from the premises connected with the exits. The arrangements concerning smoke ex-traction shall be negotiated with the local construction authorities.

CONTROL SYSTEMS

Control panels 24 VDC, 48 VDC and 230 VACControl panels have a built-in battery back-up unless the building’s power systems (230 VAC) have generators as a secondary power supply. The control system must have a battery back-up for 72 hours in case of incidents such as a power failure.

The standard EN 12101-10 (Power Supply Equipment PSE) is applied to primary and secondary power supplies, and they requi-re a CE marking.

Power supply devices are divided into two categories

− class A devices are suitable for use with all systems

− class B devices are suitable for use with systems that are fail-safe.

The power supply equipment for natural smoke and heat exhaust ventilation sys-tems belongs to category A as it is not fail-safe.

Smoke control systems that are not fail-sa-fe must have at least two power supplies: primary and secondary power supply. The primary power supply must be designed to use the power grid or similar. The seconda-ry power supply, such as battery or gene-rator, must be functional at all times and it must be tested and maintained regularly.

Each power source, on its own, shall be capable of operating those parts of thes-moke and heat control system for which it is intended.

If the primary power source fails, then the PSE shall be automatically switched over to a secondary power source. When the primary power source is restored, the PSE shall be automatically switched back.

The capacity of the power supply depends on the total current load of hatches. Hat-ches are opened in groups as smoke reser-voirs. Each room is a single reservoir. Large rooms are divided by smoke barriers into smaller reservoirs so that the area of one smoke reservoir does not exceed 2,000 m². In larger buildings control panels that operate as power supplies should be de-centralised to ensure a reasonable cable thickness. Smoke vent buttons are usually located at the main entrance and/or near the fire control panel, where the scheme of the smoke exhaust system is also located.
